Gil's return to Spain will be something to watch as he was struggling for playing time at Tottenham but his skill on the ball suits Spanish soccer well. It was one of four prominent deals caught up in paperwork around the world but it could be an important one as Barcelona are quite thin at right back for the remainder of the season. Their strength has been in a strong defense that has allowed only seven goals this season but Sevilla have also improved after Jorge Sampaoli took over in October.

Kounde plays a wonderful diagonal up to the head of Gavi who is wonderful in the air. The reigning champions' loss at Mallorca has handed Barcelona a golden opportunity to go well clear in the title race. They have gone 15 games in the league, home and away, without losing to tonight's visitors. The midfielder remains down and there is some movement on the bench. The foul comes from a Raphinha dart in-field - something he hasn't done enough at Barcelona thus far - before the ball pops up to Kounde who is hauled down. The pressure isn't unsurvivable for Sevilla but it is growing and Barcelona will be encouraged by their play so far. Poor decision making by Raphinha there as should come inside but instead opts to try and go on the outside of Acuna. Sevilla are really settled into a shape now and are unlikely to come out of it. Only one team is committed to winning this game at the moment - but they have shown promise when they've gone forward, or at least promise in that they are able to get forward. The Serbian midfielder heads the ball narrowly past the post with Bono rooted to the spot. Raphinha has not been good enough on the right with Barcelona needing to stretch the game. Of course, Sampaoli, who has set his team up to get a point and get out as soon as possible, will be the far happier of the two coaches.

No side has managed it this season in La Liga from open play, with the Catalans keeping seven clean sheets in eight home games. Even though it suffered an early elimination from that competition, Barcelona has been steadily improving and won its first trophy since the coach arrived in January, lifting the Spanish Super Cup. The coach arrived with Barcelona in ninth place last season and he steered it to second, qualifying for the Champions League. It is the fifth time Barcelona has earned that many points at this point of a campaign and four times it went on to lift the title. Xavi Hernandez’s team has been exceptionally tight at the back, conceding just seven goals all season in the top flight, with new arrivals Jules Kounde and Andreas Christensen key. Lewandowski, Raphinha and Eric Garcia scored for the Catalans.
