The catharsis in this three act film is well-worth a watch and for that reason 'Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar' can be seen as a family entertainer despite its many problems and pseudo-feminism. The last 30 minutes of the film cover up for an entire 1 hour wasted in the first half which was all about 'establishing people, places and their roles'. The two are seen in small scenes which do some amount of interesting meta-referencing to 'Pyaar Ka Punchnama' and 'Ralia'. As an actor, he seems to relish his part, which is quite dominating and subsumes all other characters, even to the extent of his lead heroine, Shraddha's role in it. The best part of the second half is the cameo by Nushrratt Bharuccha and Kartik Aaryan. The post-interval film has a slightly realistic angle and thus a more entertaining and engaging beat to it. He is made to go through loyalty tests that involve two tasteless Luv-verse cameos – one where a male character is paid to feel Nisha up in public, and the other where a female character is paid to seduce Rohan in private. In a normal universe, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar might have been yet another Luv Ranjan movie about love in the time of incels. Because the fact of the matter is that it’s Rohan who always manages to be the victim. From the way it unfolds, the screenplay believes that Nisha is the damaged one; that she is the one missing out. In the pink corner lies Rohan’s courage to go from cold Casanova to heartbreaking martyr, and his pride of being a Momma’s Boy. It’s like the film is mocking the preconceived notions of both the girl and the audience – first by staging a harmless bromance, then by staging a hidden chauvinist. If anything, this is him reacting to the criticism – that is, the (correct) accusations of casual misogyny bubble-wrapped in crowd-pleasing comedy – of his previous movies. Her Nisha in this film is so nice that, rather than force poor Rohan (Ranbir Kapoor) to choose between his family and her, she attempts to do the nobler thing: Gaslight him into believing he’s the issue. But here, the conflict is centered on the woman’s inability to be cruel and manipulative; she is too evolved to be the quintessential Luv Ranjan heroine. The production values are splendid, and the songs are shot in a lavish manner. A relevant topic in society is told in an entertaining manner, and the output was good as the film has talented artists like Ranbir and Shraddha Kapoor. On the whole, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar is an enjoyable rom-com that also has a fine amount of emotions. The entire Spain portion is very boring, and the narrative in this particular episode is not at all appealing. There is a reason why Ranbir is hailed as the actor best suited for rom-coms among current generation heroes, and Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar is just a testament to it. Pritam’s songs are superb and make one vibe to the movie. She competed with Ranbir in terms of performance and dance moves, and the lead pair shared a cracking chemistry. There is a surprise package in the movie that will entertain and surprise the audience. These two elements are nicely balanced in the second half, and the film runs on a faster note in this hour. Every song is beautifully composed, and these songs just enhance the range of the film. The movie stays true to its genre, and at the same time, a neat family emotion runs in the background. Misogynistic, sexist lines, a Luv Ranjan film staple, keep popping up: what’s a maleverse without dashes of sexism and misogyny?A little girl is handed out some deeply problematic lines, and placed in even more problematic situations. Her attempt at trying to be her own person, and striking out for independence is firmly scotched by the film’s decisive pivot to conservative family values: remember we told you right up front that she will learn the error of her ways?
