The day after: In Tripura, return to familiar post-poll violence (The Indian Express)

Over the decades, political patronage networks incentivised violence against rivals and the problems were compounded by a demographic shift.

But the culture of violence has been passed on, it is a legacy issue. “Out of over 1,000 incidents, in which so far three lives have been lost, details of 668 cases have been submitted to the state administration as the Governor remained unavailable to meet the CPI(M) and Left Front delegation,” the CPI(M) Polit Bureau has said in a statement. This time, the rise of TIPRA Motha on the plank of “Greater Tipraland” has added another dimension to the post-poll clashes, with fears being expressed over the implications of those faultlines getting reopened. Such a joint delegation is also indicative of the changed political topography in Tripura. The intensity of the violence increased after March 2, when the results were announced. In the last three Assembly elections, the polling percentages were 89.95 per cent, 91.38 per cent and 93.57 per cent.

CPI(M) and Congress allege that 638 incidents of arson, violence and assaults have occurred in the state since the March 2 poll results; BJP has rejected ...

Violence is actually seen in West Bengal and Kerala and was seen during 25 years of Left rule in Tripura. The Congress has charged that hundreds of its party workers have fled from their homes due to political hostilities with the ruling camp. However, soon after the verdict was out, violence broke out across the state with the Opposition parties’ activists allegedly coming under attack, especially in constituencies where they lost. Congress MP Ranjeeta Ranjan said they would raise the issue in both Houses of Parliament and present their experience before the country. Political violence was often witnessed during the erstwhile Left Front and Congress regimes. However, the Opposition CPI(M) and Congress parties charge that at least 638 incidents of arson, violence, assaults etc have occurred in the state since the outcome of the polls. The Tripura Police however issued a statement to refute their allegations, stating that the accompanying police escort team responded quickly and rescued the team safely. According to the police, over 150 small and major incidents of violence have been registered from different parts till now and that while over a thousand persons were detained in this regard on preventive grounds, at least 10 others were arrested in specific cases. Before leaving for Agartala, the MPs, speaking to reporters, charged that the law and order has “totally collapsed” in Tripura. The mob was also said to be carrying lathi and bricks or stones. Following the Friday incident, the parliamentary delegation suspended their visits to other violence-affected areas . This was in sharp contrast to past Assembly polls that often involved booth jamming, booth rigging, widespread clashes between the workers of rival parties, injuries and even deaths.
