How to watch the rare green comet at its closest approach on ... (The Indian Express)

A green comet, dubbed C/2022 E3 (ZTF), is expected to make its closest approach to our planet on Wednesday, February 13. Here is how you can view the comet ...

This dust constantly streams away from the comet, and its density at any particular time is based on various parameters, including the rate of sublimation of ice from the comet and the amount of dust that is mixed in with the ice. C/2022 E3 (ZTF) will make its closest approach to Earth on February 1, when it will come within 0.28 astronomical units of our planet, or about 41 kilometres away. [ recently discovered comet called C/2022 E3 (ZTF) is now passing through the solar system](https://indianexpress.com/article/technology/science/comet-c-2022-e3-ztf-earth-close-approach-2023-8358179/) and could potentially even be visible to the naked eye.

The comet will move south and reach the head of the Orion constellation. When ultraviolet light from the sun excites the diatomic carbon, it gives off light, creating a green coma (nebulous halo) around the comet’s nucleus. C/2022 E3 is not as frequent a visitor as others of its kind — think Halley's Comet that appears every 76 years. The ‘green comet,’ officially designated C/2022 E3, will be at its closest proximity to Earth on Wednesday and Thursday after reportedly having last been in the vicinity of our planet 50,000 years ago. It forms on the head of the comet when sunlight breaks down larger carbon substances.

For the first time in 50000 years it will be visible from Earth this week. Here's how and where to see the green comet from the United States...

If you're hoping to get a good view, NASA recommends that onlookers use binoculars or a telescope to pick it out in the night's sky. Star-gazers will be eagerly awaiting the phenomenon, which is set to appear brightest in the northern hemisphere in the early hours of Thursday morning. In the United States the comet will be most visible shortly before dawn, particularly on Thursday morning. We'll be bringing you picture and videos of the once-in-a-lifetime sta-gaing treat right here... Star-gazers across the planet will be looking skywards in a bid to to see the comet, known as C/2022 E3 (ZTF), which was discovered last year by researchers from the Zwicky Transient Facility. NASA describes this region as a “big, thick-walled bubble made of frozen chunks of space debris the sizes of mountains and sometimes larger.”

Understanding the Tails of Comet ZTF (C/2022 E3) (SkyandTelescope.com)

The mountain is an active volcano as evidenced by smoke billowing from fumaroles. Comet ZTF exhibits both a dust tail (pointing upward) and a fainter antitail ...

Fluctuations in the wind's speed and magnetic direction produce kinks and knots in the tail and sometimes sever it altogether like a scissors-snip at a ribbon cutting. Similarly, stars stack up across the distance from our vantage point in the galactic disk to create the glorious band of the Milky Way. If the Earth happens to pass through the comet's orbital plane, we see the dust stack up across our line of sight and form a spike or band sticking out of the coma opposite the dust tail. An ion tail points directly away from the Sun like a windsock in a gale. Despite a bright Moon in the coming nights, I encourage you to keep watching, as the comet makes scenic passes of Capella on February 5th and Zeta (ζ) Aurigae on February 6th. With little gravity to hold onto much of anything, the radiation pressure of sunlight pushes the lofted debris behind the comet's head to form a dust or Type II tail. Ultraviolet light ionizes other molecules which are carried off by the magnetic force entrained in the solar wind to form a Type I or ion tail. That's also when Comet ZTF will pass closest to Earth (42 million km) and the last time we'll see it in a moonless sky until February 7th. Heat from the Sun vaporizes their dust-rich ices, propelling gas and dust into space around the nucleus to form a temporary atmosphere or coma. To find Comet ZTF you can use the chart above or easily create your own at [magnitude 5.0](https://cobs.si/cobs/recent/) it's already exceeded the more pessimistic brightness forecasts. Everyone wants to see the "green comet."
