'In India we can't protect such players...': R Ashwin's blunt observation (Hindustan Times)

Ravichandran Ashwin was all praise for the Australian batters after the visitors kept India out on the field in Ahmedabad for nearly two full days.

He then hunkered down with Khawaja and ensured that India have a wicketless first two sessions on Day 2. While all three previous matches of the series suited spinners and got over within two and a half days, Australia kept India out on the field for a better part of the first two days in the fourth Test in Ahmedabad. Ashwin then observed that countries like England and Australia do a better job at protecting a player like Green. Both players scored centuries, their first against India, while it was a first in Test cricket overall for 23-year-old all-rounder Cameron Green. "I think he is a fantastic player. [India ](https://www.hindustantimes.com/topic/indian-cricket-team)and Australia has been a hard grind for the bowlers, for a change.

IND vs AUS: With mystique release, Ravichandran Ashwin spins his ... (The Indian Express)

Bowling with a new load-up in the series, off-spinner uses his guile to pick up 6 wickets.

That was the idea of it.Pace of the pitch allowed the batsmen to play a lot more off the back foot.” “Working out what he is trying to do is probably the biggest (challenge) and how is he trying to get you out, what fields are in play – the mental side is the biggest thing as a batsman.” For a large chunk of 611 minutes, Khawaja had thwarted Ashwin with a very efficient technique, taking care to get his front leg out of the way, playing with full bat-face, pressing back whenever in doubt, but Ashwin can still confidently walk out of the battle, feeling he had done whatever he could against him on this flat track. [Ahmedabad](https://indianexpress.com/section/cities/ahmedabad/) pitch allowed the Aussies to sit back and play him off the pitch. Ashwin’s mystique doesn’t necessarily lie in what comes out of his hands – he isn’t a mystery spinner, but the way he preps up his release, he cuts the reaction time of the batsmen. “The batsmen have to watch his hands closely which gives them less time to move and they sort of stay in the crease a bit. His deliveries are constructed for what a batsman might do, tailored to probe the anticipated response, as opposed to a pre-fabricated line of thought. It would have been understandable if he was a wrist spinner with inherent ability to spin and loop the ball a lot more, or of course a skillful fast bowler with the added luxury of cheap tailenders’ wickets. I wanted to see if I can get a bit more purchase off the wicket as the wrist cock of can get the seam different.” (The change in load-up) was to try to get the batsmen to miss the pace of it, or the trajectory of it . “It’s doing a lot more in the air than it did in Bangladesh,” he said after his 6 for 91 spell. Whenever I bowl with that action trajectory is different, you tend to go back to the ball that is a bit fuller.

Feels good to end day with 'bag' of wickets: Ravichandran Ashwin (The Tribune)

Little tweaks in technique after an underwhelming tour of Bangladesh has worked wonders for Ravichandran Ashwin, who will go to bed “feeling a lot better” ...

“This is a game of second innings but we have to bat well and probably see some of our top-order batters get a big score,” he said. I expect the pitch to be nice and hard and probably break as the game goes on which I hope is not for the next five sessions. And I felt at various stages in this particular series, be it in New Delhi, the numbers probably don’t give you a five or six but the ball is coming out beautifully.” “It does feel good as you end up with a good bag of wickets. This is a game of second innings but we have to bat well and probably see some of our top-order batters get a big score. I will go to bed tonight a bit early and a bit happier...

Put on a lot of revs on the ball, and just spin it harder if things didn’t work for you but what I learnt was that if you have to end with a bag of wickets and come out on the other side, every over must be considered the most important over in the game.” We talk about what might happen, what conditions are, what surface is but just allow it to pan out and it could become a wonderful game in the back half. One of the purposes is to try and make the batsman miss the pace of it or the trajectory of it.” For him, he was bowling better than he did in the away Bangladesh series. Even if there was a slight error in judging the length, the true nature allowed the batter to negotiate safely. It wasn’t Nagpur, it wasn’t Delhi and it wasn’t the raging turner of Indore for sure. For the most part of the innings, Khawaja continued to trust his back-foot play and despite looking awkward on occasions, stuck to it. While Ashwin didn’t get the big wicket of Khawaja, who batted forever during his 422-ball 180, the spinner had a plan worked out for him too. In the space of five deliveries, Ashwin injected some life into a day which was being dominated by batters. He had it all planned in his head, but wasn’t able to execute it to perfection, however, he will certainly “go to bed a lot happier” with that prized scalp. Not much was happening off the surface and batting with the right application wasn’t difficult. One wicket followed another and India clawed their way into the game after a rub of the green went the hosts’ way and unfortunately not Green’s way.

Ravichandran Ashwin still the kingpin (Mid-Day)

India's premier offie proves his worth yet again by picking 6-91 on a pitch that had very little assistance for bowlers and keeps hosts afloat in the game.

If we talk solely of the current series, his has been a stellar role, with 24 wickets in four games, with the Australian second innings yet to come in the fourth Test at Motera. “He has such a vast variety and tries so many things that even a set batsman has to be watchful against him. Whenever it seems that he has had his time, he has reinvented himself with deliveries like the carrom ball and the leg-cutter to add to his variety. With the six Australian wickets he picked in the first innings on a flat Motera pitch, he is now just four wickets shy of the coveted mark. He keeps picking up wickets at home to be on the cusp of becoming only the third Indian bowler to claim 700 international wickets. On the contrary, he has worked hard on his skills and fitness to remain relevant.

And for his sixth wicket, he used the drift and dip to force Nathan Lyon to play inside the line and edge a ball to slip. It was this ability in the air that Ashwin admitted he'd lost in the Bangladesh series but regained for this one. In his usual world, a big Ashwin performance would be an indicator of India marching ahead in a match progressing along quickly. I will go to bed tonight a bit earlier and a bit happier." Khawaja was happy to play him off the pitch and from the backfoot, the slowness of the wicket allowing him to do so. To make sense of those numbers in footballing terms, he was the central midfielder putting in a shift, mopping things up defensively as well as the one creating plays and then himself getting at the end of it and scoring the goal. Then he floated the next one up at 79 kilometers to the hour. Alex Carey fell in the same over as Green for a four-ball duck. Carey got nowhere close to the pitch of the ball, was yanked out of shape attempting a big shot and skied the ball to backward point. Showing his ability to adapt mid-innings and mid-spell, Ashwin began imparting more overspin on his off-breaks, which dipped and bounced more than his under-cutting spinners. For once Ashwin started beating batters in the air, the pitch and its behaviour was mostly incidental. Watch him operate in his bubble during a spell in a tight session of a Test match, his brows furrowed in concentration as he mutters something to himself before his run-up.
