For tigers in Nepal, highways are a giant roadblock best avoided (Mongabay.com)

A new study indicates that the presence of roads, and vehicle traffic, in tiger habitats could take a toll on the big cats' behavior and long-term fitness ...

If you want to post a public comment, you can do that at the bottom of the page. According to the study, the female tiger in Bardiya crossed the road frequently during all three periods: before, during, and after the lockdown. However, when the lockdown was enforced, the animal was found to cross the road more frequently at night, and even during the day. “We also need to better understand interactions between tigers and their prey, and try out different mitigation measures to identify the ones that work,” Carter said. Nepal, where tigers are found mostly in Bardiya and the Chitwan-Parsa complex, announced last year that it had They did this to determine the effect of the highway and the lockdown policy on each tiger’s behavior, ability to move through the landscape, cross the road, and select habitats. Although the study only looked at two tigers, the findings are crucial for the tiger population in Nepal, Carter said. For their study, the researchers focused on Nepal’s East-West Highway, which runs through both Bardiya National Park and Parsa National Park, each of which is home to growing tiger populations (125 in Bardiya as of 2022, and 41 in Parsa). This, according to the researchers, reflects differences in highway traffic patterns and regulations as well as ecological conditions in the two parks. The lockdown, and its conclusion, ultimately allowed the researchers to compare any differences in the tigers’ movements in the periods before, during, and after the associated traffic restrictions. The energy used while doing so could come at the expense of other metabolic functions and behaviors, and could have long-term lasting effects on individual fitness, the authors note. A new study underscores just how serious the problem is, showing that road traffic impedes tiger movements within their habitat.

Key left party quits Nepal's fragile ruling coalition: Reports (Aljazeera.com)

The Marxist-Leninist party pulls out of ruling alliance after Maoist PM backs opposition candidate for the presidency.

Political analysts said Prachanda, whose party controls 32 seats in the 275-member parliament, must face a confidence vote within 30 days. The constitution says he would have to seek a vote of confidence within a month to secure the support of the majority of the 275 members in the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of parliament. It is the third party to withdraw from the government since it was formed in December, after no party managed to secure a majority in the November parliamentary elections.

The party’s high-level meeting on Monday decided to back the Prachanda-led government, said Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, deputy Parliamentary Party leader of RSP. This move by Prachanda riled the Oli-led party even further. In the 275-member House, the UML has 79 lawmakers while CPN (Maoist Center) has 32. Prime Minister Prachanda’s party, which contested the November 20 parliamentary and provincial elections as a partner of the five-party alliance led by the Nepali Congress, left the alliance after it refused to give Prachanda any of the two key posts — the president or the prime minister. As Prime Minister Prachanda violated the December 25 agreement while forming the seven-party coalition government and betrayed the Communist Party of Nepal-(Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML), the party took the decision to leave the government, Rijal said. The prime reason for the break-up of the alliance between Prachanda and former prime minister Oli was because the Maoist leader decided to support senior Nepali Congress (NC) candidate Ram Chandra Paudel for the President’s post.

Indian neighbourhood in crisis as Nepal faces political turmoil yet ... (Hindustan Times)

Barring hermit kingdom of Bhutan and Sheikh Hasina-ruled Bangladesh, India's neighbourhood is singed with political and economic turmoil, with countries ...

Another thorn in the flesh is that Pakistan is accusing the Taliban of supporting Tehreek-e-Taliban, Pakistan terror group to target Army and security forces in the Islamic Republic. Surrounded by neighbours in serious political and economic turmoil, India must ensure that Bangladesh does not get dragged into a similar situation as the state is headed towards a general election in January 2024. The Islamic Republic is having a running battle with the Taliban rulers of Afghanistan over the Durand Line as international border and is promoting terror groups opposed to the ruling Sunni Pashtun force. The situation in Pakistan is equally worst as the Islamic Republic is rocked by food and fuel shortages, terror attacks and political turmoil with virtually all parties failing to deliver on governance. Even though India gave some USD four billion as bilateral aid to Sri Lanka since 2021 to tide over the deepening economic crisis in the island nation, the current political turmoil has ensured that a sole member of Parliament from a party is the President of the country, with others either totally discredited like the Rajapaksas or afraid to face the wrath of the common public. The other game played in Kathmandu is playing India against China and getting economic or infrastructure aid in return.

With CPN-UML withdrawing its support, the incumbent government formed in late December last year has lost its majority.

In such a condition, the Prime Minister would require to take a vote of confidence within 30 days. Further he said, “Prime Minister blocked the scheduled visit of the Foreign Minister to Switzerland. Prachanda has also cancelled his scheduled visit to Qatar, his first foreign visit since assuming office in December last year. Paudya who is from UML was leading a five-member delegation including a secretary from the prime minister’s office, foreign ministry officials and former minister Govinda Bandi as an expert.
