In the end the Eagles would have to settle for another Elliott field goal, extending the lead to 27-21 with a minute remaining in the third quarter. First, the Eagles quarterback took a deep shot after a breakdown in the Chiefs secondary and found a wide-open Smith who would have strolled in for a score had he stayed in bounds. It was a pinpoint accurate throw from Hurts, who was playing with poise and patience in the biggest game of his career to keep the Chiefs — and by extension Mahomes — off the field. Kelce had a quiet second quarter but it did not take long for Mahomes to connect with his top target, although it was far from a simple catch for the Kansas City tight end. Mahomes was in pain on the ground in the final stages of the second quarter. He was already hobbled. Hurts rushed for 63 yards in the first half alone and eventually passed the Super Bowl record for rushing yards by a quarterback (Steve McNair with 64 in 1999). After a few unsuccessful attempts to punch it in from Boston Scott, Kenneth Gainwell then appeared to have cashed in on a 3rd-and-2 to score the opening touchdown of the game. Philadelphia’s much-improved quarterback had a moment to forget in the second quarter when Nick Bolton returned a Hurts’ fumble for 36 yards to tie up the game. Hurts had been near-perfect in the opening half, scoring on the ground and through the air as the Eagles took a 14-7 lead. Steve Levy called it a “killer” moment in commentary and in the end it would be the difference as Jalen Hurts’ four-touchdown heroics were not enough for Philadelphia. Referee Carl Cheffers was also just as adamant in the post-game pool report that it was the right call, declaring: “It was a clear case of a jersey grab that caused restriction”.

Both the Eagles and the Chiefs clinched the first seed in their respective conferences, and - remarkably - both teams scored 546 points this season.

Doctors and trainers gave Hamlin CPR on the field and he was rushed out of the stadium in an ambulance, leaving players, coaches, fans and those watching on TV in shock, unsure whether he was alive. “I kind of like my privacy in a way, but you know, this situation kind of just brought me to the light of the world, which is a good thing in a way because I really feel like I stand for so much good,” he said. That and the extra point made it 21-14 with 2:20 left in the half. Mahomes hopped to the sideline, winced in pain on the bench and at one point, briefly put his head on the shoulder of a staff member. But seeing the 24-year-old who almost died on the field last month having fun at the big game was heartwarming. And in Super Bowl it came with just under two minutes remaining in a tie game. Mahomes aimed a pass for JuJu Smith-Schuster that sailed over the Chiefs wide receiver into the Eagles’ end zone. “I’ll worry about that in the offseason.” And his two-point conversion via the ground made it 35-35. He said some players, given the enormity of the moment, played out of character in the first half. On the game-winning drive, Mahomes had another vital rush for 26 yards that put the winners in field-goal position. Mahomes, who suffered a high ankle sprain on his right leg against the Jacksonville Jaguars on January 21, appeared to hurt the same ankle late in the first half.

There are just three Black head coaches among the 32 teams in a league (a fourth, Mike McDaniel of the Miami Dolphins, identifies as biracial) in which nearly 70 percent of the players are Black. With the 2022 season in the books, with a thrilling victory by the Kansas City Chiefs over the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, here are some of the issues that will be the talk of the N.F.L. Regardless, our concern is the Allianz Arena. In fact, we would speculate that there was a great amount of green paint used to color in some grass that did not quite meet the visual standards needed for a worldwide extravaganza like the Super Bowl. The grass, usually a Bermuda hybrid, is grown on a plastic base with very little soil and sand, allowing the roots to intertwine and strengthen the base. The NFL, of course, has played an integral role in that because the entire pitch needed to be replaced after just one game. That, however, had nothing to do with the actual groundskeepers tasked to keep the pitch looking fresh and healthy in Germany. His name: The Sodfather (not joking). The Philadelphia defensive coordinator, slated for a head-coach interview with the Cardinals early this week, will walk into said interview having given up a 38-spot in the Super Bowl, and having given up the easiest, most wide-open TD passes – two of them! With the score 35-all, Kansas City got a huge break with 1:48 left in the game. Again with a huge third down from inside the Eagles’ 10-, Reid chose a similar play to Corn Dog with Skyy Moore on the left side instead of right. The coaches thought the cornerback on Toney, Darius Slay in this case, would follow Toney and never think Toney would cut the motion short and sprint back to his original spot. Rice makes so much sense with what the Chiefs offense wants to be. Rice is much better in the Yards After Catch department and making catches over the middle, using his longer arms and compact frame to make tough, contested catches. I have a lot more questions about Johnston’s ability to be a true wide receiver 1, but adding him with Christian Watson as Allen Lazard enters free agency gives the Packers a young 1-2 punch at the position, regardless of who’s playing QB. The Pats have never abided by traditional draft logic, and Flowers could be their top receiver on the board. Against Georgia, he showed the ability to create under pressure and outside of structure, but his ability to do it consistently is the big question. He is the biggest of the remaining edge group and could develop into a bona-fide star if the coaching provided catches up with his unique physical gifts. The Bills offense struggled mightily to get anything going against the Bengals in the divisional a few weeks back and a big part of that is the one-dimensionality of their offense. The team has needed a star running back for some time, and Texas’ Robinson is one of the best to come out of college football in years. Many of the Bengals’ key contributors are free agents this offseason, so the team could go a variety of different ways with this pick. Richardson is a project reminiscent of Cam Newton with near ridiculous running ability and a truly live arm; the Lions are perfectly positioned to redshirt Richardson in the final year of Goff’s contract. Pitt’s Calijah Kancey lived in backfields across the ACC last season, posting 14.5 sacks and 27.5 tackles for loss in two years as a full-time starter, and could end up going much higher in the draft come April. And while the team is in rebuilding mode, a steady, mistake-averse signal caller was exactly what the team needed. Johnson started at left tackle for the Buckeyes in 2022 and was outstanding; he will be a plug-and-play starter in Tennessee. With outstanding size and speed, he is a natural WR1 who will ease Bryce Young’s transition to the NFL with a wide quarterback-friendly catch radius. The Commanders could go elsewhere with this pick but Witherspoon will be too good for them to pass up at No. And while the top of the draft will likely be shaken up by trades in the coming months, I will do my best to predict where teams go with their first-round selections this April. An accurate, creative and mobile passer with prototypical size, Stroud looks pro-ready and should be productive right out of the gate in Carolina.
