Latching on to a loose ball, Bipin sped in through the left but fired straight at Gurpreet Singh Sandhu who blocked it away with his legs. At the other end, Bipin Singh wasted a great chance to put the visitors ahead in the 43rd minute. It was Chhetri who gave BFC the confidence heading in from close following a corner past a stranded Mumbai custodian Phurba Lachenpa.

Bengaluru FC needs just one point from their penultimate league game against FC Goa to reach the playoffs after a hiatus of two years. ISL: Vintage Sunil Chhetri and disciplined Bengaluru FC end ... (Scroll.in)

Bengaluru FC won their seventh match on the trot to all but secure a place in the play-offs of the Indian Super League.

That should have been a warning to the Mumbai defence of the night they had in store for them. The home side deservedly took the lead in the 57th minute when Chhetri ghosted in at the back post to head in Javi’s corner. The Blues doubled their lead a quarter of an hour later when Jovanovic caught the Mumbai defence off guard to breeze into the penalty box. That Ramires chance should have been a warning for Mumbai of the danger Bengaluru possessed from set-pieces. Mumbai poked and prodded at the Bengaluru defence. Bipin Singh raced on to it from the left but Gurpreet Singh Sandhu made a very good save with his feet to keep the match goalless. The first big chance of the match fell Bengaluru’s way in the eighth minute. It showed the ridiculous depth in the Mumbai side that the silky Alberto Noguera stepped up to take Stewart’s spot in the line-up. It also helped that Mumbai looked out of pace in the match. Watching the pair harangue the Mumbai defence off the ball or giving chase to lost causes with equal tenacity, one wouldn’t say that there was almost a two decade age-gap between the two forwards. In the pre-match press conference before Bengaluru FC faced table-toppers Mumbai City FC, coach Simon Grayson was reminded that his Bengaluru side was the last team to beat Mumbai, way back in September in the Durand Cup final. While Grayson’s remark was tongue in cheek, his team realised his words and secured a memorable 2-1 win over Mumbai City at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Wednesday.
