To summerize, Michael is a technically solid and has a couple of high moments after the entry of Vijay Sethupathi’s character but the dull screenplay and unengaging scene order comes as demerits. Sundeep Kishan gets a role that’s not easy to pull off, he hardly talks in the film. Sundeep grabs the opportunity and just runs with it, stealing the show. Essentially Michael has a lot going on for it, but the pacing (which many might mistake for lag) makes it seem like nothing much is happening. Later in a film, which is already filled with numerous characters, we’re also introduced to Vijay Sethupathi and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar. But if you pay close attention, you see how Michael is inching closer to his target. A man called Swamy (Ayyappa Sharma) is beaten bloody by goons in search of Michael (Sundeep Kishan). He takes his own sweet time, lingering in certain scenes when he wants a feeling to sink in. It’s a bonus that he’s also respectful to women. Which is why he seems to have fun when it comes to the way his characters are fleshed out, the detailing, the way the film is shot or even the way music is used in the film. Story: A young boy grows up with fire in his eyes and on a mission to get revenge. Is the film a classic tale of revenge? The second hero of the film is definitely Sam CS as he elevates the film to a whole new level. The background score deserves special mention for a film that is both retro and gangster oriented. The cinematography, especially the shot division, is admirable for a gangster film like this and adds value. This becomes one of the reasons for not getting a wholesome experience from the life of Micheal. Ranjith Jetakodi's vision of narrating a larger-than-life gangster flick has come to life in most parts and certain portions gives that adrenaline rush to the viewers. For example, the romantic conflict, though it's a major arc in the story, it slows down the film's pacing then and there. As he rises among the ranks, Micheal takes over the major bar business and is also assigned a task of killing the last man who was involved in the attempted assassination of Gurunath. The journey of Micheal towards his goal could have been much more immersive. However, the impact is minimal as the film introduces the emotional and core philosophy towards the drag end. Micheal Movie Review: A simpleton rising to become a gangster is a plot that we have witnessed a lot in Indian cinema. Circumstances put him in a spot where he gets to grow under the wings of Gurunath (Gautham Menon), a dreaded gangster who controls all dirty businesses in the early 90s. Michael is a labour of love that, at times, feels too laboured and tries hard to impress. However, the gangster drama has a been-there-seen-that aura that robs the film of its sheen. The film’s trailer indicated that this is a story of a man who fought and lost in love. He plays the gangster warlord with a poker face and Ranjit tries to add to his charisma by making him read books such as The Godfather, The Old Man and The Sea and Macbeth. Sundeep’s performance is the spine of Michael; he owns his part and looks like a man who is hungry and possessed. An asset to the film is the music by Sam CS. Anasuya is no stranger to a gangster drama (Pushpa - the rise) and does her best in the role assigned to her, as a scheming woman who knows to play her cards. Since the climax shoulders the weight of the story, the portions immediately post-interval come across as middling and even boring. Ranjit doffs his hat to The Godfather, John Wick franchise and several gangster dramas. Things do not go as planned when Michael is tasked with killing a girl and her father. We first see Michael as a young lad in a chapter captioned ‘before the beginning’ — before he became a gangster. And then there are movies that are midway between the two possibilities.

When the backstory is narrated and the audience is made to understand why Michael does what he does, the film becomes more engaging, but it’s a tad too late. Talented Vijay Sethupathi comes on screen in the second half and it’s actually him who carries the story forward. This film is set in Mumbai in the 1980s and Michael (Sundeep Kishan), an orphan who has grown up in Bombay, is the person around whom the story revolves. Apart from the visuals, it’s Sam CS’s score that really elevates Michael and makes it a big screen experience worth cherishing. By the time the reason is revealed, a lot of time is wasted in mindless action. A few months later, Michael is sent on a mission to follow the daughter of Guru’s enemy and kill them both. Thanks to his actions, Michael earns the wrath of Guru and things soon turn bitter between them. We get to know about Michael and his rise through the voiceover of a crucial character.
