World Sleep Day 2023: 7 Reasons Behind Consistently Poor Sleep (NDTV)

Keep reading as we discuss some of the most common reasons behind consistent lack of proper sleep.

If you consume them in the late afternoon or evening, you can have trouble going to sleep at night. It is in no way a substitute for a qualified medical opinion. It may be more difficult to fall asleep if you have breathing problems, are afraid of having an attack, use steroids, or take other breathing treatments that also have a stimulating impact like caffeine. Heartburn, or the reflux of acid and food into the oesophagus after eating, is another common condition that might keep you awake. The WASM believes, together, we can have a bigger impact on sleep health and #WorldSleepDay than we could individually. Half of the caffeine in your body can take up to six hours to leave your system. Regrettably, late-night workouts can cause a higher heart rate when it's time to retire for the evening. Even if you drink your entire cup of coffee in the morning, too much caffeine might keep you up all night. World Sleep Day is a yearly celebration of sleep and a call to action on significant sleep-related concerns, such as health care, education, social issues, and driving. Through better prevention and management of sleep disorders, it strives to minimise the burden of sleep difficulties on society. This year's World Sleep Day has as its theme: Sleep is Essential for Health. Every year, on the Friday before the Spring Vernal Equinox, this holiday is observed by more than 70 nations and has 155 events held worldwide.

World Sleep Day: Are Indian children sleep deprived? How many ... (The Indian Express)

Growth hormones are primarily secreted during deep sleep and usually in the hours before midnight. This is one of the reasons an early bedtime is ...

Ø Helping to go back to sleep: All human beings sleep in “cycles” and wake at the end of cycles, including babies and toddlers. Ø Feeding or rocking to sleep: It is biologically normal for babies and young toddlers to sleep while nursing/bottle feeding or while being walked/rocked in arms up till the age of 3.5 to 4 years. Ø Age-appropriate routines: The right number of naps and wake times according to the baby’s age, an early bedtime and sufficient night sleep are the key. As far as possible, young children should not need to be “woken up” in the mornings. Babies often need to be held in arms for their daytime naps and also sleep better when bed-sharing with their parents day or night. The first step to “sleep parenting” is acknowledging that parents have to support the child to sleep. It is important to understand and observe early sleep cues (like rubbing eyes) and not wait for late cues (like crying). Attention span: Studies have shown that children who consistently sleep fewer than ten hours a night before the age of three are three times more likely to have hyperactivity and impulsivity problems by age six. Ability to learn: Children make neural connections and store what they have learnt through the day in their brains while they are sleeping at night. Obesity: Sleep deprivation impacts the production of the hormone, leptin, which signals to our body that we are full. Growth: Growth hormones are primarily secreted during deep sleep and usually in the hours of sleep before midnight. Indian children are chronically sleep-deprived, partly due to the late sleep culture prevalent in households, with parents returning late from work, a late family dinner and, unlike in the West, no “early bedtime” ethos for children.
