Selling gym and farm, Trisha Reddy's father risked a move from ... (The Indian Express)

Her parents had decided they'll make her watch cricket matches instead of cartoons, and U19 World Cup winner was well-versed in technique at age 7.

Having the technical knowledge of the game at such a young age meant that she was willing to train as a leg-spinner and would bowl the fast one and leg breaks imitating Anil Kumble’s action,” says Manoj. When she was five, I would take her to the gym along with me and bowl more than 300 throwdowns to her. Some time later, Indian fielding coach R Sridhar also joined our centre as part of his coaching programme and he made sure that Trisha became a fine fielder,” says Manoj. When she was two and half years old, I started getting her to play with a plastic bat and ball. “I played in the state U-16 hockey team before I concentrated on my fitness business and job. Reddy, a former U-16 national hockey player, closed his gym and sold four acres of his farmland he owned over the years, to support his daughter’s training.

India crush England to lift T20 Women's U-19 World Cup (Hindustan Times)

They routed England for 68 and won by 7 wickets in the final, making some amends as the senior India women had lost three World Cup finals | Cricket.

The junior Indian team was prepared over 10 months to help mount a strong challenge at the World Cup. It was a creditable performance by the Indians who overcame their only defeat in the tournament, a seven-wicket loss to Australia, and then dominated the final. India elected to bowl and left the England batters reeling. The Indian bowlers skittled out England for 68 and then eased to 69/3, completing a seven-wicket victory with six overs left in the T20 competition. I am grateful to the support staff who have been diligently working with us and making us believe that we can win the tournament. It was the youth team that sealed the first success in emphatic fashion beating England in the inaugural ICC Women’s U-19 World Cup final at Potchefstroom, South Africa on Sunday.

Batters Soumya Tiwari and Gongadi Trisha shared a 46-run stand for the third wicket to lead India to a seven-wicket victory over England.

When Josie Groves dropped short and wide in the next over, Soumya was quick to cut through point for a boundary. Trisha then creamed Alexa Stonehouse through a delightful drive-through extra cover in the 13th over. Soumya also got a boundary off Sophia in the eighth over by flicking past the keeper and replays showed Grace`s elbow was in contact with the rope while pushing the ball away. Captain Shafali Verma, who turned 19 on Saturday, began the chase by flicking a down-leg delivery from Hannah Baker through fine leg for four, before lofting Sophia Smale over long-off for a humongous six in the next over. What a performance by the girls at the U-19 Womens World Cup. After a superb bowling performance coupled with some outstanding fielding helped India bowl out England for just 68, Soumya (24 not out) and Trisha (24) stitched a vital partnership to give India their first-ever World Cup title in women`s cricket.

Australia's batting looks a little more shaky with not much experience in India bar veterans Steve Smith and David Warner, who has a poor record over there. Australia's quicks, especially Cummins, can bowl indefatigable spells which are crucial to surviving the sapping conditions in India. They might not get India more vulnerable with the hosts to be without injured stars Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant, who recently was involved in a horrendous car crash. Without Green's sharp seamers, Australia will more than likely need to use one of their backup spinners - Mitchell Swepson, Ashton Agar and uncapped Todd Murphy. Only Andrew Strauss' England, who are increasingly becoming an underrated team as the years roll by, have conquered this formidable terrain in the last 18 years. Ricky Ponting could barely sniff a run in 2001, tortured by spinner Harbhajan Singh.

Ahead of the T20 World Cup, the Indian skipper opens up on what drives her and her team | Cricket.

When you will win games for your team in the IPL, you will be confident of replicating the same at the international level. The emergence of talent that we have seen in men's cricket can be seen in women's cricket (After the WIPL). We will see a lot of young talent because of the tournament. The gap between domestic and international cricket can be cut down. The confidence and positive attitude that they have brought to the team, is heartening to see and that is giving them the results. We are playing against two teams (South Africa and West Indies) who are doing well at the world stage. Sometimes when you are doing the same thing again and again, it can get boring but they keep it interesting. We worked with him (Kanitkar) earlier at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and on the Sri Lanka tour. Talking about skills and technique is not the primary thing (at this level) but giving confidence, and backing the players is the key. But day by day we want to improve. In an interview, Harmanpreet shares her thoughts on the development of women's cricket, her expectations from the WPL and the change in mindset among Indian players keeping next month's T20 World Cup in South Africa in mind. Cut to 2023, India's U19 team has won the inaugural World Cup - India's first world title in women's cricket, the senior team gets the same match fees as men and the Women's Premier League (WPL) is slated to begin next year.
