After the movie ended, I asked the audience, “How many of you have a grandfather or grandfathers that you really love?” There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. I paused the movie at various points and discussed Gandhi’s life and the different phases of the Freedom movement. Many had heard about the protest, seen it on TV, or driven past it on the way out of Delhi. As I packed up my laptop and got ready to leave, one 13-year old came up and said, “Those students who laughed, they’ll believe anything they read on WhatsApp. I saw it happen,” that makes students sit up and pay attention. Later via email, I asked the students why they had laughed at the murder of an old man. I then asked how many of them wished they had more courage to stand up to bullies and do the right thing even when everyone around them was doing the wrong thing. A lot of students raised their hands. This happened during a guided movie viewing session which a school, concerned about the rapid erosion of secular values in society, had requested me to conduct In a series of articles and videos, The Wire takes stock of Gandhi’s murder, and delves deeper into the forces and ideas behind independent India’s first act of terror. It went on and on and on.

MK Gandhi and the pretence of the Left-Congress ecosystem of ... (OpIndia)

Congress has long divorced itself from the Gandhian ideals but it continues to put up with pretence of following Gandhi. | OpIndia News.

The dichotomies, however, demonstrate that all grandiloquence about Congress following in the footsteps of MK Gandhi is just humbug, aimed to mask the pretence and assert moral supremacy. “Cow protection is the gift of Hinduism to the world. Even Islamic terrorists using ‘gaumutra’ jibes to justify the killing of Hindus had not prevented Congress leaders from employing it to mock their political opponents. Cow protection to me is one of the most wonderful phenomena in human evolution. However, Congress implemented policies that resulted in the forced relocation of tribal people from their ancestral lands, which went against Gandhi’s principles of non-violent resistance and respect for the rights of marginalised communities. Gandhi believed in the importance of rural development and advocated for village-based industries. Senior members within the Congress party held a dim view of Gandhi’s ideals, with many within the party trashing them and openly questioning his beliefs. However, the party turned a blind eye to his recommendation and continued playing an active role in India’s politics. Though the ecosystem keeps milking the self-crafted legacy of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi to assert its ideological legitimacy and arrest its political decline, it has hardly been loyal to his ideals. As the British declared that they would finally be leaving India, Gandhi reportedly asked for the disbanding of the Congress party. Congress often turns to Gandhi in times of difficulty or crisis, as they have built him up as a leader who is above criticism. Every time an existential crisis bedevilled Congress—like its leaders facing corruption charges, questions over its disastrous policy moves, or doubts over their competence—the party quickly pulled out the Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi card, seemingly to deflect criticism and project itself as the sole guardian of Gandhi’s legacy and its political opponents as opposed to ideals cherished by Gandhi.

On January 30, 2023, India will observe Martyrs' Day or Shaheed Diwas to pay tribute to all the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the country.

He chooses the path of non-violence to fight against the injustice of the British government. In modern Indian history, Mahatma Gandhi remains one of the greatest freedom fighters in India. During this time, he started various movements to fight against British rule in India which affected the nation severely. The significance of Shaheed Diwas lies in the fact that Mahatma Gandhi, who is known as the ‘Father of the Nation’, led major movements against British rule through a non-violent approach. He went to London to complete his law degree and then went to South Africa to practice barrister. Every year, on January 30, India celebrates Martyrs’ Day by paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi’s Samadhi at Raj Ghat in Delhi.

Gandhi taught masses how to conquer fear (The Tribune)

Gandhi told us that fearless resistance is possible when we are confident that we fight injustice, and do so without using violence.

“The light has gone out of our lives, and there is darkness everywhere,” stated an overwrought Nehru on radio when he announced to his country the death of a man into whose feeble body an assassin, crazed by the excesses of his ideology, had pumped three bullets. He terms the turnaround in his thinking Gandhigiri, the reverse of Dadagiri. Gandhi, who had survived five assassination attempts, had said two days prior to his death: “If I’m to die by the bullet of a madman, I must do so smiling. Antigone defies the edict of King Creon of Thebes that her brother’s corpse should not be buried, and that it should be left for vultures and other birds to feast on. We can hardly conquer fear when our bodies and our souls have been tarnished by the violent politics of resistance. He was assassinated by Nathuram Vinayak Godse, a right-wing Hindu who believed that Gandhi pandered to the Muslim community. The objective of Satyagraha is not only non-violent resistance; it is also the conquest of fear in full confidence that the cause is legitimate. We were not troubled by fear or hesitation, our path lay clear before us, and above all, we had a sense of freedom and a pride in that freedom... We said what we felt and shouted it out from the housetops. Many of us, who worked for the Congress programme, lived in a kind of intoxication, wrote Nehru. In the Hibbert Journal of January 1918, Murray captured the impact of Gandhi’s politics in the 1917 Champaran Satyagraha thus: “Persons in power should be very careful how they deal with a man (Gandhi) who cares nothing for sensual pleasure, nothing for riches, nothing for comfort or praise or promotion, but is simply determined to do what he believes to be right. The Champaran Satyagraha set the framework of the Gandhian ethical and political strategy in the years to come.

He was that rare kind of leader who was not confined by the inadequacies of his followers. The sad truth today is that the staying-power of organised violence is almost always greater than that of non-violence. Non-violence was the way to vindicate the truth not by the infliction of suffering on the opponent, but on one's self. For them your willingness to undergo punishment is the most convenient means of victory. He destroyed the credibility of colonialism by opposing principle to force. In Gandhi's own day, non-violence could have done nothing for the Jews of Hitler's Germany, who disappeared tragically into gas-chambers far from the flashbulbs of the press. By breaking the law non-violently he showed up the injustice of the law. Christ furnished the spirit and motivation and Gandhi furnished the method.' In 2011, President Barack Obama told India's Parliament that were it not for Gandhi, he would not be standing there as President. became the guiding light of our movement. It was essential to willingly accept punishment in order to demonstrate the strength of one's convictions. King, more than anyone else, used non-violence most effectively outside India in breaking down segregation in the southern states of the USA. At the same time he was a philosopher who was constantly seeking to live out his own ideas, whether they applied to individual self-improvement or social change: his autobiography was typically subtitled 'The Story of My Experiments with Truth'.

I was always 5 km behind the yatra when it started and this went on for a week. He was happy to hear my views. I took part in the Bharat Jodo Yatra because there is an atmosphere of hate going on in our country. For instance, Bharat Jodo Yatris from north India had no idea what upma was. It is only a few rich industrialists who are close to the ruling establishment benefiting from this hate atmosphere. He was not a Congress worker. The enthusiasm for the Bharat Jodo Yatra was so huge among the public that I forgot all my pain. I convinced her about the ideology of the Bharat Jodo Yatra and after she got convinced she gave me permission to go ahead. I called her from Kanyakumari to say that I was in pain due to the leg muscle tear and wanted to come back to Lucknow. My wife had told me not to leave the children and go on the Bharat Jodo Yatra because I have a small business to look after. He realised I was a Bharat Jodo Yatri and without understanding a word of Hindi and English which I was speaking, he understood the seriousness of my injury. I started the yatra from Kanyakumari and on the very first day I tore my leg muscle because of the huge rush of public that had assembled to see Rahul Gandhi.

Humanity is like an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time they could seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. He can make his destiny, only in so far as he is allowed by the Great Power. When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. Man is supposed to be the maker of his destiny. Mathama Gandhi is considered the ideal figure that represented the act of truth and non-violence.

India After Gandhi | Book Excerpt (India Today)

Published to coincide with the seventy-fifth anniversary of Gandhi's assassination, Ramchandra Guha's India After Gandhi is a magisterial account of the ...

In the decades before Independence, Ambedkar had been a fierce critic of the Congress Party, and of Gandhi especially. Pandit Nehru has stated publicly that not a day passes without his seeing Sardar Patel and being in the closest consultation with him on all matters of policy and administration. Ambedkar was appointed Law Minister in the first Cabinet, and in that capacity adroitly oversaw the drafting of a revolutionary Constitution based on multi-party democracy, universal adult franchise, religious and linguistic pluralism, an outlawing of discrimination based on gender and caste, and a harmonious relation between the Centre and the states. Iyengar’s account, based on his close study of the relationship between the two men during the freedom movement, and more recently as Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister respectively, gives the lie to the alleged rivalry between Nehru and Patel. Iyengar wrote in 1950, ‘It is to the good fortune of the country that we have in Pandit Nehru and Sardar Patel two personalities who have characteristics each complementary to the other.’ He added: ‘For never has there been a combination of humanism and realism so complete as in Jawaharlal and Vallabhbhai.’ The politics of the present has posthumously set up Nehru and Patel as rivals and adversaries. Thus, as Iyengar remarked: ‘With [their] mutually complementary, but in no way contradictory, characteristics, both Nehru and Patel are not only able to grasp and solve the problems facing the country in their entirety, but to face whatever forces of reaction that may manifest themselves. Iyengar used a metaphor from what, in 1950, was already India’s most popular sport, to describe the work of these two nation-builders. As Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, Patel focused on the integration of the princely states, the reform and modernization of the administrative system, and the passing of the Indian Constitution. As narrated in Chapter 1, perhaps the most consequential outcome of Gandhi’s assassination was the reconciliation of Jawaharlal Nehru and Vallabhbhai Patel, Prime Minister and Home Minister respectively. However, as Vallabhbhai Patel’s own biographer has argued, Gandhi chose Jawaharlal Nehru as his political successor for sound reasons, namely, that Nehru appealed to a far greater cross-section of Indians than Patel, or indeed any other leader in the Congress Party. Ever since Narendra Modi became Prime Minister in May 2014, he and his party, the BJP, have sought to present Jawaharlal Nehru and Vallabhbhai Patel as rivals rather than colleagues.

After Gandhi's Assassination, Nehru Saw the Hindu Right as a ... (The Wire)

In January 1948, when Gandhi was assassinated, Savarkar was arrested as the mastermind behind the conspiracy. He was eventually exonerated in the Gandhi murder ...

In November 1948, he refused RSS chief Golwalkar’s written request for a meeting and told him that the information available with the government on the activities of the RSS was at variance with his claims. It is extremely important that no opportunity be given to the people of the RSS and their like to organize themselves and function in their own way. I have had messages of condolence from some persons of note who are believed to be associated in this conspiracy.”A year later, he again repeated, “It must be remembered that the RSS has always said something and done something else. He was so keen to give the impression that he had nothing to do with the conspiracy that he refused to even talk to Nathuram Godse and the other accused in public in the court as well as in private in the jail. He further said: “there is a strong opinion in the country, with which I sympathise, that no political organization or rather no organization confined to a particular religious group and aiming at political ends; should be allowed to function….I do not want, of course, to suppress any legitimate political activity. The trouble in Delhi was largely due to lack of information in time.” The Kapur Commission further notes that “there is evidence to show that many RSS members were members of the Hindu Mahasabha.” Morarji Desai deposed before the Jivan Lal Kapur Commission that “at that time Hindu Mahasabha and the RSS were working together”. The conspiracy appears to have been a fairly widespread one, spreading to some of the states.” “The policy of the Sangh is influenced to a considerable extent by its association with the Hindu Mahasabha. The title of the section in which the above statements are made is, ‘As it is there are two antagonistic nations living side by side in India.’ India is not a nation but it is the name of the state in which these two nations exist. Savarkar, the creator of the concept of Hindutva, the first to propound the two-nation theory, and the organiser of the conspiracy to murder the Mahatma, declared: “India cannot be assumed today to be an unitarian and homogenous nation, but on the contrary there are two nations in the main, Hindus and Muslims, in India.” He refers to “centuries of a cultural, religious and national antagonism between the Hindus and the Moslems”. In November 1947, Karyanand Sharma, the CPI kisan leader from Bihar, had warned that the demand for a Hindu Raj “was very bad and behind it there was a conspiracy to murder Gandhiji and Panditji”.

The Globalism That Gandhi Believed In (The Wire)

For Gandhi, real globalism lay in sacrificing oneself for anyone in distress anywhere, not in the notion that the world was one's oyster for economic reward ...

As well versed in the Bible as in the Gita, the Mahatma might have suggested that a truer test of globalisation lay in a Solomonic proposition: the real globalism lay in sacrificing oneself for anyone in distress anywhere, not in the notion that the world was one’s oyster for economic reward and exploitation. Gandhi was too alive to the mischief of every single one of these sirens to be taken in by shibboleths. It is entirely of a piece with his view that the individual’s freedom (Gandhi might have called it “liberation” or moksha) is always the ultimate goal. His opposition was a natural outgrowth of his paramount preoccupation: the liberty of the individual. We may have to do without many things which we may consider necessary, but believe me, when you have that frame of mind, you will find a great burden taken off your shoulders, even as the Pilgrim did in that inimitable book, Pilgrim’s Progress: ‘There came a time when the mighty burden the Pilgrim was carrying on his shoulders unconsciously dropped from him, and he felt a freer man than he was when he started on the journey. Gandhi’s globalism shines even brighter when he makes clear that this is no parochial or nationalistic instinct; he is willing to say that even within the same country, he would prefer everything an individual consumed to be locally obtained, perhaps within a five-mile radius.

The gun that killed Gandhi: Beretta M1934 (The Indian Express)

Mahatma Gandhi was shot dead by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948. Godse entered a crowd of people as Gandhi headed for his evening prayers.

Parchure was a famous Hindu Mahasabha leader in the city and the founder of the Hindu Rashtra Sena – a militant organisation which gave arms training to its members. He promised to help Godse and Apte in their mission, seeking the assistance of Gangadhar Dandwate, an arms dealer. Having the serial number 606824, the gun was manufactured in 1934 and issued to an Italian army officer either in 1934 or early 1935. At the time, Godse possessed a countrymade pistol, which are notoriously unreliable and unsafe to operate. Notably, the Beretta M1934 was a compact and light gun but packed a strong cartridge for its size. Ushering in the birth of the modern military industrial complex, the Great War propelled the growth of weapons manufacturers across Europe and the US.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi - JSTOR Daily (JSTOR Daily)

In a 1931 lecture, Mahatma Gandhi described a potential future for India, if only it could move beyond the caste system and communal tensions.

Though Gandhi lived to see India’s independence, he was unable to dismantle the forces that he felt stood in the way of the nation’s future. In order to give you a description of the future of India as I conceive it, I shall tell you in as few words as possible what India is at present. We have within this population our own Hindu-Moslem-Sikh problem, or, as it is called, the problem of minorities.

Kerala remembers Mahatma Gandhi on his 75th death anniversary (The Hindu)

State government and various organisations, including political parties, hold meetings to recollect Gandhi's politically and socially relevant messages.

In August 1920, Gandhi held discussions with Hindu and Muslim community leaders in Malabar to garner support for the Khilafat Movement. Antony accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of fanning the flames of hate to maintain the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) hold on power. “The Congress has attempted to forge a unity of purpose among secular democratic parties to defeat the BJP,” he said. Gandhi’s concept of India ran against the grain of the Hindu majoritarian nationalism espoused and advanced by the Sangh Parivar,” said Mr. But the RSS now controlled the government and was politically intent on bending the Constitution to its will. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said Gandhi was painfully conscious of the threat posed to the polity by majoritarian communalism.

Jayakumar said, pointing to the need for a spiritualisation of politics and a compatibility between modes and goals. Intolerance spawns riots, he said while delivering a lecture on ‘Fading morality and Gandhian corrective measures’ as part of a lecture series on Mahatma Gandhi organised by the Chavara Cultural Centre in connection with the 75th anniversary of Gandhi’s assassination on Monday. Even after 75 years of the Mahatma’s assassination, there is not much change in the political situation given the threat posed by the communal-divisive agenda of the Sangh Parivar forces. Jayakumar has said that when morality becomes a thing of the past, lack of sympathy on the part of governments rises. “It is expensive to get justice from a government that stays away from the commoner. Writer Pratima Asher inaugurated a meeting and garlanded the Gandhi statue near Koovapadam.

Gandhi still lives on - Lagatar English (Lagatar English)

Sometime back I received a Whats App message about a film ' Why I killed Gandhi'. The sender was recommending that the film must be seen. A biographical drama ...

Needless to say that most named Gandhi and rightly was he given the title of man of the millennium. In the year 1969, the British Government issued a stamp on Gandhi to mark his centenary. Gandhi is a personality that transcends Gandhi the person. It is because of this that even after 75 years of his death Gandhi is discussed, debated and talked about on various fora. The fact is that there cannot be a course on Ethics without Gandhi. The truth is that Gandhi continues to be amidst us. That was the first time that someone from outside the Royal Family was given a place on stamps. The things Gandhi stood for are difficult to capture in a piece or even a volume and naturally people find it difficult to understand him.One can only try to know him through his actions. While the connotations of this act may be many, the simple conclusion is that Gandhi cannot die. No wonder someone like Albert Einstein had to say that generations to come would find it difficult to believe that someone like Gandhi actually lived and moved on this earth. His ideas, his philosophy, his concerns, his advocacy for truth and non violence, and most importantly is purity and integrity. The very fact that some quarters realise the need to systematically run a campaign to justify Gandhi assassination, suggests that even the detractors know that the act was not right and are seeking to rationalize it. As a course instructor in a leading institute teaching Business Ethics to MBA students I have found Gandhi fitting in the curriculum even without a mention of his name. A biographical drama based on the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, the movie is a 45 minute drama explaining the stand of Nathuram Godse as given during his trial in the court room.
