Why government is the key to unlocking AI's true potential (The Hill)

Governments possess the key building blocks to unleash AI's potential — data — but first, governments must learn how to walk with tech before running.

This is made possible by machine learning working on tens-of-millions of state wage records to understand which careers similar job seekers have switched to, stuck with and earned more in. Massive amounts of data are what enable machine learning to do such impressive things. Unfortunately, no off-the-shelf fixes exist to do the hard work of actually improving service delivery. While contemporary technology is necessary, it is not sufficient. Successful projects in both the public and private sector, use an iterative, resident-first approach. During the pandemic to keep our heads above water, we made every operational fix possible to free up staff and streamline the process. Unemployment insurance problems were not due only to old technology, so the fix isn’t just new technology. Process needs better tech, but process must also change to leverage better tech. But these are parlor tricks compared to the hard work of addressing our thorniest problems like poverty and inequality. States did their best to process claims quickly, but long delays were the norm. It is deeply integrated with processes. But I also saw how technology can and cannot help.

Open House: How do you view the AAP government's performance ... (The Tribune)

The Punjab Police have finally cracked down on pro-Khalistan activists like Amritpal Singh. Do you feel that the state government had been dragging its feet in ...

Just reiterating the promised ‘Rangla Punjab’ by the present government is just a bogus proposition. There have been agitations in different cities of the state by all sorts of people. The AAP government in Punjab is now one-year-old and it is time to review its performance keeping in view of the promised transformation of the state. In a democracy like India, which has a population of 140 crore and a huge diversity of opinions because of different beliefs and values, it is very difficult to make new policies or to revise the old ones. The AAP government in Punjab came to power with a thumping majority after five decades of Congress and SAD-BJP governments. However, neither in the last Budget nor in this one the government announced the aid, which exposes the real face of AAP. The assessment of the government’s performance in the past one year highlights various laudable moves, either proposed or actually taken for the welfare of the people. Seven, the government has nearly reined in the sand, drug and transport mafias. The efforts of the Punjabis and the policies and programmes of the Center and state government will certainly pave the way for Punjab to be the number one state in the country in coming years. The next most disturbing failure is the deteriorating quality of local administration, especially in the fields of cleanliness in general and waste management in particular. The AAP-led government has completed one year in the state. The major focus of the Punjab Government at present seems to be on maintaining law and order and communal harmony. Do you feel that the state government had been dragging its feet in the matter?

The AAP government in Punjab is now one-year-old and it is time to review its performance keeping in view of the promised transformation of the state. Do you feel that the state government had been dragging its feet in the matter? The efforts of the Punjabis and the policies and programmes of the Center and state government will certainly pave the way for Punjab to be the number one state in the country in coming years. The AAP-led government has completed one year in the state. The government should generate more revenue to ease the growing debt problem and tackle the law and order situation efficiently and effectively. However, the most worrisome is the fact that there is no visible improvement in law and order situation, the ground visibility of which was necessitated most. However, the AAP government has been found wanting on the law and order front. Vacancies in thousands in all the government departments including very crucial wings like health and education explain the sorry state of affairs. In the past one year, the government has taken various steps for the welfare and development of the state and turning it into Rangala Punjab. On Republic Day this year, the state government had announced the opening of 30 more mohalla clinics in Amritsar district but till date, eight out of 30 clinics are yet to start and those working are without staff or working without medicine and testing labs. Upon the completion of one year in power, our Chief Minister has asked the farmer community to give suggestions to formulate an agriculture policy for the state. Moreover, the infrastructure has also seen improvement in the past one year.

Successive governments have taken steps to strengthen whistleblowing policy and practice. Workers who blow the whistle are entitled to protections, which were introduced through the Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998 (PIDA). This review has been a priority for me since joining government, and it will take stock of whether the whistleblowing framework is operating effectively and protects those who call out wrongdoing in the workplace. Whistleblowing is a vital tool in tackling economic crime and unsafe working conditions, and the UK was one of the first countries in the world to develop a whistleblowing framework. A review of the whistleblowing framework – the laws that support workers who blow the whistle on wrongdoing in the workplace – has been launched by the Government today.
