Kay Kay Menon, sharp haircut and colourful shirts to the fore, is clearly having a blast. Even a couple of smart things that the writers do– sneaking in a snarky sequence about pet TV anchors who toe the official line, for one– gets lost in this tad-tadaahat of gaalis. It isn’t as if the boyish good-looking Kapoor, who is front and centre in the narrative, is not efficient. The series slips in the fact of demonetisation, and of how corruption was meant to be curbed with the new notes, by slyly giving us corrupt, power-hungry netas (one is an MLA from, um, Gujarat; the other one, played by Zakir Hussain, gets a lot more screen time). The other main track belongs to the law enforcement unit, headed by the hot-headed Michael Vednayagam (Vijay Sethupathi), which is busy tracking the dastards responsible for this ‘financial terrorism’.

But one cannot ignore the fact that it is also walking a path already taken without much of uniqueness. The love he gives and gets is all farzi and add to it the fact that he feels all of that is real and reality is boring. Sunny gets three motivation points throughout the show to do the bad job and they all circle down to his grandfather but the climax for the latter comes so weirdly that it feels forced. He has a brain condition that makes him lose his memory but that doesn’t affect the main scheme of things at all after a point. A righteous man who hates to take the corrupt route and has the ambition to make a righteous society. Playing a character that will eventually become a villain but will also stay the central part and is also not morally right but understanding that money doesn’t bring class is a tough task. At one point he blackmails a top-order minister and you have to see that scene to understand his range. Dialogues don’t seem like written to read but feel like a conversation and that connects a viewer the most. He has the charm to make you laugh and also feel his emotions when he wants to. It is their writing that tries to give the antagonist a story that not only keeps him/her in one tone part but develop a character that speaks to the audience. It is interesting to see the writing trying to use the first season as an introduction to the world of Farzi and the story of his motivation to become a rouge killer. Sunny (Shahid Kapoor) is an interesting character that has spent most of his existence in South Bombay, right beside the most iconic spot of the city, the CSMT station.

It’s only in the fourth episode that Farzi layers a routine cat-and-mouse game with some degree of emotional complexity. In the bargain, a boatload of cliches sail into view – a promising young man forced by circumstance into crime, honest government officers who sacrifice their personal lives for a cause, a flamboyant villain, an ultra-loyal best friend. Curiously, the writers have spent hours in explaining the business of counterfeit currency, but have left the nuts and bolts of the story loose. In between, there is a staple but well-written track where Sunny infiltrates into the crack team through Megha (Rashii Khanna), an expert on counterfeit currency, who could see through the sham, but fumbles when it comes to matters of the heart. His family story is not even half as riveting as that of Shrikant Tiwari, but Sethupathi ensures that it remains palatable till Michael shares notes with Tiwari in the next season. As his ego and ambition get the better of him, Sunny gets sucked into a black hole as we get an insight into how a man gets consumed by circumstances. Farzi feels more like the work of a magician who repeats his trick on the market’s demand. Here, as the anti-hero Sunny, he remarkably blends brooding intensity with an impish smile in a role that has shades of his real life.

Yet they seem, for the moment, to have exhausted their bag of tricks: “Farzi” is the first of the pair’s projects to feel counterfeit itself, a tired imitation rather than its own, vital thing. As in “The Family Man”, the showrunners do some of their strongest work in collaboration with their location manager (Rahul Balmiki here), identifying underfilmed avenues and alleyways for their characters to duck into and run around. “Farzi” remodels a star into a character actor, a far less dynamic trajectory. It takes two episodes to source the right paper for counterfeiting; it takes three to assemble the task force to track the counterfeiters down. “Farzi” pushes its luck from the off with its uncommonly generic, get-rich-or-die-trying plot. In theory, that slate should be bolstered further by the return of nifty genre technicians Raj & DK – writer-director-producers Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K.

The ethical conundrums of criminal activity is something the story and the characters should convey to us, without the lazy way out of being preached at throughout a slickly made thriller. The emotional tug-of-war between Sunny and his grandfather drags down the pacing of the show in an unconvincing attempt to add heart to the story. For the rest of us, it sounds like a dramatised reading of an unfiltered, poorly written blog. But Farzi hits its dullest point when it insists on sermonising to the audience, again through Sunny’s omnipresent mind voice, about the follies of greed and counterfeiting money. Michael’s backstory about being an “encounter specialist” and the journalist who exposed him reflects the tendency of Indian cinema to felicitate such measures as heroism. Farzi also offers Michael, a Christian character, in the lead and Firoz, a Muslim character, in an important supporting role, without using the stereotypes multiple cinema industries including Bollywood and Kollywood frequently dole out. It’s also a relief to watch a well-written Tamil character in a Hindi production, even though that bar is quite low for Bollywood, particularly considering the depiction of Indian and Eelam Tamils in The Family Man. It’s easy to see a young man, disillusioned with the hand dealt to him. Overall, Farzi is an engaging thriller with messy politics, except when the emotional and romantic tracks bring the pacing to a soulless drag. Then there’s the question why Farzi had to offer a take on demonetisation at all, if it had nothing valuable to add to the conversation. He takes to it with a certain panache and swagger that makes you root for him. It even offers an interesting minor antagonist in the form of a performatively patriotic politician, constantly chasing headlines that can help him clinch elections, than caring about national welfare.

आखिरी सीन में जब थक हार कर वो ट्रैन में चढ़ जाता है तो उसकी आँखों में ही सब कुछ बयान हो जाता है. ज़ाकिर हुसैन को देख कर हंसी आती ही आती है लेकिन बेबी फिल्म में मुरली शर्मा का किरदार अगर याद हो तो ये कुछ उसी मिज़ाज का किरदार लगता है. जिस अभिनेता ने प्रभावित किया है वो है भुवन अरोरा। वो शाहिद कपूर के किरदार का दोस्त भी है, फिलोसोफर भी है, कुछ हद तक गाइड भी है यानि मुन्ना भाई का सर्किट है. पुलिस से बचने के लिए रास्ते में नोट उड़ाने का तरीका हो या पुलिस चीफ के कमरे में ट्रांसमीटर छुपाने तक (फ़र्ज़ी में राशि खन्ना के फ़ोन में टैपिंग सॉफ्टवेयर इनस्टॉल कर के)…ऐसी कई बातें हैं जो कि फ़र्ज़ी को ब्रेकिंग बैड का भारतीय वर्शन बनाती हैं. रेजिना कसेंड्रा की एक फ्लॉप और बोरिंग वेब सीरीज “जांबाज़ हिंदुस्तान के” हाल ही में रिलीज़ हुई है. अजय देवगन के साथ उन्हें रुद्रा नाम की वेब सीरीज में प्रमुख भूमिका में देखा गया है. शाहिद से इतने काम की उम्मीद तो की ही जाती है जबकि वो इस से ज़्यादा काबिल हैं. ये बात बताना इसलिए ज़रूरी है कि पूरी प्रोसेस में काफी समय लगता है और प्रिंटिंग की प्रोसेस होते समय कोई प्रेस के अंदर आ जाये तो मशीन को छू कर, मशीन पर चढ़ी प्लेट को और आस पास बिखरे टेस्ट रन के पेपर देख के समझ सकता है कि क्या चल रहा है, क्या छप रहा है. शाहिद और फिरोज (कमाल के अभिनेता भुवन अरोरा) जब नोटों के पहाड़ पर बैठते हैं या जब वो नोट छाप रहे होते हैं और अचानक पुलिस आ जाती है तो शाहिद अपने हाथ में बड़ा पाना ले कर उसे मारने की सोचने लगता है और फिर बड़े अफसर का फ़ोन आने से पुलिस को जाना पड़ता है, बिना छापा मारे तो एक दम ब्रेकिंग बैड नज़र आता है. अपने एक पुराने खुराफाती स्टूडेंट की मदद से वो अपने केमिस्ट्री के ज्ञान का इस्तेमाल एक बेहतरीन ड्रग बनाने के लिए करता है. जब शाहिद कपूर कहता है कि वो जो भी कर रहा है वो उसे अंदर से गलत नहीं लग रहा तो हमें ब्रेकिंग बैड के ब्रायन क्रैंस्टन की याद आ ही जाती है. जब दो सॉफ्टवेयर इंजीनियर सब कुछ छोड़ के फिल्म या वेब सीरीज बनाते हैं तो उम्मीद होती है कि उनकी एप्रोच कुछ इसी तरह की होगी.
