“We only know it from her point of view.” Glatter is quick to add that the scene “does not let Candy off the hook in any way. It was brutal to imagine the reality of it.” “I do think [Love & Death] is genuinely trying to tell a complicated event and allow there to be multiple truths,” she says. In spite of her title, she lives on the East Coast. The real Candy Montgomery has reportedly changed her name and lives in Georgia—but had nothing to do with HBO Max’s telling of her story. “Candy decides that having an affair is going to fill this hole in her life, but she doesn’t pick the most obvious choice for a partner, because what she really wants is connection,” says Glatter of Allan. Plemons, a veteran of TV’s Fargo, confirms the miniseries has “a slight Coen brothers” vibe to it—“a weird, Middle America sort of tone.” Olsen looked back to the women covering magazines in the late ’70s and early ’80s to see who Candy might look up to. “Candy was always trying to create something more for herself.” The series references Nicole Kidman’s dark comedy To Die For in tone—“there’s a bit of humor and satire woven into a story about real people,” explains Olsen. The journalists describe Candy as the kind of type A housewife who meticulously prepared meals, volunteered at church, and enjoyed country-western dancing with her friends. In 1980, a petite, churchgoing Texas housewife named Candy Montgomery hacked her friend and fellow parishioner to death with an axe.

'Love & Death' Trailer: Elizabeth Olsen, Jesse Plemons Star (IndieWire)

The HBO Max series "Love & Death" starring Elizabeth Olsen and Jesse Plemons premieres this April.

Kelley, the creator behind “The Undoing” and “Big Little Lies,” wrote “Love & Death,” adapting the series from journalists John Bloom and Jim Atkinson’s 1984 book “Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs,” which told the story of the real-life case. The show is the second big limited series portrayal of the Montgomery case to premiere in less than a year, after “Candy” starring Jessica Biel and Melanie Lynskey premiered on Hulu in May. The series is a production of Lionsgate Television, in association with David E. Montgomery was eventually declared not guilty by the jury, in a verdict that prompted outcry from Gore’s family and the community. “I have done all the things a wife is supposed to do. Candy Montgomery was a Texas housewife charged in 1980 for the murder of her friend and neighbor Betty Gore, after Gore was found dead in her house from 41 axe wounds.
