Gulmohar Movie Review: Sharmila Tagore's comeback film is a win ... (India Today)

The film stars Sharmila Tagore, Manoj Bajpayee, Simran, Suraj Sharma and Amol Palekar. It is directed by Rahul Chittella. Rating: Release Date ...

The music of the film, composed by Siddhartha Khosla and Alan Demoss, is soothing. Their portrayal of a matured couple who have gone through the various ups and downs in life is perfect to the T. And, not to forget, a certain twist in the tale. The sense of displacement is often quite painful. With stars like Sharmila Tagore, Manoj Bajpayee, Amol Palekar, the film is already a winner, says our review. It revolves around the Batra family as they are ready to move out of their 34-year-old family home.

'Gulmohar' movie review: Manoj Bajpayee's family drama looks ... (The Hindu)

The film is driven by identifiable characters and well-crafted performances by Manoj Bajpayee, Sharmila Tagore, and Amol Palekar.

The positioning of a same-sex relationship and an inter-faith bond blossoming in the Gulmohar villa is not intricately woven into the story and remains only adsorbed on the surface. Manoj Bajpayee has an innate ability to open up the inner recesses of the mind and heart of the character on screen. Suraj Sharma doesn’t have much to do as the son of Arun who wants to ‘start up’ in life on his own terms but can’t exactly spell them out. The dimples are intact and so is the grace. The house shift becomes an opportunity to clear the cobwebs in the relationships. The postcards of memories are riddled with cryptic messages on the destiny that director and co-writer Rahul V Chittella pass on to us.

Gulmohar movie review: What gives the story of a dysfunctional family, with their secrets, a refreshing touch is the presence of stalwarts like Sharmila ...

Yet, the sub-plots, revolving around some of the supporting characters, slow down the narrative, especially in the second half. Most of the action takes place in the villa, giving a glimpse of the interiors of a typical [Delhi](https://indianexpress.com/section/cities/delhi/) bungalow and those who inhabit it. Who better than Tagore to essay the role of Kusum, who makes her own choices, doesn’t kowtow to social expectations, wants to get rid of family responsibilities, and likes to savour a glass of brandy at family gatherings. It is not surprising that Bajpayee as Aroon drives the engrossing family drama with his riveting performance of a man in his 50s. [Gulmohar](https://indianexpress.com/article/entertainment/bollywood/sharmila-tagore-cries-profusely-gulmohar-screening-young-generation-makes-it-so-difficult-8469300/) tries to find an answer to this just when the Batra family is moving out of their plush Delhi bungalow, which is going to be knocked down to make way for a high-rise. These issues eventually come to the surface, forcing the family in transition to confront them.

Gulmohar Movie Review: Manoj Bajpayee & Sharmila Tagore Lead ... (koimoi)

Star Cast: Manoj Bajpayee, Sharmila Tagore, Simran, Amol Palekar, Suraj Sharma, Kaveri Seth, Utsavi Jha, Chandan Roy, Jatin Goswami, Gandharv Dewan, and ...

Siddhartha Khosla, widely known for his impeccable work in the precious gift of God of a show This Is Us with Alan Demoss compose a soundtrack so unique and perfect that it adds much more to the entire product. There is representation of every voice in a joint structure, one that holds the power, one that witnesses silently, one that is vocal, and one that is oppressed. There is a dig at the class divide, class divide, and even orthodox thinking that is still evident in some. Yes, there is a room for much more catharsis and deep diving into these complex stories but that doesn’t make this experience any bitter. Sharmila Tagore returns to our screens post more than a decade and it is such a bliss to see her spread her regal magic all over again. While she at the service of this entire family, she also rebels in her murmurs. He is man who is yet to accept Gurgaon as Gurugram, so the change in homes is much bigger for him. There is so much heart in the minute details added to the writing. The packing and moving out brings out a neatly buried secret that shakes the core of this tree. The presence of stairs in the house is the parameter of success, the father in his young days told his son who is now the head of the family. But is a family always one that is bonded by blood? The grammar of a family anywhere on the planet is similar.

His dialogues are possibly the best and his character, the most layered. The scenes between Kusum and her granddaughter Amrita, where Kusum talks about her early days, marriage, and motherhood are so endearing. Bajpayee, as someone who balances the duties of a son, husband and father while finding traces of his own reality, is moving. Having said that, the film beautifully explores the father-son conflict (Bajpayee and Sharma), mother-son equation (Tagore and Bajpayee), grandma- granddaughter bond (Tagore and Utsavi Jha). The elegance and poise she exudes are remarkable. But beyond a point, the narrative becomes a bit convoluted. At 132 minutes, the film needed much better editing. The film follows the family's last four days together, before they move out of their 32-year-old ancestral home. Her son, Arun ( [Manoj Bajpayee](https://www.hindustantimes.com/topic/manoj-bajpayee)), is left bewildered. Gulmohar is interesting, but the trailer might have shown way more than what was required. Family sagas that are high on emotions and portray generational gaps in the most relatable manner have long been enjoyed by movie buffs. Director Rahul V Chittella's Gulmohar creates a world where three generations of Batras are living together, celebrating and being a part of each other's ups and downs.

A will written by Kusum’s (Sharmila Tagore) husband and Arun’s (Manoj Bajpayee) father brings about the many untold secrets of the family. This shift from ancestral home is like a re-discovery of the bonds that have held them together as a family with personal secrets and insecurities. There is a reason behind each of the decisions taken by the eldest member of the family Kusum (Sharmila Tagore). The selling of the family house brings to light many unspoken hidden secrets of the family. Gulmohar revolves around the multi-generation Batra family who are all set to move out of their 34-year-old family home Gulmohar and how this move brings about the vulnerabilities of each and every character. The craft of Manoj Bajpayee is natural to the core. One realises that there are so many memories attached to ancestral houses and that each corner of a house has a story. A movie that many can relate to where all sprawling bungalows are getting converted into high-rise apartments and when you leave your ancestral house it is like wrapping your memories in your heart. The best performances are no doubt of Shot in the beautiful Delhi house of film director

Gulmohar Review: Home Is Where The Heart Is (Rediffmail)

Delhi, daddy issues, drivers, domestic help, politics, patriarchy, sexuality, sexism, choices, compromises, community, religion, real estate, motherhood, ...

Ghazal singer Talat Aziz pops up for a scene or two and regales the Batras and us with his voice and verve. Any other actor would turned him into a caricature on the ideology of hate, Palekar internalises it and demonstrates twice the danger. It's like she never took a break and makes Kusum so personable and profound without the slightest strain. Although the twist leading to this insight is questionably crafted and insists a will's beneficiaries can be its witnesses too. Arun hero-worships his late father, which goes completely unnoticed by his paternal uncle Sudhakar (Amol Palekar) a quintessential Delhi dinosaur, the kind of disgruntled toxic oldie WhatsApp groups are split over and ruins any discourse no soon he opens his big bigoted mouth or refuses to drink water from the hands of Batra's Muslim maid. Conflict is as fundamental to human nature as living and director Rahul V Chitella captures it so precisely in his directorial debut Gulmohar, you may well think of it as life itself.
