Overall, it is the kind of film that doesn’t look good but if you give it a chance, it begins to feel right. Ashima has given her scenes where she could portray the pent-up rage of a mother who doesn’t have the tools to express herself in a foreign land. Rani’s performance looks jarring in the beginning as she tries a little too hard to execute the stereotype of a Bengali housewife in an alien milieu. As a counter to the strident approach of Debika, Jim Sarbh as Daniel Singh Cieupick, a Norwegian lawyer of Indian origin, brings the required balance to the narrative when he tells an Indian court that not all mothers are doting and not all adopted children lose the way. She more than hints at a scam in the welfare services but doesn’t question the Norwegian concept of putting children first. How she survives and takes on the system takes us on a roller coaster ride of emotions.

Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway review: Rani Mukerji film builds ... (The National)

The Bollywood star plays a mother who fights for custody of her children, but its real message is lost in a messy plot.

The film eventually finds its stride in the final act, when the action shifts to India and Debika fights another battle against her in-laws. However, what could have been an effective look at the immigrant experience, the clash of cultures, institutionalised racism and one woman's desperate fight for justice in a foreign land, is reduced to an overwrought portrayal that soon becomes exhausting. There are also insinuations of domestic violence, a charge vehemently denied by Debika's husband Anirudh (played by Anirban Bhattacharya), who's determined to be a model citizen as he awaits his Norwegian passport.

Film Review: 'Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway' starring Rani Mukerji as a ... (Gulf News)

Rani Mukerji is a raging bull of a mother in this loud drama about child custody and woes.

While the film keeps you engaged because of the sheer audacity and unfairness of the tragedy, there was a lot of wasted potential. But in some subtle scenes – like the one where Debika ravenously eats rice, milk, and banana without a care in the world when she gets a breakthrough in the custody case, Mukerji shines bright. The tired tropes of inserting a song to underline Debika’s character arc as a tired mother, doting guardian, and a high-pitched wife doesn’t help their case either. After all, a ghastly crime that stokes second-hand outrage was played out with a ferocious and agonised mother aiming to reclaim her children – now wards of the Norwegian state – and her dignity. Cultural norms like feeding your own child with your hands instead of using cutlery, co-sleeping with young kids, and placing a black dot on their face to ward off the evil eye may be innocent cultural norms, but these practices are deemed draconian and beastly by the Norwegian authorities who believe children are inherently unsafe in an Indian home shepherded by a toxic husband (Anirban Bhattacharya) and an unapologetically Bengali tigress of a mom. It’s outrageously shocking that the child welfare officials in a state would wield so much power that natural parents in a foreign country are forced to give up their kids for adoption.

Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway movie review: When a film's story centres around a mother's relentless fight to reunite with her children, it is bound to pull at ...

But it is the story that is the biggest winner of this heart-wrenching story. You want to feel their emotions but because of the melodrama and Rani playing for the gallery- it doesn't translate well for the audience. And while we are supposed to deeply feel for her character and the pain she is going through, we end up squirming at her over-the-top act. Bhattacharya is known for his well-rounded performances in various Bengali films and in Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway, he excels as Anirudh- so much so that you end up disliking him. It is conflicting for the actor clearly because there are moments where she forgets her character and speaks effortless Hindi but then goes back to an uneven version of the language. Yes, she is an anguished mother and some of the scenes are so powerful that Rani is able to project the pain of her character well, but she ever so often crosses that thin line of emotional to melodrama. At one time, Rani can be heard arguing about how one feeds the child macher jhol-bhaat (fish curry and rice ) with a fork- a dish that is a staple in every Bengali household. Based on a real-life incident that took place in 2011 and led to a diplomatic row between India and Norway, Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway boasts of great writing and performances but is still not an easy watch. Written by Chibber along with Rahul Handa and Sameer Satija, the film gets the mood right- which is of despair, uncertainty and anxiousness. Filmmaker Ashima Chibber's film Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway stars Rani Mukerji as Debika Chatterjee who is separated from her two young children by the Norway Children's Welfare Program on the pretext of bad parenting. The father was accused of not helping his wife with household chores and the mother was called mentally unstable. Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway movie review: When a film's story centres around a mother's relentless fight to reunite with her children, it is bound to pull at heartstrings.

Jim Sarbh as the court appointed lawyer who comes to their defence initially is such a study in contrast - a true lesson in how restraint and subtlety can go a long way in conveying the proper emotions too. There are moments when we tend to empathize with the husband who comes across in comparison as extremely mild mannered and law-abiding to a fault. When Rani Mukerji takes on a role, you can bet she will pour her heart and soul into the role, until all we see and hear across the screen is her.
