West Indies v England: Women's T20 World Cup – live (The Guardian)

Over-by-over report: England begin their campaign against fellow former winners West Indies. Join Tanya Aldred.

In the recent white-ball series in the West Indies, England swooped to a 5-0 victory in the T20s, as well as taking the ODI series 3-0. The ones to beat – Australia – play their first game against New Zealand later this afternoon at Boland Park (Group A also includes Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and South Africa). A wind blows across Hayley Matthews’ and Heather Knights’ shirts as they wait at the toss. There’s a super vibe around the girls, we can’t wait to get going – we won’t be underestimating West Indies. She looks on the rusty side too, playing and missing twice in a row. England in red with white lettering, the flags billowing to an operatic version of God Save the King. On the whistle, the teams take the knee. A more equal sharing out of the pie would help. Matthews scratches a single, bringing Taylor to the crease in an IT20 for the first time since the summer of 2021. A scampered single brings Taylor to the crease who duly sticks out the bat and swishes at thin air. 4th over: West Indies 24-0 (Matthews 17, Taylor 1) Knight pulls a rabbit from the hat, in the shape of Charlie Dean. The last ball of the power play rattles off an open face and scampers down to the rope.

England Women send out message of intent with dominant opening ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

By Scyld Berry, Chief Cricket Writer. England fielded a team containing three spinners who really turn the ball in their opening match of the Women's T20 ...

England’s fitness was excellent, enabling them to make light of their run-chase after fielding in heat which neared C40’ as the sun throbbed off the surrounding hills. Alice Capsey, another of England’s new fearless hitters, ran past a legbreak in her teenaged enthusiasm - she is only 18 - but this must still be the way for England to go if they are to dethrone Australia. Almost all of the England players can expect to be among the 90 players contracted, but few West Indians other than their captain Hayley Matthews.

The start of the Kiwi reply was a surreal one. In the end, New Zealand lost three wickets for four runs in 11 balls and it was clearly terminal to their hopes, Gardner taking the final two wickets in the 14th over. That was backed up by captain Heather Knight and player-of-the-match Nat Sciver-Brunt who saw England home with an unbeaten partnership. Thanks to 42 from captain Hayley Matthews and 34 from Shemaine Campbelle. Kerr was bowled shortly after by Gardner and the slide continued, Hayley Jensen chipping tamely to midwicket before Tahuhu and Rowe were accounted for by Gardner in quick succession. The White Ferns sunk to 37 for four with Maddy Green run out and Amelia Kerr’s three fours from the three balls that followed was a fleeting show of defiance. Healy and Lanning clubbed together and guided Australia to 47 for one from six overs, their best-ever powerplay score against New Zealand at the T20 World Cup. There was a late flurry of wickets as Alana King and Tahlia McGrath came and went in the last two overs with Australia closing on 173/9 from 20 overs. Sophie Ecclestone finished with figures of 3-23, while Sarah Glenn was England's most economical bowler with 1-20. Alyssa Healy and Ashleigh Gardner starred as Australia overran New Zealand by 97 runs to jumpstart their defence of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. The White Ferns lost Suzie Bates with the first ball of their reply and they were rolled for 76 in 14 overs. Healy looked a million dollars for her 55, her highest score in the format since the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Final, as Australia racked up 173/9.

The power of England's top three has been much-heralded leading into the tournament, and Dunkley lived up to her reputation as she tore into the West Indies ...

[Stafanie Taylor](/topic/stafanie-taylor)after a long absence, but the veteran struggled for timing and fell for a 15-ball three in the seventh over. Katherine Sciver-Brunt also took 1/23 in her three-over spell. (ANI) [England](/topic/england)to a comfortable victory over [West Indies](/topic/west-indies)in the second match of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2023. Ecclestone picked up the big wicket of Hayley Matthews to stem the flow of runs at a crucial point in the innings and returned at the death to bag two more. When Matthews clicks at the top of the order West Indies will always have a chance, and her 42 from 32 balls ensured the game was competitive. Her figures of 3/23 made her the pick of England's bowlers, and only fellow spinner Ecclestone struck to remove Matthews for 42 from 32 balls, and a sharp run-out continued the flow of wickets, but Shemaine Campbelle (34) and Chinelle Henry (14) put together a partnership worth 41 runs in 31 balls to ensure the target would at least be competitive. But the quality of England's experienced middle order took advantage of the platform laid for them, with Nat Sciver-Brunt and Heather Knight easing England to victory with five and a half overs remaining and seven wickets in hand. After Sophie Ecclestone had led the way with the ball to hold West Indies to 135/7, England made easy work of the chase, with Nat Sciver-Brunt top-scoring with a classy 40 off 30 balls and both Henry finished as the pick of the bowlers for West Indies, taking 2/30 in 3.3 overs. Quick between the wickets and with the range of shots to find the boundary at will, England's top three fired them to 58/2 after six overs, with Dunkley the star.
