Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh movie review: This revisionist take on ... (The Indian Express)

Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh movie review: Rajkumar Santoshi's attempt at revisionism is marred by trying to play it both ways, and falling between the planks.

One of the film’s ideas is to debunk the kind of myths which have been gaining currency on WhatsApp groups, that he agreed to hand over precious crores to Pakistan. Mandlekar is made to constantly rail and flare his nostrils, turning him into a uni-dimensional hot-head who keeps justifying the murder of one of the greatest pacifists the world has known, by denouncing him as the man who didn’t hold the interests of the Hindu community above all, and who forced a love of Muslims down reluctant throats. Would there have been a dilution of ideology, or change of heart on the part of Nathuram Godse, one of the most reviled names in modern history?

But the film suffers from a seriously flawed dramatic diversion in the form of a love story that is knitted into the hypothetical face-off between the Mahatma and his assailant. Antani’s Gandhi is also open to a giggle and chuckle. When a woman introduces herself as Nirmala, Gandhi giggles, “My goat is also named Nirmala. Both the actors in their eponymous parts furnish an impressive gravitas to their characters.Deepak Antani is especially outstanding as Mahatma Gandhi . He plays the Mahatma as a humane, vulnerable, well-meaning but often prone to excessive obstinacy. The romantic subplot featuring newcomers Tanisha Santoshi and Anuj Saini as seriously committed childhood sweethearts torn apart by the obstinacy of the Mahatma, puts a brake on what could have been a powerful debate on Gandhian and non-Gandhian versions of socio-political protest. As a fan of Santoshi’s work Ghayal, Ghatak, Damini and especially Lajja, I held my breath for his resurrection in Gandhi Godse: Ek Yudh, Santoshi’s first film in ten years, and most definitely not among his best, but nonetheless a valuable political parable. It is an audaciously fascinating what-if premise: suppose Gandhi had survived Godse’s bullet? These are some of the vexatious questions that

Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh Review: The ideological war in imagined ... (India Today)

Rajkumar Santoshi makes his directorial comeback after a decade with Gandhi Godse - Ek Yudh. But is the film about an ideological war between Gandhiji and ...

However, it is the script that’s a let-down. However, the biggest issue that comes from a treatment like this is that the plot is oversimplified, and the movie turns rather preachy and bland. To make a movie with such a sensitive subject required the experience that Santoshi had. But is the film about an ideological war between Gandhiji and Godse in an alternate reality really worth a watch? Exactly four days before the same day, in 2023, releases the film Gandhi Godse - Ek Yudh, which reimagines a reality where Godse fails to assassinate Mahatma, and the latter chooses to confront him. While Gandhi stands for unity, and is shown as a figure who wants peace to prevail in the nation, Godse stands for a person who wants an ‘akhand Hindu rashtra’ who feels a certain community is disrupting the peace.

Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh Review:

'Gandhi Godse: Ek Yudh' movie review: A timely dialogue on the ... (The Hindu)

At a time when the Hindutva ideology has seen a spike, director Rajkumar Santoshi denies Godse the pleasure of martyrdom and allows him to evolve.

In a stroke of brilliance, Santoshi uses the prayer “Vaishnav Jan To” as a hymn for heartache. He also addresses how the Gandhian idea of gram swaraj would have come in the way of government functioning as he could see the poor and the marginalised were yet to be freed. When charged with appeasement of Muslims, he simply asks Godse to travel across the country to get a sense of the diverse culture he loves to protect.

'गांधी गोडसे एक युद्ध' के ट्रेलर के बाद हर कोई ये फिल्म देखने के लिए उत्सुक था.

Santoshi's Gandhi Godse—Ek Yudh isn't Bhagat Singh good. Bland ... (ThePrint)

Rajkumar Santoshi offers a glimpse into uncharted territories — Godse's Islamophobia or Gandhi's celibacy but rarely explores the idea in its entirety.

After a quick turn of events, Gandhi and Godse end up in the same prison, and in the end, each has learnt a thing or two from the other, insinuating a change of heart. Rahman, but it is safe to say that the songs of Gandhi Godse will not be remembered among his finest work. There is nothing much for them to do besides the bare minimum, and the actors get the job done. Gandhi Godse — Ek Yudh shows the Father of the Nation (played by Deepak Antani), faithful to his philosophy, forgiving Godse (Chinmay Mandlekar) almost instantly. While Santoshi portrays the larger sentiment of a section of Indians today, he also takes constant digs at the Congress party. Gandhi had survived the assassination attempt by Nathuram Godse?

Cast: Deepak Antani, Chinmay Mandlekar, Tanisha Santoshi. Director: Rajkumar Santoshi. Rating: 2.5 stars (out of 5). The yudh in the title of the film, ...

In a war of ideologies, one uses ideas and not weapons, Gandhi says to Godse, who is firm in his belief that the path he has chosen is above reproach. Post-1948, in an invented universe, Mahatma Gandhi continues to play a key role in the evolution of the nation. The film would have been a stronger takedown of the false anti-Gandhi narrative that enjoys currency in certain quarters had it not been riddled with contradictions to the extent that it is. In one scene, Bhimrao Ambedkar (Mukund Pathak), who underscores the need for equality and inclusion, asserts that the Constitution and not a religious book should guide the nation as it forges a future for its people. Gandhi Godse: Ek Yudh means well overall but does not fare particularly well in imagining of what the Mahatma would have said to, and done with, Godse had he not succumbed to the bullets the latter fired on January 30, 1948. In trying to get its point across, it does a balancing act that appears to negate the gravity of the crime.

'It takes merely a day for someone to become Nathuram Godse, but it takes an entire lifetime to become a Gandhi,' says Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in Rajkumar ...

This seems to be the premise of the film and the intention. Even if the idea in itself might sound too far-fetched, it would have been interesting nevertheless to see how that would have panned out. "Remember Gandhi, one day the entire nation will be coloured in saffron," says Godse to Gandhi in the film. The film tries to ignite an unbiased debate between the conflicting ideologies of Gandhi and his killer via a dialogue between the two on diverse issues, yet, somewhere the screenplay keeps tilting off and on, more on the side of Godse than Gandhi's. But Godse never considered it to be a mistake in the first place. I will always be grateful to you for giving a direction to the country towards freedom but that's about it.
