BharOS is an Android open source project (AOSP)-based operating system funded by the Indian government and developed by an IIT Madras-incubated firm.

Additionally, it is unclear how users may switch from their existing operating system to BharOS or whether developers would work with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to introduce smartphones that support the locally-developed mobile operating system. This is ensured through No Default Apps (NDA). The BharOS was developed by JandK Operations Private Limited (JandKops), which has been incubated at IIT Madras.

India-made BharOS to take on Android, iOS (Times of India)

NEW DELHI: An Indian company with mentorship from IIT-Madras has come out with an indigenous mobile operating system — BharOS (short for Bharat OS) — that is poised to take on Google Android and Apple iOS with a more secure system.

BharOS services are currently being provided to organisations that have stringent privacy and security requirements. Users are not forced to use apps that they may not be familiar with or that they may not trust. BharOS was developed by JandK Operations (JandKops), which hasa 30-member team and has been incubated at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras.

There is also a possibility that it will allow users to sideload apps in a much easier manner than Android allows. Another advantage is that Android has a very wide user base so bugs and issues are quickly reported and resolved. Furthermore, it will have its own app store which will allow users to download and install apps, eliminating the need for the Google App Store. We don’t know what sort of devices will BharOS support. So in all likelihood, BharOS will be limited to new and upcoming devices, and perhaps not be launched officially for older devices. BharOS sure has its benefits especially when we speak of security and privacy. The developers of BharOS have not provided any information on its release date or supported smartphones. To that effect, IIT-Madras recently announced, that one of the startups from its incubators, has developed a new home-grown operating system called BharOS or Bharat OS. Removing an operating system and installing a fresh one on mobile handsets is a seriously risky business, something that even the most seasoned tech enthusiasts think twice before attempting. Instead, it will let users choose what apps they want to use for their own devices. Because BharOS uses AOSP or Android Open Source Project, the functionalities and the methodologies both OS use are essentially the same. Because all smartphones either run on Android or on iOS, there has always been a pervasive uneasiness about how these companies collect, store and use the data that is generated by Indian smartphone users.
