The Mandalorian season 3 premiere has heart — and some ... (Radio Times)

The Mandalorian season 3 episode 1 has been released on Disney Plus, with Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin and Grogu returning. Here's what we thought.

For more from the biggest stars in TV, listen to [The Radio Times Podcast](https://www.radiotimes.com/audio/podcasts/). [Disney Plus](http://www.radiotimes.com/disneyplus) on Wednesday 1st March — [sign up to Disney Plus now for £79.90 for a year or £7.99 a month](https://disneyplus.bn5x.net/c/1236178/564546/9358?subId1=radiotimes-1793520&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.disneyplus.com%2Fen-gb). She does offer Djarin some directions to the Living Waters on Mandalore - but not before calling him a "fool" and telling him there's "nothing left" of Mandalore. Plus, Favreau recently made it clear that he has no idea how the story will end — a situation that can often lead to meandering plots and shows that go on for simply too long. Check out more of our [Sci-Fi](https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/sci-fi/) coverage or visit our [TV Guide](https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/tv-listings/) and [Streaming Guide](https://www.radiotimes.com/streaming-guide/) to find out what's on. She's more than a little lost after Djarin won the Dark Saber from her in season 2. The only problem is that IG-11 sacrificed himself way back in season 1 - but some of his parts have been recovered. Her forces have left her and, really, it's just quite a sad sight. This is a modal window. "He was sent off to a New Republic war tribunal." Not everyone's happy about it though, as pirate Vane proves when he and his gang of brothers cause trouble for Karga. Someone else that surely won't come back to haunt our heroes, right?

The Mandalorian season 3 episode 1 review: a breezy set-up for ... (Space.com)

The Mandalorian season 3 kicks off with 'The Apostate', a relaxed but fun episode full of familiar faces that sets up the next steps in Din Djarin and ...

With the pirates out of the way (for now), Din states he’s come back to try to resurrect IG-11 in order to get some extra help on Mandalore. Seeing Din trying to understand the Anzellans’ broken Basic (English in the Star Wars universe) while uncomfortably sitting inside the cramped space is exactly the kind of zany Star Wars imagery we’ve come to expect from The Mandalorian. The final scene of the episode sees Din and Grogu visiting a Mandalorian castle on Kalevala, another planet (seemingly untouched and peaceful) in the Mandalorian system. Only its upper torso appears to have survived the explosion, but it’s now part of a statue that reminds the town’s citizens of their atypical hero. After some back-and-forth, a showdown ensues – The Mandalorian likes to remind viewers it’s a Western at its core – and everyone but Vane falls dead to the ground. Moreover, there’s a construction boom, and Greef Karga promptly offers Din and the Child the chance to settle down and live off the land. Despite what legend and Mandalorian pessimism says, the planet isn’t poisoned nor completely uninhabitable, and some scavengers are even making a profit out of stuff and minerals they find on the planet with little trouble. Amidst all the chaos and confusion, he risks his life to save the kid from getting devoured before Din Djarin saves the day with a plasma torpedo from his shiny new It seems like the Armorer knew Din wouldn’t be able to redeem himself, since Mandalore was off-limits according to them, but that wasn’t made clear at all in Chapter 5 of The Book of Boba Fett. As a result, the apostate Mandalorian has at the very least earned an audience with the Armorer. But it’s not your average “mission of the week” episode, as the (roughly) 30-minute runtime provides more than enough space for visiting several locations and meeting a handful of major characters. Things get off to an unexpected but rocky start as we witness a Mandalorian initiation ceremony that is interrupted by a giant gator-turtle-like creature.

'The Mandalorian' Season Three Gets Off to a Disappointing Start (Rolling Stone)

The premiere falls victim to the Star Wars shared universe and 'Book of Boba Fett,' while still obscuring Pedro Pascal's wonderfully expressive face.

Favreau seems to be signaling that he values the cool visual of the helmet more than he does the value of letting one of [the most expressive actors](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-recaps/the-last-of-us-episode-6-recap-pedro-pascal-powerhouse-joel-ellie-threat-rutina-wesley-1234678616/) working in television today use his greatest weapon. (*) In “The Return of the Mandalorian,” the Watch was basically down to the Armorer and Paz Vizsla. Perhaps the arc of this season will be Din recognizing that some of the Watch’s rules are bad, in the same way that Ahsoka eventually recognized the dangers of the Jedi rules against emotional attachments. “The Return of the Mandalorian” and everything that’s happened since has walked all of that back. [Breaking Bad-ish scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKMdzJFcyro)) where the malfunctioning, legless IG-11 crawls around the floor with his one remaining arm to try to kill Grogu. Meanwhile, hilariously, the one Book of Boba element that does get re-explained is the part about Mando’s banishment and path to atonement, which is already in the opening montage. First he needs to get IG-11 fixed, because he needs a droid to help him go to Mandalore, and this is somehow the only one he trusts, even as we saw in both Season Two and especially in “The Return of the Mandalorian” that he has largely gotten over his fear of droids. [The Mandalorian](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-recaps/mandalorian-season-2-finale-rescue-recap-1105641/) Season Three. So he has to travel the galaxy to find a replacement memory circuit, and only then can he go back to Mandalore to see if it’s even safe to visit. And I imagine any Mandalorian-only viewers were baffled by a lot of “The Apostate.” Mando and Grogu are reunited and Mando has a sleek new ship, neither of which are explained. So we are reminded of IG-11’s sacrifice [in the Season One finale](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-recaps/mandalorian-season-finale-recap-redemption-931455/), Greef Karga discussing the gentrification of Nevarro, and the purge of Mandalore. We do not see a single frame of footage featuring Luke Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, or Grogu, even though Mandalorian Season Two ended with Mando and the little guy saying goodbye, seemingly forever, and even though

Mando and Baby Yoda are back in this thrillingly weird western where the gifts just keep on coming, from the wild beasts to the Taika Waititi cameos.

In the past, it’s even made use of the classic shot of a man in black approaching the saloon in a dusty one-horse town, filmed through the legs of the sheriff standing his ground out front. After that’s over, Din Djarin and Grogu set out for Mandalore on a quest for redemption, and if that’s barely got started yet, it’s still a thrill and a pleasure to see them back on their way. Karga informs his visitor that their ally Cara Dune has got a new job and is no longer around, thus solving the mystery of how the actor who played Dune, ” montage at the start of the new Mandalorian episode, so for some viewers it’s a double surprise when Mando arrives in a sleek retro set of wings, with Grogu peeping out of a glass dome behind him as his tiny co-pilot, like R2-D2 back in the day. Our man acquired a reconditioned Naboo starfighter, fought to retain his frighteningly powerful new weapon the darksaber, and was reunited with his regular travelling companion Grogu (to devotees of the show, “Baby Yoda”) when the adorable little furball sacked off his Jedi training with Luke Skywalker and chose to ride shotgun with Mando instead. 'The Mandalorian' Review: Star Wars Series Returns in Fine Form (Hollywood Reporter)

Disney+'s 'The Mandalorian' season 3 brings back Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin and Grogu (aka Baby Yoda) for a new quest that sends the pair to Mandalore.

Now, having fulfilled his task of delivering Grogu to the Jedi only for Grogu to choose Din instead, Din is free to more fully embrace his parental role. (Marvel could stand to borrow a page from Star Wars on that front, just saying.) There’s the wealth of indelible personalities surrounding our central duo — including Amy Sedaris’ delightfully quirky Peli Motto, back to run more fast-talking scams. In large part, The Mandalorian gets to revert to form because The Book of Boba Fett did the heavy lifting of getting Grogu and Din back on track, over two and a half episodes that were essentially just mislabeled episodes of The Mandalorian. Likewise, Bo-Katan (Katee Sackoff) spends most of the first episode getting us up to speed on what her deal is, though she thankfully gets more opportunities to show off her charismatic, confident personality in the second. In itself, the promise of more lore isn’t especially enticing. The Armorer (Emily Swallow) returns mainly so Din can rehash the conversation he had with her in The Book of Boba Fett, and remind us again what his updated plot is. The premiere (written by Jon Favreau and directed by Rick Famuyiwa) offers no shortage of delights to satisfy casual viewers: a daring rescue from an enormous sea creature; a high-speed chase through an asteroid belt; the return of Ludwig Göransson’s thrilling score; many, many moments of Grogu adorably getting up to no good. One notable change to The Mandalorian that seems to have stuck is a more serialized nature. But even at a relatively trim 35 minutes, the episode feels bogged down by references to earlier episodes and setup for later ones. The mild surprise of season three, then, is how little actually seems to have changed. For one thing, it separated Din Djarin ( [Pedro Pascal](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/t/pedro-pascal-2/)) and Grogu with no obvious way to bring them back together. [The Mandalorian](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/t/mandalorian/), it was perhaps the biggest bombshell the series had ever dropped.

The Mandalorian Season-Premiere Recap: This Is the Way (Again) (Vulture)

The episode opens with The Armorer (Emily Swallow) methodically forging a new helmet, a process that, from all appearances, seems to be unchanged since time ...

Is Bo-Katan right about the Children of the Watch contributing to the decline and fall of Mandalore? Even if “The Apostate” is mostly about what’s to come (with some summing up of what happened between seasons), it still offers plenty of reasons to keep following Din and Grogu’s journey. Din outmaneuvers his opponents using some nearby asteroids for cover only to wind up in the guns of the hulking vessel of Pirate King Gorian Shard (Nonso Anozie), an intimidating (if mossy-looking) villain who really does not like Din (and likes Din even less after he escapes his clutches). “Your cult gave up on Mandalore long before the Purge,” she tells Din, and the planet is “ravaged, plundered, and poisoned beyond repair.” But Din isn’t prepared to despair. The streets are filled with merchants (and a vegetable-chopping droid), musicians, and creatures of all races, including a Mon Calamari and some Kowakian cousins of Salacious Crumb. Nevarro, he wants them to know, is “no longer friendly to pirates.” When the other pirates don’t get the message, Karga and Din take them out. The Armorer takes a moment before replying, “This is the way.” And with that, the premise of The Mandalorian’s third season has been established. With the gator (and the opening titles) out of the way, Din catches up with the Armorer, who’s not mad, but she is disappointed. To Karga, it’s nonsense Din can ignore and live the good life with Grogu by his side. In the meantime, we got [The Book of Boba Fett](https://www.vulture.com/tv/the-book-of-boba-fett/), a series that was only tangentially related to The Mandalorian apart from a stretch of episodes that were absolutely crucial to the story of The Mandalorian. Could this be the end of the Children of the Watch? Helmet forged, she emerges from a cave to join the others on a lakeside beach in the middle of an otherwise desolate landscape, where she prepares, with great pomp and ceremony complete with drums and banners, to bestow the helmet on a somber-looking dark-haired kid.

Why Is Grogu Back With The Mandalorian? You Missed Something ... (Forbes)

After all, The Mandalorian season 2 ended with the apparent end of Mando's quest, turning over Grogu to none other than Luke Skywalker for Jedi training. But ...

Jon Favreau has said he wants the adventures of Mando and Grogu to essentially continue on indefinitely and he has no set end goal for them in mind. Now we are talking about redemption, the throne of Mandalore, Grogu’s people, a lot of stuff. The Mando episodes were naturally the best part of it. Mando and Grogu help Boba Fett after the mess he’s gotten himself on Tatooine. But they are more or less essential viewing, or at least essential knowledge, for this new season. While the show may do a “previously on” segment (that many skip) or a brief overview, it comes down to the fact that they essentially made The Book of Boba Fett essential viewing for The Mandalorian because they devoted two full episodes to just continuing Mando and Grogu’s story as a really, absurdly important interlude between seasons 2 and 3 here.

But to leave the planet, Din and Grogu have to evade a band of pirates. So, at the end of this chapter, this is where we leave the Mandalorian: standing before someone who has been both an ally and an enemy, and asking for help. But to help him survive the potentially hostile planet, he needs the help of the assassin droid IG-11, which sacrificed itself to save him and his cohorts back in Season 1. When those pirates show up and start making demands, Din lends his gun to a Wild West-style shootout in the streets. Our heroes’ final stop this week is on Kalevala, a planet near Mandalore, where they find a near-empty castle and an embittered acquaintance: Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), the fallen Mandalorian political leader. Favreau and the director Rick Famuyiwa begin this new season with a scene in which a Mandalorian boy receives his first helmet from the Armorer (Emily Swallow), and is asked to make his pledge never to remove it. This has been a point in this show’s favor from the beginning. Din tells the Armorer that he believes enough of Mandalore still stands for him to perform the necessary rituals and cleanse himself. If, on the other hand, you also watched the spinoff series “ [The Book of Boba Fett](https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/07/arts/television/the-mandalorian-boba-fett-temuera-morrison.html),” you know that in its last few episodes, Din and Grogu reunited to help their pals on Tatooine take down a vicious criminal gang. That is when our heroes come speeding in from outer space in their N-1, to save the day. Given that it has been a while since the last real “Mandalorian” episode, Favreau shows an impressive amount of restraint in keeping this premiere relatively short. Most of Mandalore has been rendered uninhabitable by years of civil war and the death throes of the Empire.

The Mandalorian season 3 premiere: New quests and not a lot of thrills (The A.V. Club)

The Disney Plus show is back, serving up a pretty slick space battle but lacking any real urgency.

- Something I was curious about going into this episode was whether or not we’d see some reason why Din Djarin’s story had to take up so much time in Boba Fett rather than saving it for the real show, and I don’t think there’s a satisfactory answer. None of this was extremely thrilling, and there’s no one exciting thing that sets up the rest of the season as a must-see Star Wars adventure, but The Mandalorian has always been fairly good at surprises. With repairing IG-11 requiring more work than he expected, Din Djarin decides to reunite with another member of his merry band on the way and visits Bo-Katan. After refusing Karga’s offer to settle down and live off the land (Grogu, meanwhile, can’t stop spinning himself around in a chair, and he later uses the Force to steal some of Karga’s space-Skittles), Din and Karga go deal with some pirates who are hassling a droid at one of Nevarro’s many good schools. Karga and Din execute the pirates, leaving one alive so he can go tell their boss that Nevarro is a good place and that bad people aren’t welcome (the only surprising thing about the fact that this doesn’t work is that it only takes 10 minutes or so before everyone realizes just how much it didn’t work). The problem is that Mandalore was obliterated by the Empire (not literally, thankfully), but it’s apparently so inhospitable that everyone says it’s cursed and the Mandalorians—especially those in Din Djarin’s “cult,” the Children Of The Watch—refuse to return. Anyway, Din Djarin immediately takes on the sidequest of getting a new memory circuit for IG-11, because god forbid he gets to the proverbial fireworks factory with any kind of urgency. I said they’d come back!) The space battle is pretty slick, showing Din Djarin’s new ship in action, and the way he keep popping out of nowhere to smoke these jerks is cool, but it’s all a trick to lead him right to the main ship of Pirate King Gorian Shard, who turns out to be a Swamp Thing. The Mandalorian: Dave Filoni on Grogu's Future in Star Wars (Hollywood Reporter)

The Mandalorian's Dave Filoni talks season 3, learning to direct live-action, and where Grogu might be in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

He’s a great person to work with, and he weaves a great tale. Writing and directing and collaborating on this type of thing with so many people is just the top of the mountain for me at this point. Even the technologies we are using are things he would talk about, and so I just like to tell people that I was very well prepared. From the first episode of Mando to “The Jedi” with Rosario Dawson, there was a tremendous difference, and I credit that to Jon [Favreau], who’s a great mentor and friend. There are many different people that could wield the force, and maybe Luke is the last Jedi as far as what Yoda would consider a Jedi. My mind was well prepared by him to face the challenges that you face day to day on a set, telling a story. So, pressure, no pressure, there’s always going to be pressure because we’re dealing with something that so many people care about in Star Wars, and it’s a real privilege just to get to be a part of it. The Helmet Stays On: 'The Mandalorian' Nails the Subtle Art of ... (Collider.com)

The Mandalorian faces a unique challenge in that its main character almost never shows his face, but Pedro Pascal and co. pull it off seamlessly.

The Mandalorian proves that wearing a mask when it suits the story can build a strong dramatic narrative and inform real collaborative performances from multiple actors, each of which brings something unique to the character. The last look Mando casts over the village in the end of the episode is equally telling, despite the audience being given as little as the direction of the T-visor. While the voice performance does belong to one and only Pedro Pascal (recorded in post-production), when it comes to the physical representation of our hero, the armored figure we see on screen is performed by three people — Pascal and his body doubles, Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder. Taking the helmet off only in the most dramatically intense scenes creates a natural emphasis and an incredible emotional payoff: being that sharing an intimate bonding moment with his son Grogu before giving him away to Luke Skywalker or giving up resistance and revealing his face in front of the droid he once felt contempt and prejudice towards — the helmet is not only the cornerstone of the hero's identity, but also a powerful tool to mark key moments in the character's arc. Instead of seeing sadness or hesitation in the character's face, the audience has to rely on other channels — the body language in this case — to perceive the drama. While some movies are able to make a reasonable compromise by showing an internal view of the helmet, so the audience can check in on the character (think Tony Stark in Iron Man), others feel the necessity

'The Mandalorian' Season 3: What Happened to Gina Carano's Cara ... (Collider.com)

Where did Nevarro's marshal go? The Mandalorian Season 3 premiere explains why Gina Carano's Cara Dune is gone!

[spinoff, Rangers of the New Republic](https://collider.com/gina-carano-the-mandalorian-spinoff-cancelled-reasons-why/), which would have starred Dune. But there is still [hope for the character](https://collider.com/the-mandalorian-cara-dune-controversy-recast-gina-carano-fired/). When this was announced, LucasFilm made it clear that she will no longer be in The Mandalorian, nor do they have plans to work with her in the future. While Cara Dune was effectively written out of The Mandalorian, they managed to give her character a happy ending. Later she officially joined the government and became a New Republic Marshal and a ranger of the New Republic. Now a special forces agent, Dune is busy somewhere in the galaxy and isn't likely to get a break anytime soon. A LucasFilm spokesperson called her statements "abhorrent and unacceptable" and officially said that she was no longer an employee of the studio. It wasn't particularly notable as her character had no reason to be involved in that part of the story. He offers Din a home on Nevarro and the role of marshal, which was once Dune's. [story continued in The Book of Boba Fett](https://collider.com/book-of-boba-fett-episode-5-review-mandalorian-pedro-pascal-disney-plus/), Dune wasn't mentioned. The Season 3 premiere shows that executive producer Jon Favreau and his team chose to deal with Dune's absence differently. [The Mandalorian](http://www.collider.com/tag/the-mandalorian) Season 3 is out, but not all the show's characters have returned.

All the 'Star Wars' lore in 'The Mandalorian' Season 3, explained (Los Angeles Times)

Season 3 features protective space dad Mando (Pedro Pascal) and adorable Grogu (Baby Yoda) on yet another journey steeped in "Star Wars" allusions.

They appear to have a connection to the Death Watch, a Mandalorian terrorist group introduced in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” Perhaps Season 3 of “The Mandalorian” will finally reveal what happened between [Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff)](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2020-11-27/star-wars-the-mandalorian-katee-sackhoff-bo-katan-dave-filoni) leading the Mandalorians against the Galactic Empire in “Rebels” and her [first appearance](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2020-11-13/mandalorian-star-wars-bo-katan-kryze) in “The Mandalorian.” Purrgils were first introduced in “Star Wars Rebels,” where a certain Jedi padawan was able to forge a connection with them using the Force. [Mandalorian and “Star Wars” lore](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2020-10-29/the-mandalorian-star-wars-clone-wars-rebels-history). “The Mandalorian” has proved that blaster shootouts and the antics of a hungry cute toddler remain entertaining. One of “Andor’s” strengths was in showing how ordinary people live under Imperial rule when powerful space wizards or honor-bound warriors are not around to save the day.

In a world of peak TV and limitless series offerings, The Mandalorian continues to soar and provide one of the most necessary storytelling experiences - true blue escapism at its finest. This second chapter also took me back in time, to when I first discovered the wonders of this show. It was here that my faith was restored and I have instantly reminded of what the show excels at - good, old-fashioned Star Wars space fights and awww-inducing fuzzy creatures. That random episode of an altogether different show served as a pivotal continuation of the Mando-Grogu story in which Luke made Grogu choose whether he wanted to pursue the Jedi way or return to foster daddy (played by the internet’s daddy) Mando. But it’s almost as if the makers knew they were onto a major dud, and thus decided that the penultimate episode of that show should ignore Boba Fett’s dull story entirely and randomly switch focus to Mando. But before we dive into what the first two episodes of the long-awaited third season have in store for us, let us take a moment to look back at what came before.

If there’s any justice in the universe Gorian will find a new way to show up in a few more episodes of the show, failing completely to capture or fight Mando every single time. So it’s only fitting that Mando may now have his own version of that in Gorian Shard. I was provided with the first two episodes of the season and enjoyed both. Weak plotting aside, the production quality is stratospheric, and everything feels cinematic. The Mandalorian season 3 review: Initially sceptical, I surrendered before the charms of The Mandalorian over time. During the events of The Book of Boba Fett, another live-action show set in the Star Wars universe, Djarin and Grogu were reunited again when the child chose to follow the ways of Mandalorians rather than the Jedi. Despite its Western genre trappings, the show's production quality feels cinematic, and Pascal's performance as Djarin remains compelling.
