F1 2023 practice results: FP1 timings from the Saudi Arabian Grand ... (PlanetF1)

All the results from the first practice session of the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix with Max Verstappen topping the timesheet.

Elsewhere, there was news of parts replacement with Lando Norris taking a whole new power unit following his issues in Bahrain. He ended the session P6 while his team-mate George Russell was in P5. It was an event without real incident as all 20 cars completed a full hour of smooth running. The man of the moment Fernando Alonso suggested his podium in Bahrain was not a one-off as he continued to put in quick times, finishing third on the timesheet. After a mix in tyre compounds in the opening half of FP1, the grid soon moved onto the softs to put in some quick laps with Verstappen’s 1:29.617 being the fastest of the lot of them. All the results from the first practice session of the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix with Max Verstappen topping the timesheet.

Wolff accepts 'reality' that Mercedes F1 car is off the pace (Sportstar)

Lewis Hamilton said Mercedes was so far off the pace that he would need three teams to fall out of a race just for him to have a chance to win.

“We can shave off a lot of performance deficit because we know (the direction to go in).” “And if we cannot demonstrate that we’re able to give him a car in the next couple of years, then he needs to look everywhere. “We were proven wrong, very simply,” Wolff said about sticking with the same concept after misreading information. “We have to set ourselves strong targets internally, because we know where the deficit is. “We need to do a better job,” Wolff said. I don’t think we can beat the teams in front of us, that’s the reality.”

Verstappen then shaved more time of his personal best to seal P1 with a lap of 1m29.617 while Pérez close to 0.438 off the Dutchman. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly finished in eighth place ahead of Williams’ Alex Albon and the top 10 order was rounded out by AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda. Defending champion and current title leader Max Verstappen had yet to appear, however, and when the Dutchman eventually made his first appearance it was on soft tyres. Alonso emerged on another set of softs and he managed to shave almost two tenths of a second off his personal best to close the gap to the Red Bull. Pérez wasn’t done, though, and he took P1 once more after a tour of 1:30.592s. Russell finished fifth for Mercedes 1:30.771 just 0.016s ahead of Hamilton, with Sainz in seventh. With Alonso third, almost seven tenths of a second off P1, Stroll took fourth for Aston Martin with a best time 1:30.577 that left as the last man withing a second of Verstappen. Verstappen improved again though to widen the gap to the then second-place Aston Martin driver and when Pérez at last found enough pace to leapfrog Alonso and get to just over five tenths of the Dutchman, Alonso has to settle for third, as he did not improved on his final flying lap. He quickly vaulted to the top of the timesheet and gradually worked his way to a time of 1:29.815. Alonso joined the Red Bull driver in that choice and he then eclipsed Pérez with a lap of 1:32.838, which was then beaten by Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, though his lap of 1:32.665 was perhaps surprisingly, set on hards. Pérez, still on the same set of softs, then moved back to top spot with a lap of 1:31.486 but he was gain ousted by Alonso on a 1:31.262. The Red Bull drivers were quickly off the block in the early running and Pérez claimed top sport a few minutes in with a lap of 1:32.969.

How F1 grid penalties work, and why Ferrari's Leclerc got bumped ... (The Athletic)

Such grid penalties may be harsh, but they're F1's tool for enforcing the cost-saving part allotment rules. Here's how they work.

Back of the grid penalties are prioritized, so if a driver qualified 14th and had a 10-place penalty, for example, they would start ahead of a driver that had a back of the grid one. Once those who did not receive penalties are given their starting grid positions, the penalized portion of the grid is determined. Some of the penalties were “lessened” simply because there weren’t enough spots on the grid for everyone to be fully punished. When a new element is used, this becomes part of the driver’s “pool,” which means it can be interchanged race to race. - Penalties occurring at the same event are also cumulative: If you go over the limit for two different parts, you get both punishments. The penalty is for using more than his two allotted control electronics units for the season, after a pair of failures in Bahrain forced Ferrari to give his car its third.

'Big changes': Hamilton turns up heat on Mercedes as Piastri's grim reality sets in — F1 Practice Wrap.

“Yes, copy,” retorted his pit wall, seemingly sensitive to the team’s need for a changed approach as they seek to reverse their slump. His Aston Martin appeared to be the only car capable of fighting with them. Verstappen with 1:29.952 ahead of Perez until Alonso, on softs, split them again. “We need to make some big changes,” said Russell in a stern voice. The close dicing at the front continued with the Red Bulls narrowly ahead of Alonso and then a gap of two-tenths to the pack led, after half an hour, by Hulkenberg and Gasly. Piastri had a close call when he had to take evasive action after nearly colliding with the rear of Sainz. The top three were separated by 0.012 before Verstappen, again, lifted the bar in 1:29.603 after switching to softs for a brief simulation of what may lie ahead in Saturday’s qualifying session. After Verstappen’s early supremacy in a Red Bull one-two in opening practice the second session began in cooler conditions, the air temperature descending to 25 degrees and the track from 44 to 31. Sergio Perez was third in the second Red Bull ahead of Esteban Ocon of Alpine, George Russell of Mercedes and Pierre Gasly in the second Alpine. Alonso’s performance confirmed his speed this year after a strong showing to finish third in the season-opening race in Bahrain, but it was Verstappen who set the pace with some ease. Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton was 11th for Mercedes, with a best lap of 1:30.599, a second slower than Verstappen, on the day he announced he was no longer working with his long-serving performance coach Angela Cullen. Max Verstappen showed no ill effects from a stomach bug on Friday as he topped the times for Red Bull ahead of Fernando Alonso in Friday’s second free practice at this weekend’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Red Bull dashes rivals' feint hopes; frontrunner dark horse emerges: F1 practice talking points.

This lack of efficiency will be down to the current car having its development switched off late last year when the team realised it needed to change development direction. Alfa Romeo remains a bit of a mystery after a strong showing in Bahrain. All of Alonso’s 0.2-second deficit came in the second half of the lap, which is a long flat-out blast split by just two corners. McLaren and AlphaTauri in particular are being hamstrung by too much drag, costing bucketloads of time down the straights. In Bahrain he burnt through two electronics control units in his power unit, the maximum allowed for a single season, and he’s been forced to adopt a third in Jeddah. There is perhaps a single asterisk on the results, and that is that this is the first low-downforce high-speed track of the year. It’s therefore difficult to imagine a situation in which the SF-23 can suddenly become a contender for the front row. He didn’t conduct a long-run simulation of more than a few laps, making his pace difficult to read. When the gap between Red Bull Racing and Aston Martin widens on Saturday night, Ferrari will likely slip between them, but telemetry data doesn’t suggest the car is outperforming the RB19 through the corners as it is. But Aston Martin tends to run with less fuel and in a higher engine mode on Fridays. This weekend the gap is looking more like 0.3 seconds — more than enough for another comfortable result. There might be more than usual still to come on Saturday — at least some team will hope that’s the case.

F1 Saudi Arabia GP qualifying live updates: Max Verstappen in ... (The Athletic)

The second round of the 2023 Formula One season is here, with Red Bull's Max Verstappen looking to win in Saudi Arabia for the second year in a row.

Lewis Hamilton said after finishing fifth that the team had to accept it was the fourth-fastest team, trailing Red Bull, Ferrari and Aston Martin. We spent two weeks in Bahrain, and all became very familiar with the circuit and conditions so the learning curve from this Friday will be a lot steeper. “But we have now shifted all our focus to this weekend and Jeddah. When it comes to ranking Formula One drivers, you’ve got two straightforward choices: go from whoever’s got the most points to whoever has the least, or from whoever has the least to whoever has the most. What most surprised you about the opening race of the season? Jeddah is a street circuit, which means overtaking during the race is very difficult. If you can only spare us a few hours this weekend — stick with us today, as recent history would suggest qualifying in Jeddah will be more exciting than the Grand Prix itself. Using Google Earth to brainstorm possible track layouts, the company and F1’s motorsports team delivered not only one of F1’s fastest circuits, but one of the quickest built. It might not take Lewis Hamilton very long to follow Angela Cullen out of the door at Mercedes. For instance, every room in Las Vegas is priced at $900 a night, and this is a small motel, every single room in the city is booked out. “Europeans, for example, don’t see the sun for the most part so when the Singapore race is scheduled, they book their tickets well in advance and they book Singapore Airlines, which is a government-run airline, and fly down. “Every country in the world, save for a couple of them, underwrite races (drop costs via reduced tax). And that, he insists, is the only way India’s F1 itch will be scratched. Unlike F1, however, Formula E found a promoter in Greenko and is backed by the Telangana government. India has already hosted a Formula E race and will host the first edition of the Moto GP at the BIC in September. They are not in a great position to negotiate deals.” In return, they filed for bankruptcy a few years after the last race. But frankly, no one here is jumping out of the woodwork to host them. India and China both have the manufacturers, both have the numbers. None of this is to say F1 will return to India, but… Formula One was done with bureaucratic hurdles, tax issues, and a general lack of professionalism in India.

2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix qualifying report and highlights ... (Formula 1 RSS UK)

Sergio Perez claimed pole position for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix during an action-packed qualifying session at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit after team ...

The 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix will begin at 2000 local time on Sunday night. You never know with these cars, reliability issues can hit you at any time.” – Sergio Perez, Red Bull. Max has been really strong the whole weekend and hopefully tomorrow we can have both cars up there. “It was tricky, that Q3, especially not getting that second lap. Nailing that lap, you really feel the Formula 1 cars coming alive in this place and just maximising that lap was very important because with the issue we had in the final run, it was really important as the track was improving. Verstappen limped back to the pits in a bid to rescue the situation, but with only half a dozen minutes on the clock, there was little his mechanics can do – meaning he hopped out of the cockpit, and out of Q2, down in 15th position. Alonso placed third with another strong outing in his Aston Martin but will be the first beneficiary of Leclerc’s drop from P2 to P12, joining Perez on the front row and setting up a tantalising run down to Turn 1 on Sunday. When the green light switched back on at the end of the pit lane for the start of Q2, it was Alonso who made the first move and stormed to the top of the timesheets with a 1m 28.757s – marginally quicker than the time posted by Q1 pace-setter Verstappen. Piastri and Gasly were the other two drivers to progress to Q3, meaning the two Alfa Romeos (of Zhou and Bottas) and two Haas machines (of Hulkenberg and Magnussen) joined the frustrated Verstappen as Q2 eliminees. It was a messy second F1 qualifying session for Logan Sargeant, who lost his first lap for exceeding track limits, spun out during his second effort and finally encountered a technical problem on his final attempt – leaving him at the back of the grid without a time. Moments later, Sargeant had the biggest moment of Q1 when he spun at the high-speed Turn 22/23 and stopped perilously close to the barriers, leaving him in a rush to post a lap time after also losing his first effort due to track limits. AlphaTauri lost both of their cars in Q1, with Yuki Tsunoda and Nyck de Vries taking P16 and P18 respectively – the latter ruing a mistake at the final corner of his final lap after missing FP3 due to a power unit change.

Lando Norris clipped a wall in Q1 and was unable to continue qualifying with damage to his steering, finishing in 19th for McLaren. The main concern to him and the team will be whether they have a fearsome but potentially fragile car. On this form they have reason to be optimistic that they have, at the very worst, the third fastest car on the grid. On the final hot runs in Q3 Pérez set the benchmark with a pace on the high-speed circuit, run for almost 80% of a lap at full throttle, that indicated how much raw grunt the Red Bull power unit is delivering. In final practice Verstappen had been a second clear of the next nearest team, Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin, but the world champion will now start the race from 15th on the grid. For Mercedes’s George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, in fourth and eighth respectively, this was very much what the team had been expecting.
