Pakistan allowed him to leave the country on bail to Dubai in 2016 for medical treatment, where he had remained since, even as he appealed against the cases levelled at him. The attempts to fire Supreme Court judges led to treason charges – the first time military leadership was put under the scanner in the country. Fearing the judiciary would block his rule, Musharraf fired the chief justice of Pakistan’s Supreme Court in a highly unpopular move. Also in October 2007, at least 139 people were killed in a suicide bomb attack on Benazir Bhutto’s motorcade in Karachi, as the former PM was driven through Karachi after arriving from eight years of exile. In June 2001, Musharraf won a controversial referendum extending his rule for five more years, and many say the vote was rigged. Musharraf joined the Pakistan Military Academy at the age of 18 and was part of the forces during the 1965 war with India. “I have confronted death and defied it several times in the past because destiny and fate have always smiled on me,” Musharraf wrote once. The armed forces, however, took control of the airport and other government institutions, leading to the removal of Sharif. With little gains and significant losses, as well as international pressure, Sharif later ordered the troops to pull back to Pakistani-controlled territory, a move which did not go down well with the military. He spent seven years in Turkey, during his civil servant father’s posting to the capital city of Ankara. Musharraf, who was in the UAE in recent years, was the President until 2008. Following India’s partition at the end of British rule in 1947, his family shifted to Pakistan.

The storming of the Lal Masjid in the heart of Islamabad by the army in July 2007 to remove Islamic fundamentalists triggered a devastating wave of suicide bombings across Pakistan that continued for several years, affecting the security situation and fuelling the rise of the Pakistani Taliban. Within weeks of Musharraf’s return, an election tribunal disqualified him from contesting elections and he was subsequently placed under house arrested in connection with the cases of treason and Bhutto’s assassination. Bhutto’s assassination in December 2007 and the return of Sharif from exile helped their Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and PML-N party emerge as the largest political forces following the general election in February 2008. Back channel contacts between Pakistan and India, under the governments of both Vajpayee and his successor Manmohan Singh, resulted in what has been described as Musharraf’s four point formula to settle the Kashmir issue. The growing differences between Musharraf and Sharif prompted the premier to dismiss the army chief while he was on an official visit to Sri Lanka in October 1999 and to prevent the aircraft bringing Musharraf to Pakistan from landing at Karachi airport. In addition to suffering huge casualties at the hands of the Indian army and air force, Pakistan was forced to withdraw its troops after then US president Bill Clinton threw his weight on the Indian side instead of brokering a peace deal as sought by Sharif.

Musharraf was the tenth president of the South Asian nation after the successful military coup in 1999. “I only pray that I have more than the proverbial nine lives of a cat.” Musharraf, a former special forces commando, became president through the last of a string of military coups that roiled Pakistan since its founding amid the bloody 1947 partition of India. Born in New Delhi in 1943, Musharraf was four years old when his parents joined the mass exodus by Muslims to the newly created state of Pakistan. But the peace process was derailed soon after his rule. But it wasn’t to be as his poor health plagued his last years. Pakistan allowed him to leave the country on bail to Dubai in 2016 for medical treatment and he remained there after facing a later-overturned death sentence. Militant anger toward Musharraf increased in 2007 when he ordered a raid against the Red Mosque in downtown Islamabad. Sharif had ordered Musharraf's dismissal as the army chief flew home from a visit to Sri Lanka and denied his plane landing rights in Pakistan, even as it ran low on fuel. "She is always calm in the face of danger," he recounted. He then reneged on a promise to stand down as army chief by the end of 2004. "After 9/11, then President Musharraf made a strategic shift to abandon the Taliban and support the U.S. The partition saw hundreds of thousands of people killed in riots and fighting. That led to suspicion that still plagues the U.S. Bush at the Waldorf Astoria in New York to declare Pakistan's unwavering support to fight with the United States against "terrorism in all its forms wherever it exists." But it would be its border with Afghanistan that would soon draw the U.S.′ attention and dominate Musharraf's life a little under two years after he seized power. "I have confronted death and defied it several times in the past because destiny and fate have always smiled on me," Musharraf once wrote. Obituary | Pervez Musharraf, a Pakistani President with a mixed legacy (The Hindu)

Former Pakistan President and Army Chief General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf, who proposed the “Musharraf formula” for peace over Jammu Kashmir between India ...

General Musharraf had resigned and left the country in August 2008, months before the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, but it was during his tenure that the conspiracy behind the attacks would have been made in Pakistan, where the LeT operated training camps. In 2002, Musharraf narrowly escaped an assassination plot by the JeM founder Masood Azhar, who had been released during the IC-814 hijacking, and ordered a crackdown on the group and its suspected backers within the Pakistan Army’s “special wing”. He was educated in Karachi, and then in Turkey, where his father was a diplomat posted to Ankara. But he is also remembered for the “Musharraf Formula” for peace in Jammu-Kashmir, where Indian and Pakistani interlocutors worked towards a non-territorial resolution to the dispute, which would allow greater movement across the LoC. to use Pakistani bases to bomb thousands in Pushtun areas during the “War against Terrorism”, and for conspiracy to destroy evidence in the Benazir Bhutto assassination trial, where he was declared a fugitive by the court. The conflict resulted in deterioration of the Indo-Pak relations. The army also believed that the conflict would internationalise the Kashmir dispute, which might lead to a speedy resolution in Pakistan’s favour. The war was triggered after Pakistani forces and infiltrators occupied mountain areas on the Indian side of the LoC. Musharraf, a four-star general of the Pakistan Army, seized power after a bloodless military coup in 1999. However, it turned out to be a catastrophic military failure for him as India pushed back the Pakistanis and defeated them after the three-month-long war.

How the Pakistan army's Lal Masjid operation led to the downfall of ... (The Indian Express)

The siege of Lal Masjid in Islamabad in 2007 changed the course of not only Musharraf's rule but also Pakistan's relationship with Islamist militancy.

Years later, he sought to disown his responsibility and denied ordering the operation while he faced a trial regarding the incident. The report by Dawn pointed out that the Pakistan military for months “hesitated” to take action against the leaders and students of Lal Masjid because it shared close ties with them. In retaliation, students and militants not only fired upon the Pakistani troops but also set fire to a Ministry of Environment building near the complex. According to a report in Dawn, the mosque also “announced a charter for proposed Islamic rule of the country, which envisaged a new social, political and judicial system based on the Sharia. The situation worsened in June 2007, when both male and female students of the complex raided a massage parlour in Islamabad, which they alleged was a brothel and kidnapped nine people working there, including seven Chinese nationals. However, many analysts believe that the biggest reason for his downfall was the 2007 operation at the Lal Masjid in Islamabad, which changed the course of not only Musharraf’s rule but also Pakistan’s relationship with Islamist militancy.

Pervez Musharraf: Pak ruler, who made war, peace and news, is dead (Hindustan Times)

He clung on to power for almost nine years, helping create the PML-Q party, before he was forced to resign in 2008 to avoid impeachment | Latest News India.

Bhutto’s assassination in December 2007 and the return of Sharif from exile helped their Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and PML-N party emerge as the largest political forces following the general election in February 2008. Reported plans for the Kashmir deal to be finalised during a possible trip to Pakistan by Singh never materialised as Musharraf became embroiled in serious domestic political problems in 2007 that eroded his grip on power. Within weeks of Musharraf’s return, an election tribunal disqualified him from contesting elections and he was placed under house arrest in connection with the cases of treason and Bhutto’s assassination. Back channel contacts between Pakistan and India, under the governments of both Vajpayee and his successor Manmohan Singh, resulted in what has been described as Musharraf’s four-point formula to settle the Kashmir issue. The military rose in support of Musharraf and took over all government installations, and Sharif was deposed in a coup. The tough-talking four-star general, long a favourite with Indian TV news channels, came to power through a bloodless coup in 1999 that deposed the civilian government headed by prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

But the old residents of the area don’t fail to remind everybody that the former President, military General and dictator of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf took his first steps in life in our own Daryaganj. In 2016, around the same time Musharraf went to the UAE for medical treatment, Golcha called it a day, soon after playing Vidya Balan’s Kahaani. Located in Faiz Bazaar, it was quite an imposing structure with separate section for ladies of the family. Musharraf had been living in the United Arab Emirates since 2016, when he was allowed to travel abroad on bail by a Pakistan court for medical treatment. It was a healing touch too late in the day as the former President passed away in exile in Dubai on Sunday. He was being tried on treason charges in a Pakistani court at the time.

Beyond the news: Pervez Musharraf, a dictator with democratic ... (Hindustan Times)

He was Pakistan's most charismatic dictator who for long held the West in thrall with his panache for drama and democratic pretence. | World News.

The commando who wore bravado on his sleeve was cognisant obviously of his vulnerabilities in a system dominated by Punjabis and Pathans. Keeping broadly his counsel, Musharraf responded with a faint smile when confronted with Hussain’s observations, in a 2004 question on the occasion of Indian journalists’ visit to PoK (Pakistan occupied Kashmir). In his interaction with the Indian MPs, Musharraf was at his charming best, seeing an opening there for the moribund bilateral engagement. It was at a meeting with the visiting leaders, including BJP MPs and others such as Lalu Prasad, that the general famously talked about ceasefire at the “blow of a whistle” on the LoC and the international borders. So heady was that first flush of the powwow that his new-found international allies forgot that just two years earlier, in 1999, he staged a coup against an elected prime minister, Nawaz Sharif. A man who’s no different from other military rulers is so easily beguiling the world by showing himself as a family man, getting photographed in the international media with his family and pet dogs.”
