Shriya and the actress playing her mother look like a dream in an arid desert — all decked up in regalia and sporting dewy fresh flowers when the rest of the population is smeared in grease and dust and every other dark makeup there is. It takes a formulaic route and the characterisation of the caricaturish villains does not add up to the story. Kabzaa is a film that talks about the rise of a common man in the most violent way possible. Every single conflict gets resolved in a few minutes and, because of this, we are hardly invested in the story. It masquerades as a film that is high on content, but, in retrospect, it has a wafer-thin storyline. R Chandru’s Kabzaa is a film that loves bullets, guns and beheaded men. Kabzaa is 2 hours and 16 minutes and the Tamil dub version feels much longer, thanks to the ridiculous dialogues.

Murali Sharma as the leader of the royals is cunning and sharp. Kiccha Sudeep’s role in the film is more of a cameo. With a part 2 already in the pipeline, Kabzaa is at best an OTT watch, that too if you’re interested to know how KGF could have been with a flat storyline, dull music and uninteresting characters. Upendra Rao manages to perform with the best of his capabilities as the lead, Arkeshwara. The revengeful murder of Arkeshwara’s brother by the mafia don and his gang then fuels him to punish those who killed his brother. One comprises of the royals, whose piwers were taken back after 1947, while the other is of the mafia.

The period action thriller, Kabzaa has opened to mixed reviews from the audience and critics alike. The film is being compared to Yash's KGF.

Sudeep and Upendra's entry scenes are said to be the highlights. However, a lot of moviegoers are comparing Kabzaa to Yash starrer KGF. Upendra, for all that he brings to the table, deserves a better film in Kabzaa 2. The characters of Shriya and Sudha (a mother who gives free license to fight fire with fire) find even lesser importance in the narrative than Srinidhi Shetty’s in KGF. But Kabzaa falls short in both innovation and writing even the most basic masala moments you would expect in a commercial film of this scale. For god knows why and how, top cop Bhargav Bakshi (Kichcha Sudeepa takes over Anant Nag’s role from KGF) has rounded up all the goons in the city and proceeds to (once again, god knows why) tell the story of a yesteryear gangster. Parallely, we are introduced to a political war that is brewing between Amarapura’s ruler Veer Bahadur (Murali Sharma) and Khaleed Bhai, the head of a mafia that has a never-ending hierarchy. But Kabzaa makes one wonder if ‘inspiration’ was an understatement, for the entirety of the film, from start to finish, feels like a rushed KGF rip-off loaded with empty shells of everything that made Neel’s films enjoyable masala cinema.

By the time of the climax, one is exhausted. However, the problem here is the senselessness is so much that it dominates the mass and drowns it. The second half is one long action block (until the end) accompanied by a loud background score. The second thing is the dialogue. Kabazaa is one of the worst movies dubbing-wise in recent years, and it can’t be emphasised enough. It doesn’t allow the momentum to be built even in stretches where something engaging is happening. And finally, the story comes across as a mishmash of gangster movies made recently by Prashanth Neel (especially to outsiders). Since it is presented in a mature way age-wise, and also the period set in place, she doesn’t look odd. But, the overall impact necessary for the part is missing due to the technical issues related to the script, direction and editing. The latter is always there, but it could have been better when it comes to the former. The first thing that instantly registers is the dubbing quality. Arkeshwara (Upendra) is a law-abiding citizen of a deceased patriot.

"Kabzaa" tries to imitate the blockbuster "KGF" from start to finish, but in the process, it becomes a laughingstock. As in "KGF," the protagonist becomes a formidable don, and mafia leaders from other cities vow to kill him. The cinematography and production design are both solid (albeit mostly a rip-off of "KGF"). The background score, composed by Ravi Basrur of "KGF" fame, features loud noises. "Kabzaa" is the latest one that has sparked interest. Both Kichcha Sudeep and Shivarajkumar, superstars of the Kannada film industry, make cameo appearances.

Sudeep makes, in the beginning and in the climax, a brief appearance but it creates an impact. Her dancing skills in the song – Namaami – deserve appreciation. It indicates a sequel of this movie in the offing. Upendra and Tanya Hope vie with each other in an item song – Chum Chum Chali Chali. The director’s hard work is evident in each and every frame of the movie. Director R Chandru deserves appreciation for handling the megaphone for this movie which deserves to be classified as a technically brilliant movie.
