Caught in a situation where she doesn’t know what dangers the family faces and what exactly Rana is up to, her anger is not out of place. When he opens up about his guilt of not saying a firm no to his abuser as a child, Suparn and Karan use the plot point to emphasise that a victim does not have to wallow in guilt. For the most part, he is required to appear brooding but the series gives him the occasional window to portray the agony of a man who desperately wants to keep his family afloat. The first two episodes work as character introductions to the members of the Rana Naidu family — his wife Naina (Surveen Chawla), a former actress in Telugu cinema before she married Rana and moved to Mumbai, and their children Ani (Madhav Dhingra) and Nitya (Afrah Sayed). Rana Naidu, Karan Anshuman and Suparn Varma’s Indian adaptation of the American series Ray Donovan, is a dark crime and family drama replete with sex, nudity and foul language. For all that cleaning up act he does for others, Rana’s own life is a mess with scars from the past.

The writing is quite weak, and there is not enough drama to elevate the proceedings. There isn’t enough meat in the story, and hence the series doesn’t give enough scope for the other artists to go all out. But in Rana Naidu, the skin show and cuss words are used way more than the requirement, irritating the viewers. There are absolutely no high moments in the show, and the presentation is very flat. The series picks up momentum only in the last few episodes, but it is too late by then as the viewer loses interest. As the title suggests, Rana gets the lion’s share of the screen time, and the actor is at his absolute best in the show. But unfortunately, the series is boring for the most part, and the directors failed to write an engaging narrative despite having the best actors by their side. But the series didn’t live up to the hype completely and fell short of the gigantic expectations. Venkatesh is best known for his endearing family dramas, and the audience will be shocked to witness Venky playing a character with grey shades and mouthing foul language. The expectations are obvious when a star actor like Venkatesh is making his digital debut. The character Jaffa played by Abhishek Banerjee, the promising Bollywood actor, is written well, and the actor gave a superior performance. Co-starring Rana Daggubati, the show is the Indian adaptation of the American television series Ray Donovan.

The dialogue (by Vaibhav Vishal), a string of slurs and slang, is piercing and painful. No one has a straight conversation and a large neat drink is the default solution for all occasions. As a husband, Rana is exasperating and insensitive. He repeatedly de-prioritises his family and disrespects his wife Naina (Surveen Chawla), a former actress. Rana covers up the misdeeds and cleans up the mess of his high-rolling clients – politicians, movie stars, cricketers, musicians. Bags of money are passed around ad nauseum and guns are fired without a second thought.
