With revenge in mind, can high-flying Bengaluru FC halt the Mumbai ... (Indian Super League)

The matchup of Bengaluru FC and Mumbai City FC won't be an ordinary contest given that neither team has lost a single match in 2023, with only the Islanders ...

So consequently, the three-man defence will be pinned back into a five-man defence because of Mumbai City FC’s quality,” he comments. Arguably, it can be about an offence versus defence battle, but the teams have also shown their brilliance in the midfield. However, the Fijian striker has been of core importance in the attacking numbers of the Blues. The Blues have only conceded four goals in their current run and they’ve been much tighter at the back. They’ll not be too many more changes, and therefore, the winning streak they are currently on, because of this system, will stand them in good stead against a very strong Mumbai City FC team,” Brown says. This precarious circumstance crops up a problem with regard to the replacements of the missing duo. Having netted 53 goals this season, the highest in the Hero ISL history, the side has three players in the top five goal contributors. In the bigger picture, the Blues have won 100% of the games in 2023 and picked up 18 points from six matches. However, come Wednesday, the revitalised Blues will face the brute force of the recently crowned Hero ISL Shield winners Mumbai City FC. Considering only matches from the current season, they were in 9th place and had picked up 10 points, with three wins and one draw from 12 matches in 2022. In the first nine matches, Bengaluru FC collected only two wins, registered one draw, and faced six losses that saw them scoring only six goals while shipping in 12. The win reinstilled faith not just into the players but also the entire team and the fans.

Three minutes later, Simon Grayson brought on Udanta Singh in place of Chhetri as the striker made his way out to a raucous applause from the Kanteerava crowd. Having gotten themselves back into the reckoning with Fall’s goal, Mumbai continued to push for the equalizer, with Jorge Pereyra Diaz heading over the crossbar when fed a cross by Vikram Singh in the 88th minute. The visitors responded by halving the deficit in the 77th minute, when Mourtada Fall tapped home a header from Rostyn Griffiths following a corner by Rowllin Borges who had replaced Sanjeev Stalin a minute before. The Blues doubled their lead in the 71st minute through Javi. The winger found himself through on goal but couldn’t convert as his shot was parried away by Blues’ keeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu. The hosts had the first big chance when Chhetri found himself behind the Mumbai backline after being put through by Javi Hernandez.

Sunil Chhetri shows he's still the man as Bengaluru FC end Mumbai ... (ESPN India)

Sunil Chhetri is 38 years old. He has played 37 minutes of football in 2023. But he put up a vintage performance as BFC beat leaders Mumbai City.

There was just one man on the pitch...at the very centre stood a 5'7 gentleman in a blue jersey speaking to a camera. But at 38, Chhetri is still a bloody good footballer and easily one of the fittest men on the pitch. The Kanteerava Stadium was taken over by the away fans and it was a game Chhetri would have loved to play in. As is the training policy, all the substitutes run the breadth of the field a few times before hitting the shower. Knowing Chhetri, that fan might just be the next recipient of the #SC11 t-shirt. He jumps over the advertisement hoardings, folds his hands in gratitude and blows a kiss. While Mandar ran away with Chhetri's match jersey, the BFC skipper kept his word and handed over a jersey to the fans before cupping his palms over his ears to seemingly drown out the noise and make his way into the team bus. Nothing's changed this season...except the armband has been replaced by a substitute's bib each time he's walked out of the tunnel in 2023, until Thursday. It's something you take for granted - Chhetri walking out of the players' tunnel with the captain's armband strapped onto his left bicep. He gestures to his teammates with an open palm saying 'hold on, hold on' and jogs towards the West Block, where the Bengaluru FC faithful have unfurled a banner that reads 'Immortal No. If only size mattered...he outjumps his teammate Aleksandar Jovanovic [who is at least a head taller] and buries the header into the bottom corner. Javi Hernandez curls a corner towards the far post.

It wasn’t easy to keep the momentum we’ve had going, we had won six out of six before this, and to play such a game against the champions especially when we haven’t qualified was difficult. The dressing room wasn’t buzzing which it is right now, so kudos to each and everyone who chipped in, right from the gaffer to the ball boy. Simon Grayson’s men endured a difficult run in 2022, as the Blues were placed ninth at the end of the year. The striker didn’t leave a single stone unturned and marked his first game of 2023 with a stunning headed goal against his favourite opposition, Mumbai City FC. Chhetri has found it hard to carve a place in Bengaluru FC's playing eleven, with head coach Simon Grayson persisting with the prolific duo Roy Krishna and Sivasakthi Narayanan upfront in their recent games. With this goal, he registered his eighth goal across 12 games against Mumbai City FC, his highest against a single opposition in the league.
