South Africa chased down England's total of 342, captain Temba Bavuma hitting 109 before David Miller's 58 not out clinched victory in the second one-day ...
When the South Africa captain reached his century, having battled cramp in the 90s, he leapt into the air, pointed to the name on the back of his shirt and then beat his chest with his clenched right fist. I wanted to show that I deserve to be in this team and I think I did that today.” A fine, diving catch by Jos Buttler off Olly Stone saw the back of Heinrich Klaasen for 27 and when Adil Rashid slipped a googly past Aiden Markram’s inside edge to bowl him for 49 the result was suddenly in the balance. Ruthless against the short ball and one of the few South Africa batsmen untroubled by Curran’s clever cutters, he punched his way to 58 not out while Marco Jansen heaved Rashid for a leg-side six to calm the nerves. Brook and Ben Duckett batted with sensible caution on a wicket which, unusually, had been watered the day before by a cautious groundsman guarding against the fierce sun and 35C temperature. He is the only member of his 16-man squad not considered good enough to play in the country’s shiny new T20 league.

[Quinton de Kock](https://sports.ndtv.com/cricket/players/1577-quinton-de-kock-playerprofile) made a fast start, putting on 77 for the first wicket in 12 overs. [Moeen Ali](https://sports.ndtv.com/cricket/players/42413-moeen-munir-ali-playerprofile) was also in fine form for England, hitting 51 off 45 balls and sharing a fifth wicket stand of 106 with Buttler. He reacted in emotional fashion when he hit the next ball from [Adil Rashid](https://sports.ndtv.com/cricket/players/1142-adil-rashid-playerprofile) through the covers for four. "It was a brilliant game of cricket and a great chase by South Africa." [Harry Brook](https://sports.ndtv.com/cricket/players/115158-harry-brook-playerprofile), playing in his second one-day international after being dismissed for nought in the first match on Friday, made 80 off 75 balls. [Temba Bavuma](https://sports.ndtv.com/cricket/players/1540-temba-bavuma-playerprofile) hit a century to lead his team to a series-clinching five-wicket win in the second one-day international against England at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein on Sunday. He was the only member of the South African team not signed up for the country's new Twenty20 league and his place in the national white-ball teams had been questioned because of a perceived inability to score at the rapid rate required in modern limited overs cricket. "We knew we had to come out and play. England struggled initially, losing both openers inside the first seven overs, but prospered as batting conditions eased. "It was very special," said Bavuma.
Kagiso Rabada, Sisanda Magala and Tabraiz Shamsi sit out for hosts, Chris Woakes and Reece Topley in for England.
They will also not have to toil on what is expected to be a flat surface, with more runs in it than Friday's. An almost all-new South Africa attack will make use of a fresh strip in the second ODI against England. England also made changes to their bowling combination.
OVER 45: ENG 279/6 (Buttler 66 Curran 3). The injury to De Kock and the blow on Parnell's toe as well as the 30C heat have pushed South Africa perilously close ...
Malan leaves the firts alone but the next is fuller and he cuffs it through midwicket for a single. He flashes a cut for a single and Brook brings up England's hundred with a whisk off the pads for two and follows that with a back-foot drive on the up for two more. Malan shuffles across to the next one again and plays a wristy flick for four fine. Nigidi is superb in South Africa and he ends the over with another brute that lifts and rags across Duckett, taking the shoulder of the bat and flies over second slip for a single. Malan does attempt a drive, doesn't time it and the ball squirts off the inside edge. The next one bounces a bit higher and consequently comes off the inside edge for only two this time. But Brook is ready for it, helicopters round and carts it on the hook for six high over deep backward square. Moeen creams the next ball down the ground for four and Jansen takes his revenge with a nasty short ball that crashes into his ribs. England are given a free hit for a no ball awarded when Klaasen knocked over the stumps before the ball reached the batsman. Here comes another at 92.5mph to end the over and Woakes jack-knifes out of the road. After Woakes takes another two down to third man, this one properly gathered by Hendricks, Jansen tempts him one that rears up a bit higher and takes the edge as he retreated to leg. The next ball is slow again from Ngidi and Buttler belts it out of the ground for a steepling six over midwicket.

South Africa captain Temba Bavumas 109 helps his side complete a brilliant run chase in Bloemfontein; England post target of 343 after skipper Jos Buttler ...
"It is a measure of how poorly they have played in the last few years and you felt Bavuma had a point to prove. To come back from early wickets and post the score we did was pleasing but it was a great chase. A side of that ability should be qualifying in the top eight. It was good I reminded myself how to count to a hundred! However, it was Bavuma who got his side off to a flying start. Bavuma led from the front and the middle order had great momentum.

They still have the threat of Sri Lanka going past them to the top eight. The maximum number of points Sri Lanka can accumulate is 107, if they win all three ODIs against the Kiwis. South Africa has one more match left in this series against England, before a further two games against the Netherlands at the end of March and the start of April. With the bat, it was about understanding the conditions well and using it to our advantage. Earlier, put to bat first by South Africa, England put up a total of 342/7 in 50 overs. This was a good way to test our way of playing.
