The Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles arrived at State Farm Stadium ahead of their Super Bowl clash on Sunday with all eyes on their young quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts. The sight of an elite-level athlete nearly dying on the field sent a shock across the NFL and the world. They win the toss and and we are 2 minutes away from the countdown clash. Kansas City’s kicker Harrison Butker booted the opening kickoff through the back of the end zone and the Eagles started with the ball on their own 25-yard-line. The Eagles went 75 yards on 11 plays to take the lead. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts ran for two touchdowns in the first half and also connected on a 45-yard touchdown pass to A.J. And in the end, it is not counted. With just 8 minutes to go, Kansas City Chiefs, after taking the lead for the first time in the contest a few moments ago, have expanded their lead to a solid 35-27 against the Eagles. Takes a two-point conversion and sprints out of the left, dodging a couple of tackles. And that should be the game with just 8 seconds left on the clock. Super Bowl Ad Review: Lots of Celebrities, Not Much Creativity On ... (Variety)

Super Bowl commercials in the 2023 game relied heavily on celebrity cameos but not on breakthrough, dazzling concepts.

Other ads on Sunday night contained QR codes — including one placed on a can of Michelob that viewers could scan to gain access to a Netflix golf documentary, or another for Planters that gave fans the chance to see more of a comedian “roast” of its popular Mr. Consider the one-two punch of a Michelob ad and a subsequent spot for General Motors, both of which contained promotional nods to Netflix. More marketers are dabbling in “gamification” of their commercials, says Greg Hahn, co founder and chief creative officer of Mischief, the agency that crafted the promos for Tubi. It feels like we’ve got this moment, who can we put into the ad to kind of get flash and pizazz for it.?” “I think I just wanted to see more,” says Kai Deveraux Lawson, senior vice president of diversity, equity and inclusion at Dentsu Creative. The crowd is awakened by the scene, which gave people more to think about than just buying a home computer.

Kansas City is super again: Chiefs beat Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 ... (NPR)

Chiefs quarterback and NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs to their third Super Bowl victory (and second in three years).

The Eagles tried to let the Chiefs score a touchdown (to give them maximum time to try to score a touchdown of their own) but Kansas City ran the clock the down and kicked a field goal with 8-seconds left to go up 38-35. The Eagles punted on their next possession (just their second of the game) and the Chiefs capitalized. The Eagles decided to go for two to try to even the score. On the next drive, the Eagles booted a field goal to extend the score to 27-21 and that was the tally at the end of the third quarter. Mahomes came into the Super Bowl as a two-time NFL MVP in his third Super Bowl appearance (won in 2020 and lost in 2021). For the first time in the game, with 12-minutes left, Kansas City was leading: 28-27. The Eagles would not be slowed - going for it on two fourth-downs with Hurts capping the drive with a three-yard scamper for his second rushing touchdown to give the Eagles a 21-14 lead. So it was no surprise that as the Chiefs opened the second half, Mahomes was back leading his team. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the NFL MVP who has sparkled all season long, was tackled late in the second quarter as he scrambled to get a first down. What the scoreboard didn't show was the Eagles dominance. The Chiefs' Nick Bolton picked it up and darted into the end zone to even the score 14-14. But Jalen Hurts made a rare mistake fumbling the ball — the Eagles first turnover of the postseason — as he tried to evade a tackler.

Rihanna reveals pregnancy at Super Bowl half-time show (BBC News)

The singer surprised fans as she delivered a hit-heavy performance at the half-time show.

Fans of Rihanna admit the singer doesn't necessarily have the best voice in music. And surely everybody can all be grateful that her set wasn't dragged down by her most recent release - Lift Me Up from the soundtrack to Marvel's Wakanda Forever. In the late noughties and early 2010s, she churned out chart-toppers faster than the industry's top songwriters could compose them. But monster hits such as Rude Boy were balanced with the somewhat harder-edged and lesser-known Pour It Up. Model Cara Delevingne was among the attendees sporting one on Sunday. I couldn't be an enabler," she said at the time. Instead, Rihanna deployed some her biggest hits as she hurtled towards the end of her set, climaxing with her ode to British weather, Umbrella, and the rousing, anthemic Diamonds. But what has set Rihanna apart from some of her peers is the sheer number of hits she has to her name. Weird but whatever." "I just couldn't be a sellout. [her representatives confirmed](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/music-news/rihanna-pregnant-rep-confirms-super-bowl-halftime-show-1235323383/) the singer was indeed pregnant with her second child. The singer rattled through several of her most recognisable hits, front-loading her set with some of her most danceable and up-tempo numbers including Only Girl (In The World) and the excellent Where Have You Been.

After seven years largely away from the stage, the singer and mogul used the halftime show to perform a dozen hits, nod to her nonmusical business and ...

And for Rihanna, playing halftime is a milestone befitting the scope of her achievements. Rihanna — one of the crucial pop hitmakers of the 21st century — needs the Super Bowl less than the Super Bowl needs her, and her performance was a master class in doing exactly enough. So in its marketing, the Super Bowl amplified how it was a coup to land her most visible effort in years. But the involvement of The event was the event. There was little variation in tone or energy, no aesthetic nods to the lightly themed set list. But for Rihanna, who [last year gave birth to her first child](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/07/style/rihanna-pregnancy-fashion.html), it was a stroke of performance savvy nonetheless — maybe the only gesture that could outshine, and reframe, the show she had just given. And she had not performed a show of this scale since 2016. Rihanna’s hits are plentiful — she has charted more than 60 times on the Billboard Hot 100 — and they are varied. During “Work,” she led them as if she were a tutor calling out moves but not participating in them. In 13 minutes, Rihanna casually performed snippets of 12 hits, universally known songs that don’t require much in the way of fluffing or bombast. She followed that song immediately with “Run This Town,” another collaboration with Ye (and Jay-Z).

Super Bowl 2023: the biggest new movie trailers (The Guardian)

From Scream VI to Fast X, the most expensive night of the year for new ads saw a string of enticing new trailers.

It stars Anthony Ramos in what seems to be a more contained character-led story, which given the wild excess of the franchise’s lowest moments, is not a bad thing. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon back together after 2021’s cruelly under-seen The Last Duel to tell the story of how Nike’s Air Jordans changed a number of games. With Paramount riding high still from the success of the jumpstarted Scream and Top Gun franchises, it makes natural sense that the studio’s biggest ever series would return. The 10th Fast and Furious film (11th if we’re counting spin-off Hobbs and Shaw) is also the fifth most expensive film ever made with reports suggesting a budget of $340m, not too shabby given how the series was seen as dead in the water way back when. Technically not a trailer for the latest Marvel release Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania but a branded tie-in, this brief, nay pointless, spot sees Paul Rudd’s miniature superhero feel judged for drinking a beer by an actual ant. It’s not the first time someone has tried although for those who endured 2000’s reviled adaptation starring Jeremy Irons and Thora Birch, they might choose to pretend that it is.

All the Highlights From Rihanna's Epic 2023 Super Bowl Halftime ... (TIME)

From her pregnancy reveal to her set list, here's what you need to know about Rihanna's halftime show performance for the 2023 Super Bowl.

Neither of those happened, but the Super Bowl Halftime Show marked her long-awaited return to music, and now the world waits to see what happens next. [historic game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs](https://time.com/6254557/super-bowl-2023-black-quarterbacks-mahomes-hurts/) was settled, the true winner of Super Bowl LVII was [Rihanna](https://time.com/6251429/rihanna-fashion-best-moments/), who made her triumphant return to [live performance](https://time.com/6250929/best-rihanna-performances-super-bowl/) on the biggest of stages: the Halftime Show. As fans took in her performance, much of the conversation focused, as it so often does in our gossip-centric culture, on her postpartum body. Her long-awaited show had been hyped for months leading up to tonight’s musical comeback, and fans were satisfied with the results. While it’s become customary for most Halftime headliners to feature special guests during their shows, Rihanna broke with tradition and was the sole performer during the performance, relying instead on the impeccable talents of her dozens of backup dancers, who wined, body-rolled, and dropped it low. While her epic performance more than delivered the show-stopping celebration of her many hits that [her fans had anticipated](https://time.com/6253747/rihanna-super-bowl-halftime-show-predictions/), it was also filled with plenty of surprises—including choreography from her frequent collaborator Parris Goebel, a cheeky Fenty product placement, and a well-placed belly rub that set the Internet ablaze with pregnancy speculations, as well as criticism that so much focus shifted from her musical return to the status of her postpartum body. Rihanna’s look consisted of a striking red bodysuit with a matching red patent breastplate from Loewe, worn under a jumpsuit in the same bright shade. For one thing, prolifically: immediately after the performance, Twitter would not load tweets for a couple of minutes. Her electrifying performance signaled that even though it’s been seven years since we’ve had a new album from Rihanna, the bad gal can still bring it when it comes to putting on a show. During the show, the word “pregnant” began trending on Twitter, with viewers reading into a belly rub she did while singing the lyric “life inside” and a quote she gave during a pre-show interview in which she said, “I’m thinking about bringing someone.” Others criticized the speculation and the mass effort to investigate a woman’s reproductive status, saying that the moment should be about her return to music and what this means for her career, not about her body. The sporty, futuristic look was complemented by white Hazmat suit-esque costumes her backup dancers wore, paired with reflective sunglasses and mesh undershirts. “I’m three months postpartum, like, should I be making major decisions like this now?’ Like, ‘I might regret this,’” she said.

Three Attributes Of A Great Super Bowl Ad (Forbes)

Many articles that review Super Bowl ads emphasize a single person's opinion or a view of the average consumer. In this article, I consider advertising from ...

Another ad that is getting positive attention for its high entertainment value is [Bud Light’s “Hold,”](https://admeter.usatoday.com/commercials/bud-light-hold-easy-to-drink-easy-to-enjoy/) which converts the pain of being on hold into an opportunity to dance and drink a Bud Light. While it is easier to deliver any one of the above criteria, it is quite difficult to do all three in a single :30 second spot. The risk of course is that it doesn’t compel consumers to want to buy the product. 3) The ad engages and entertains consumers in a way that drives recall. 2) The drama in the ad is connected to the product or service. It is easy to have a funny or dramatic story that is not clearly linked to the product - and therefore it becomes a distraction. An example from this year that did a very good job connecting the drama in the story to a unique feature of the product is In both cases, the shape of Doritos and the production of Weather Tech are differentiating elements of their brands and the drama in the ads reinforced it. Many consumers are not likely aware of the ongoing storyline and if viewing the ad in isolation, it fails to link the drama to anything that is actually unique or differentiated about the product. Not surprisingly, when brands focus on the unique value that they create for consumers, they are more likely to convince consumers to consider (and buy) them. 1) The ad convincingly and clearly communicates some element of competitive advantage about the product or service. After reading lists of Super Bowl ad “hits and misses,” it’s apparent that many represent an individual’s point of view regarding what ads they liked and why.

Rihanna wows Super Bowl in all-red ensemble (CNN)

There were no costume changes this year, but Rihanna nonetheless stunned Super Bowl LVII in a custom all-red ensemble by luxury labels Loewe and Alaïa.

And with the star spending much of the intervening time building her lingerie and beauty empire, fashion-watchers had speculated that she might wear items from her Savage X Fenty line. (At the halftime show press conference Thursday, Rihanna had also opted for an aviator jacket by Alaïa, which just days ago opened a New York boutique after more than 30 years without brick-and-mortar presence in the city.) Rihanna completed the outfit with a pair of red sneakers from Maison Margiela's collaboration with sport shoe brand, Salomon. The garment was almost entirely unzipped to reveal a matching silk jersey catsuit and sculpted leather corset (and, of course, a baby bump, as later confirmed to The 34-year-old soon discarded the scarf, before embarking on a medley of hits including "Rude Boy" and "Umbrella." This time it was a red leather maxi puffer coat — also with integrated gloves — designed by the label's creative director Pieter Mulier.

And while the halftime performance is unpaid, surely Rihanna and her same-race, same-gender predecessors would advocate for paying Black women equitably in every music industry role that involves compensation. The one [critique I offered in ](https://www.ebony.com/op-ed-super-bowl-black-women-fumble/) [Ebony magazine](https://www.ebony.com/op-ed-super-bowl-black-women-fumble/) was that Mary J. But certainly Rihanna and all the Black women who’ve preceded her would agree that greater racial and gender diversity is needed on the Super Bowl halftime stage, in the show’s production roles, at executive leadership tables where decisions are made about who the headliners will be in future years, among Recording Academy members, and in leadership roles all throughout their industry. [why Rihanna didn’t get paid](https://www.forbes.com/sites/marisadellatto/2023/02/10/why-rihanna-wont-get-paid-for-her-super-bowl-halftime-show/?sh=628799c45622) for her halftime performance – nor did Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, The Weeknd, and other A-list music megastars, she noted. Because Rihanna and other Black women work in an industry that is dominated by white executives and by men (few of whom are Black). Rihanna becomes the latest Black woman musician to perform on the world’s biggest stage.

Rihanna's Super Bowl 57 halftime show performance was her first live event in years, and her first since becoming a mother nine months ago.

A backing track with drum machines and singers kicked in before he was done. Many stars have made the scene at Super Bowl week parties. Another famous Philly fan, Kevin Hart, wearing a jersey, stood and flapped his arms. She wore a puffy, bright red jumpsuit with tight, rubbery garb underneath as she stood on a transparent rectangular platform that raised and lowered as she belted out the lyrics to “Bitch Better Have My Money” over the turf where the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs were battling moments earlier. The long stage allowed for extended pull-away shots as she stared down the camera and overhead tracking shots of Rihanna and her dancers. His anthem felt slow, but it clocked in at 2 minutes, 2 seconds, under the 2 minutes, 5 seconds predicted by oddsmakers.

Review: Rihanna's Super Bowl Halftime Show misses the mark (The National)

While delivering the hits, the Barbadian star's performance felt more suited to an awards show.

It was slick and professional but it felt like a performance more suited for an awards show than the Super Bowl, one of America's biggest TV events of the year. The choreography was tight and frenetic, as expected, but there was no method to the mayhem. The Barbadian pop star answered these questions as soon as she stepped on to the stage of the State Farm Stadium on Sunday night in the US state of Arizona.

Super Bowl 2023: Disappointing photos of Rihanna's halftime show (INSIDER)

Rihanna brought the house down with her halftime show at Super Bowl, but none of my pictures can prove it.

This was Rihanna's first time back on stage playing the hits in forever! Who am I to believe that my photo will matter? It was historic! From my angle? With my camera? I am just some guy at a show. We all hate social media for the same reason. I have no idea. But I am not a photographer. I was in the end zone at a weird angle trying to zoom in on an iPhone and capture a moment. As a reporter, I felt it important to capture these moments. Before the show, I caught a glimpse of what I assumed to be Rihanna's stage waiting in the wings outside the stadium.

Christian Nonprofit Causes Stir with Jesus-Themed Super Bowl Ads (Bloomberg)

Two of the most-talked-about Super Bowl ads on Sunday focused on an unlikely topic: Jesus.

What the Jesus Super Bowl ads get right (and wrong) about ... (America Magazine)

The Super Bowl ads are effective precisely because they're less interested in Jesus and more interested in getting us to think about our choices.

Many of the “He Gets Us” spots miss the mark, in my opinion, because, like many of us, they try to sell Jesus, when they should be trying to sell what Jesus sold: a generous and merciful way of life. The fact that each ad ends on the word “Jesus,” with the “us” highlighted dramatically in yellow, as though to say we are a subset of Jesus, is so overwrought and goofy I can just about hear my nephews and nieces in the Midwest shrieking with laughter from here. In the Catholic Church, we regularly talk about evangelization, and watch parishes and dioceses launch campaigns like “Catholics Come Home.” Much of the time I find those discussions misunderstand what they are meant to be selling. It’s to work toward that kingdom of friendship and mercy that Jesus himself was building. Jesus doesn’t need to be “reintroduced.” Trying to make him seem relevant to a media-savvy younger generation only makes Christianity seem that much more out of touch and cringe. As a piece, it is a lot less effective; the violence of the images is just too dramatic and upsetting for that tagline to land. The tag of the longer spot similarly seems to issue a call to action, this time directed at our resentments and hatreds. The first part of the tagline, “Jesus didn’t want us to act like adults,” only points us further in that direction. [about these ads](https://sojo.net/articles/what-he-gets-us-ads-get-wrong-about-jesus) and the broader “He Gets Us” campaign, which has produced more than a dozen ads like this over the last year, many of them intent on recasting some aspect of Jesus’ life, like his conflicts with authority or his crucifixion, in modern-day terms. You cannot watch that children’s spot without feeling the pull to be more kind and loving yourself. There is a white guy wearing a horned Viking helmet screaming into a bullhorn in the ear of a Black man; a woman in a car with a “Liberty over Lockdown” sticker shouts at a man in medical scrubs and a mask blocking her way. In the 60-second “

This Billionaire Is A Donor Behind The Jesus-Focused Super Bowl Ads (Forbes)

A group called He Gets Us ran two ads during the Super Bowl game on Sunday to spread the word about Jesus. One of the donors behind the ads is a craft chain ...

It runs ads on Christmas and Easter in the local paper of each town where there's a store, often asserting the religious foundation of America. Then there's Green's explanation: "It was a pride problem, and I had to get rid of it," he says, describing his leadership style. Today, with his son Mart chairman of the board and one of his granddaughters a new alumnus, Green calls Oral Roberts a "healthy university." It doesn't take more than a few minutes with the founder, walking through a local Hobby Lobby store, to see the reason he has been able to expand his company into a well-oiled, moneymaking machine without bringing in any outside investors. Some of the most precious pieces are currently housed in a modest temperature-controlled storage room in the Hobby Lobby warehouse. David Green has one of America's great, little-known fortunes, having turned a makeshift manufacturing operation in his living room for arts and crafts into a retail monster, with 520 superstores in 42 states. All hail Rihanna for turning a Super Bowl performance into the ... (The Guardian)

In forcing her audience to confront her physical reality, the pop star took ownership of her body – and she did it in real time, says Morwenna Ferrier, ...

It became the most liked photograph on Instagram in 2017, with more than 10m likes (she revealed her first pregnancy on stage in 2011 at the MTV Video Music Awards, but no one really remembers that). The image became a blueprint for magazines, sending an empowering message in an era otherwise ridden with repressed corporeal ideals, but that didn’t stop some shops from banning it at the time. In terms of the reveal, I simply posted a headless mirror shot on Instagram in which I gently lifted my tracksuit to show a tiny bump. In 2017, Leibovitz [rehashed the concept](https://www.vanityfair.com/style/photos/2017/06/serena-williams-cover-story) with Serena Williams, an image that feels all the more powerful now, because Williams almost died after an emergency C-section from that pregnancy. Do you have an opinion on the issues raised in this article? Doing it on a public stage, as Rihanna did, was not only bold. The celebrity pregnancy reveal is, of course, more public – and it has a short, but storied tradition. But the image of the pregnant pop star, cradling her belly in a red silk Loewe catsuit as she descended from the heavens on a Perspex box, is surely up there with the greatest pregnancy reveals of the Instagram age. In forcing her audience to confront her physical reality, Rihanna went past making a fashion statement. During my pregnancy, I wore clothes that rearranged themselves around my changing shape: jeans with elasticated waistbands from Topshop, a Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress given to me by a colleague and various billowing dresses in plissé fabrics from Asos, which I gave to a charity shop as soon as I was able to walk again. She took ownership of her body, and she did it in real time. The Daily Mail called her “shameless”.

For entertainment programming, the previous low was 17.36 million viewers for an episode of Alias on ABC in 2003. PT — averaged 15.5 million viewers, a low for a program airing immediately after the Super Bowl. The home markets for both teams were both hugely invested in the Super Bowl (unsurprisingly). The previous low came way back in 1975, when NBC’s nightly newscast had 15.92 million viewers. About 106 million of those viewers watched the main broadcast on Fox and a Spanish-language feed on Fox Deportes, with the remainder on Fox and NFL digital platforms. Given the high likelihood that more that one person was watching at least some of those 7 million streams, the true audience for [Super Bowl LVII](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/t/super-bowl-lvii/) is somewhere above 113 million. Rihanna's halftime show averaged 118.7 million viewers, making it the second-most watched in Super Bowl history.

It would also be a slight increase over the 112.3 million average for last year's Super Bowl. Fox also said 15.5 million people watched the season premiere of Gordon Ramsay's competition show "Next Level Chef" following the game. "There wasn't a primary brand that took over the Super Bowl," he said. The rating is the percentage of television households tuned in. That included 95.2 million for the 2021 Super Bowl between Tampa Bay and Kansas City, which was the game's lowest TV-only average since 2007. After Super Bowls averaged over 100 million viewers from 2010-18, four of the five games before this year had fallen short of that number because of cord-cutting. It was also the most watched non-soccer event in Spanish-language cable history. The first Super Bowl to be streamed, in 2012, averaged 346,000.
