Waris Punjab De: What is the mission of this outfit, floated by Deep ... (The Indian Express)

Waris Punjab De, which translates to 'the heirs of Punjab', is an organisation floated by lawyer-actor-turned-activist Deep Sidhu in 2021.

“My brother made this organisation for a social cause, to raise issues of Punjab and to provide legal aid to the needy, not to propagate Khalistan. The “social organisation” was originally floated by Sidhu as “a pressure group to protect and fight for rights of Punjab and raise social issues”. Sikhs who have fallen for drugs will be made followers of Guru again and will be given shastra vidya,” he said. “The original ‘Waris Punjab De’ which was formed by my brother is headed by Harnek Singh Uppal. Amritpal’s uncle, Harjit Singh, however, who returned to Punjab from the UK, claimed Sidhu’s supporters had made Amritpal the head of the organisation. We know how he died, who killed him,” said Amritpal, who had addressed the gathering from a stage put up near Gurdwara Sant Khalsa, built in Bhindranwale’s memory. [Mandeep Singh](https://indianexpress.com/about/mandeep-singh/) Sidhu, a Ludhiana-based advocate and brother of Deep Sidhu, told The Indian Express: “We never met him before. The fight is against the state… [The Indian Express](https://indianexpress.com) explains the origin of ‘Waris Punjab De’ and how Amritpal Singh took over as its head. “It is a platform for those who are not satisfied with the social reality of Punjab in the current scenario. When Amritpal with K-word wades into Punjab's vacuum, overruns ... (ThePrint)

Think. A big police station on Pakistan border overrun by an armed mob, a suspect freed, and the state says 'sorry, my bad.' You have to be nuts to think ...

The definition of ‘weak’ is particularly nuanced in Punjab and it isn’t determined by the size of an elected government’s majority. Punjab’s post-Independence history tells us that the state sees a crisis whenever it has a weak leadership; the leader seems controlled by Delhi and incapable of keeping Sikh religiosity in his political tent. The state was divided in 1966. Among the more interesting, less remembered, but relatively harmless things he did was to bring to India from Britain “descendants of Guru Gobind Singh’s horses”. If you are relieved with a sense of ‘so far, so good’, I underline for you the other difference. Then he goes on to say that if Amit Shah says he will crush the “Khalistan movement”, he’d rather first remember the fate Indira Gandhi met for making the same boast. One, there was bloodletting and death that day as a group of Bhindranwale’s supporters protesting at a Nirankari sect congregation were fired at in Amritsar. It took 15 years to begin the return of normalcy. A big police station right on the border was overrun by a mob armed with swords and firearms, an arrested suspect was freed, and then the state said ‘sorry, we were in the wrong’. Nothing will please me more than to be proven wrong on this in the times to come. The cruel fact, however, is that we are repeating mistakes of a bad past in Punjab. They stormed a police station next to the border with Pakistan — as sensitive a zone as you can name.

As Punjab gets plunged into lawlessness with Khalistanis creating ... (OpIndia)

KPS Gill had said that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is “not aware of what they are doing" and predicted the rise of Khalistani elements | OpIndia News.

Under the leadership of CM Bhagwant Mann the state of Punjab is left in utter chaos and anarchy while he claims that the law and order are in absolute control. During the hours-long standoff and eventual takeover of the police station, the Punjab Police was compelled to give in to the demands of Khalistani Amritpal Singh. Even if he is not on the same path, he will use a puppet to control the government.” Gill also asserted that AAP has ‘unwittingly’ provided a platform to radical NRIs who have a sole agenda of spreading terrorism in the state. He said that at one point, Kejriwal claimed he would either become Chief Minister of Punjab or will become first Prime Minister of an independent nation (Khalistan). As lawlessness has engulfed an Aam Aadmi Party-ruled Punjab, it is the right time to recall what KPS Gill had said about the Arvind Kejriwal-led party back in 2017.

Rise of Bhindranwale doppelganger on Punjab's uneasy terrain (Hindustan Times)

Punjab Police booked Amritpal and 30 of his supporters on February 17 for allegedly kidnapping and thrashing Varinder Singh, a Sikh preacher and resident of ...

For him, Mann is an “inspiration” for his patience and his ability to stay the ground. Amritpal rejects the widely held perception of a Congress hand in Bhindranwale’s initial projection to marginalise the Akalis. For instance, former MP and national commission of minorities chairman, Tarlochan Singh advocates a quick “healing touch” to neutralise exploitable anger on issues galvanising protests in Punjab: the Bargari morcha (in Malwa region), the agitation that has turned humongous on Chandigarh’s border for the release of Bandi Singhs (Sikhs serving jail terms for militancy) and the overarching drug abuse linked to joblessness. They don’t want to recognise that there’s a problem involving a large segment of the society.” On that day, farmers who were part of the farm protest against three laws that have since been repealed, drove into Delhi, clashed with police, and even hoisted the Sikh flag at Red Fort. He said his return to Punjab was triggered by the 2015 Bargari sacrilege which gravitated him to Sikhi (religion) and the off-staging of Sikh youth — coupled with Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu’s arrest — in the Kisan Morcha (farm protest) controlled by the Left. He seeks to fill the vacuum resulting from the ostensible decline of traditional parties he criticises for breaching promises and creating maladies that have come to dog Punjab. It was at the Sant’s village, Rhode in Moga district on September, 2022 that he gained association with Deep Sidhu’s celebrity by assuming control of Waris Punjab De, an organisation the actor floated before his death in a car crash last year. I’m a Punjabi and a Sikh; every Punjabi is separate from the rest of India. As much as Amritpal may protest the imputations of being a Bhindranwale clone, his stake in the latter’s legacy is hard to miss. You learn many things in later life but you can’t learn the way of worship, the dedication he perfected early in his life.” Singh, in his complaint, alleged that Amritpal’s associates abducted him from Ajnala and took him to an unknown place where he was brutally beaten for criticising the state’s “favourite” new preacher for his radical speeches and spreading false propaganda. In the dress code prescribed for the Khalsa, he is a Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale doppelganger, complete with the gole dastaar (round turban) and the bana (gown).
