World Water Day 2023: History, significance, theme (Hindustan Times)

World Water Day 2023: The main objective is to inspire people to sustainably manage the freshwater resources and learn more about water-related issues.

The UN said, "Billions of people and countless schools, businesses, healthcare centres, farms and factories don’t have the safe water and toilets they need. As per the estimates by OECD, global water demand (in water withdrawals) would increase by 55% by 2050. The first World Water Day was observed in the year 1993. According to the United Nations website, the idea behind celebrating the day is to "support the achievement of sustainable development goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030." While many people are privileged to have running water 24x7, there is a huge population around the globe that does not have access to any amount of water. Everyone knows that 'Water is the elixir of life'.

It seeks to ensure that a considerable share of the water needs of urban areas are met through recycling of waste water, and that the water requirements of coastal cities with inadequate alternative sources of water are met through adoption of new and appropriate technologies. It seeks to optimise the efficiency of existing irrigation systems, including rehabilitation of systems that have been run down, and also expand irrigation, wherever feasible, with a special effort to increase storage capacity. The mission considers the provisions of the National Water Policy, and developed a framework to optimise water-use by increasing water-use efficiency by 20 per cent through regulatory mechanisms with differential entitlements and pricing. Using a purely quantitative methodology, Thomas Homer-Dixon successfully correlated water scarcity and the scarcity of arable lands to an increased chance of violent conflict. Only three per cent of water on the Earth is fresh, and two-thirds of that is ice. Sustainable Development Goal 6 is a unique opportunity for mainstreaming water in the national and subnational planning.

She will present the struggle for the right to water and water resources in the country and the Balkan region. And yet, about 90% of investments in water infrastructure come from the public sector. Global water demand is projected to increase by 55% by the middle of the century. Personal and domestic uses of water should have the highest priority over productive uses, such as agri-business and industry. Billions of people are being held back because their right to water and sanitation still needs to be fulfilled. Seven out of the 10 most water-stressed nations are in the Middle East and North Africa. Rising temperatures, an increased demand for water and the construction of dams have led to several lakes shrinking across the Middle East. The Middle East has a predominantly dry and arid climate with low rainfall and high temperatures. It is located in northwestern Iran and has now all but dried up to become a salt plain. When water withdrawals surpass available resources, a country is either depleting its aquifers faster than they can be replenished or has significantly high levels of desalination water production. The timelapse videos below show some lakes have all but disappeared.

Coupled with inadequate sanitation this can affect how people prepare and eat their meals by increasing the incidence of waterborne diseases, a major cause of malnutrition. A quarter of the people around the world use unsafe drinking-water sources. It will come as no surprise that the most food-insecure people live in developing countries and in arid areas where little water is available – or too much water, of too poor a quality. These benefits also help to increase people’s food security, empowering them over the long term. Bad soils mean more carbon heading into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change, intensifying extreme weather events, accelerating land degradation and perpetuating the cycle. Water gushes where it should trickle and trickles where it should pour freely, thanks to climate extremes.
