Ke Huy Quan had mostly disappeared from Hollywood for over two decades, dispirited by the lack of on-camera work for Asian Americans.

He’s been the toast of awards season, winning statues at the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice and SAG Awards, in addition to landing his first Oscar nod. “Thank you,” he said. This — this is the American dream!” He rose to fame before his teenage years, playing Harrison Ford’s sidekick in 1984’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and appearing in 1985’s “The Goonies.” But Quan quit acting shorty after because he found there weren’t many substantial film roles for Asian people. He didn’t return to acting until 2021 in “Everything Everywhere” as Waymond Wang, the goofy husband to Michelle Yeoh’s multiverse-straddling laundromat owner. He returned in a big way, winning the supporting actor Oscar to cap an inspiring comeback story.

Ke Huy Quan: From forgotten child star to Oscars hero (BBC News)

He was a child star in the 1980s, but gave up on acting when Hollywood gave up on him.

"Spielberg was the first person to put an Asian face in a Hollywood blockbuster," he said. "If you were to take 100 scripts, there was a high probability that none of them would feature any meaningful Asian characters. On paper, the film is a tough sell. Three weeks later, Quan was on his way to Sri Lanka to start shooting the film. But as the 90s wore on, the offers began to dwindle. I wanted to be up there along with my fellow Asian actors. Quan didn't intend to audition, but the casting director suggested "My journey started on a boat. They would make fun of us when we were in school. An agent friend agreed to represent him - and two weeks later Quan received a call about Everything Everywhere All at Once. Ma, I just won an Oscar!" Now he has made a remarkable comeback by winning an Oscar.
