Kalyan Ram enacts three roles in this story of doppelgangers that never rises above tried and tested tropes.
However, the rest of the film doesn’t rise beyond its predictable tropes and the climax portion is a drag. The remix of Ilaiyaraaja’s ‘Enno ratrulosthayi gani’ also doesn’t help after a point. The story’s trajectory is predictable and we know that soon, the three men will look like photocopies and one of them will unleash their devious plans. In this story, the concept of doppelgangers is introduced through a random incident at a pub. Amigos introduces viewers to the idea of doppelgangers right from the title credits, by showing how one can search for lookalikes using an online database. That word can be applied to the premise of Amigos as well.
Movie: Amigos Rating: 2.25/5. Banner: Mythri Movie Makers Cast: Kalyan Ram, Ashika Ranganath, Saptagiri, Brahmaji and others. Music: Ghibran
The premise of the film appears promising. With the exception of Michael, Kalyan Ram did not put much effort into portraying the other two characters, and they are also dull. However, the new director, Rajendra Reddy, brings a fresh take to this by incorporating the use of the Internet to find one's doppelganger. This time, he utilized the doppelganger concept to play three different characters. There are two songs, one is the remix of “Enno Ratrulostayigani”. In the wake of Bimbisara's massive success, Kalyan Ram's movies became all the rage.
Kalyan Ram played a double role in Bimbisara and delivered a blockbuster, and in Amigos, he tries to do a triple role. The Rajendra Reddy film had a good ...
Kalyan Ram aces the role of Michael but, in his love for experimentation, hope he doesn't do too many negative roles successively. The first half of the film is spent creating meet cute situations between Ishika and Siddhu and stretched with unnecessary scenes involving the families, Ishika’s job as RJ and so on. There’s just no chemistry between Ishika and Siddhu and their romance is insipid. Director Rajendra Reddy has tried to give all three men – Manju, Michael and Siddhu – different characterisations, but he has succeeded the most only with Michael, who has come scope for performance. A plan is hatched, Ishika is won over and the two get engaged. His parents and he go to formally ask for her hand in marriage and she ends up rejecting his proposal.
Amigos starring Nandamuri Kalyan Ram in a triple role under the direction of Rajendra Reddy has hit the screens today. Let's see how it fares.
The emotional bonding between the three lookalikes is also not showcased in an impactful manner. On the other hand, though the screenplay is gripping in the second half, the director would have worked more on projecting the key scenes with even more effective treatment. Kalyan Ram’s acting in a negatively shaded character named Michael is good and brings depth to the proceedings. Enno Ratrulosthayi song on the lead pair is canned well. His makeover for three roles adds authentic texture to the proceedings. He managed to showcase good variants between the three roles.

In the absence of a thorough build-up to the second half, 'Amigos' feels half-baked. And it is also a relief that the film is not a psychological thriller. The cinematography and editing are passable. Its good premise is undone by the execution. But the overall character design leaves phrases like 'Merchant of death' and 'Devil in the dark' lifeless. The emotional vacuity finds a match in the inferior quality of the rom-com track. The attempt to glamourize Michael's villain character is half-hearted. Before the film was released, Kalyan Ram said that he loved the script of 'Amigos' mainly because the villain is not a fourth character but one of the three lookalikes himself. 'Amigos' is not a revenge story and that leaves quite a few hackneyed plot turns out of the way. Much to the shock of Siddharth and Manjunath, Michael turns out to be a gun dealer pursued by the National Investigation Agency. 'Amigos' sorely lacks the ability to keep the audience guessing about what might happen next. The storyline is respectable.
