The introduction of Lithium-ion Batteries (LiB) has revolutionised numerous sectors, most prominently the EV industry. A high estimate scenario is equivalent to the combination of high, moderate and low confidence estimates (G1+G2+G3),” UN says. These batteries take advantage of lithium’s light weight and high electrochemical potential and make it possible to power cars and trucks by using renewable, carbon-neutral sources of energy (for example, solar, hydro, or wind) instead of gasoline or diesel. “Lithium is used in certain psychiatric medications and in dental ceramics. And according to the union ministry of mines & coals, here’s what India has been doing in the past few years: According to the US Geological Survey (USGS) Mineral Commodity Summaries, 2022: Identified lithium resources globally have been revised to 80 million tonne. On February 9, the Geological Survey of India announced that lithium reserves have been found for the first time in India in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). “...GSI, for the first time established 5.9 million tonnes inferred resources (G3) of lithium in Salal-Haimana area of Reasi district of J&K,” the statement read. But before getting into where India stands, how this lithium from J&K can be used and more, it is important to understand one thing from the GSI statement. With a specific gravity of 0.534, it is about half as dense as water and the lightest of all metals. Lithium occurs in most rocks as a trace element, with the lithium substituting for magnesium in common rock-forming minerals,” USGS says. Most of us are now familiar with lithium — what with its uses ranging from mobile phones and laptops to electric vehicles?

The lithium-ion battery pack, one of the costliest key parts of an EV, should get more affordable soon thanks to local raw materials.
For instance, the battery pack of a Nexon EV costs around Rs 7 lakh, while the SUV itself is priced at around Rs 15 lakh. With India at 5.9 million tonnes, it is now one of the countries in the world with the largest lithium reserves. Currently, Chile has the largest lithium reserves of 9.3 million tonnes, followed by Australia with 6.2 million tonnes. The electric vehicles produced or assembled in India use imported lithium-ion batteries, thus increasing their overall cost. However, the production and refining in itself is a complicated task and requires cutting-edge technology. 5.9 million tonnes of lithium has been discovered along with 51 mineral blocks of lithium and gold.

The finding of the Lithium reserve in Jammu and Kashmir has the potential to change India's position in the world. Here we decode how.
The recent discovery makes India the fifth country with the largest lithium reserves in the world, just above the United States of America. The J&K finding will enhance India’s ‘Make In India’ and self-reliance goals, as stressed by Mines Secretary Vivek Bharadwaj who told the media that the lithium deposit would help India become “aatmanirbhar". According to the World Economic Forum, there could be a shortage of lithium as soon as 2025. Commonly referred to as ‘white gold’, lithium is not only key to the restoration of the depleting environment but it holds the capacity to develop companies and countries with its value. Notably, Australia, Chile, Argentina and China are the world’s largest producers and exporters of lithium, driving the market of essential EV material. They ran a current through lithium chloride to separate the element, according to LiveScience. New Delhi: In a development that could strengthen India’s self-reliance in the area, the government said on Thursday 5.9 million tonnes of lithium reserves have been found in Jammu and Kashmir. India needs lithium for the manufacturing sector, and the country has had to depend on Argentina, Australia and Chile for any imports until now. Lithium batteries have a higher power density for more battery life in a lighter package. A study funded by the American space agency revealed that the big bang created a small amount of lithium when the universe was formed initially, but "the majority of lithium gets manufactured in the nuclear reactions that power the nova explosions", an article on the NASA website explains. A Brazilian naturalist and statesman, Jozé Bonifácio de Andralda-e-Silva discovered the mineral petalite on the Swedish isle Utö in the 1790s, (RSC). Not only this, but the element is also used in medicines to treat bipolar disorders.

These are some of the most important uses of lithium, but the metal is also used in a variety of other applications, including air treatment, metallurgy, and energy storage. Lithium is used to cool the temperature-sensitive components in space vehicles and military equipment, such as radar systems and missile guidance systems. Batteries: Lithium is a crucial component in the production of rechargeable batteries for a wide range of electronic devices, including smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicles. This makes it possible to produce glass that is lighter and stronger, as well as ceramics that are more heat-resistant. This method is typically less complex than mineral processing but can take a longer time to produce a final product. This process involves crushing the ore and then separating the lithium using various techniques such as froth flotation, magnetic separation, and gravity separation. The mining is relatively easy, the refining is much harder. The process of extracting lithium from the ground is complex and requires significant investments in technology and infrastructure. Lithium is considered a crucial component for the production of rechargeable batteries, which are used in a variety of electronic devices, including smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicles. China is an anomaly in the world of lithium. "The unavailability of Lithium has been one of the reasons why India has been dependent on other countries for Li-Ion batteries and other EV components.
