It's the beginning of the end as the Roy siblings abandon their hopes and dreams to take one last shot at destroying Daddy.

But the tender moment is soon disrupted by news that his children are trying to hijack the Pierce deal; time to bench the vulnerability and switch back to vitriol. The episode ends with a half-asleep Logan tuning into ATN’s nightly chat show, the ageing king surveying the fiefdom. Roman has traditionally been the least eager to challenge Logan, and The Hundred was a way of doing something new without poking the bear. While the kids toast their success, Logan finally reaches out to pass on his best wishes. The crushing insults are still there (“Your face is giving me a headache,” Roman tells Shiv), but they remain a united front – for now. Their latest venture is The Hundred, a “disruptor” news site that would probably be terrible but also something I would likely subscribe to. Firstly, Shiv and Tom are headed for divorce and Tom needs to know he’ll still be an honorary Roy even if he’s no longer married to one. Succession loves a good party scene, even if the celebrations are often tense affairs with very little to celebrate. [the fourth season of Succession would be the last](/link/follow-20170101-p5ctxr). Succession season 4 premiere recap: A game of betrayals and ... (Hindustan Times)

The highly-anticipated fourth season of the hit HBO series “Succession” premiered on March 26, and it did not disappoint.

Overall, the first episode of Succession's fourth season is a strong start to the final season, with the show's trademark mix of dark humor, family drama, and betrayal all present. He eventually escapes to a diner with his bodyguard, Colin (Scott Nicholson), where he ruminates on the fleeting nature of life and the economy. Shiv, Kendall, and Roman's storyline takes them to Los Angeles, where they are waiting for Nan Pierce (Cherry Jones), who is trying to sell her left-leaning media company, Pierce Global Media. [marriage](https://www.hindustantimes.com/topic/marriage), with Tom starting to realize that Logan values him only as a way to keep tabs on his rebellious children. HBO's hit show Succession is back with its fourth season, and it promises to be an exciting one. But what eventually rouses him is what is happening across the country, where his children are plotting a new venture, "The Hundred," with the top thinkers in the major fields.

As intriguing as it is to see the siblings triumphant, most of the episode’s highlights come in and around the party, as a reminder that this is one of the most quotable television shows ever made. Well, the difference is that he can call up Cyd and order her to get rid of the host he’s watching — “He looks like a ballsack in a toupee,” he complains — but he’s mostly marinating in his disappointments in the same way he wants his audience to. (The inverse, in a way, of Connor and Willa, who are still moving toward the wedding she has resigned herself to.) But neither is happy to see their marriage ending, and neither can find true comfort from anybody else knowing Logan has scarred both of them. The older he gets, the closer he gets to oblivion, and he understands that this is not a fate that he can avoid through psychological-dominance tactics. Actually attempt to mock him, and you will not only piss him off, but inspire him to turn the tables on you. It’s a new dynamic the likes of which the show hasn’t really employed before, and it’s a smart place to begin this final run of episodes. The kids have repeatedly tried to get to the front of the line by operating independently from one another, and they have all failed. The trio are not entirely on the same page — Roman very much wants to stick with their new media venture, The Hundred, which is described as “Substack meets MasterClass meets The Economist meets The New Yorker,” and looks at Pierce as a dying legacy brand — but they also ultimately recognize that this is the move, both for their own fortunes and to stick it to their old man. And there is nothing Logan can do about it, save to yell a lame insult at them about their ability to say the highest number(*), which only increases their glee at getting one over on him. They work together to (with the help of their new money man, “T”) figure out an escalating series of bids that will cut Logan off at the knees, especially since they know Nan Pierce despises him and would only sell to him if she had no other choice. Among the reasons he has been able to dominate and manipulate his offspring for so long is that he plays favorites, always making one or two of them feel like they have ascended to be his Number One Boy (or Girl, in Shiv’s case), and forcing them into positions where they will feel like they have to betray one another, thus leaving Logan free to, as usual, get what he wants. And it is their teamwork, along with a call from Tom to Shiv that reveals more than he intends, that allows them to well and truly foil Logan’s plans and snatch Pierce for themselves.

Succession 4: From release schedule to episode numbers, here are ... (PINKVILLA)

It is expected that tension will be soaring high in the fourth and final season of the HBO series.

Before the writers started writing the script of Succession season 4 Armstrong raised the idea of making it the final part and so they played around different scenarios. Therefore, it is expected that tension will be soaring high in the fourth and final season of the HBO series. However, it is not much unusual considering that even Season 1 and 2 of the series had ten episodes. Previously creator Jesse Armstrong said that the end of Succession was always kind of present in his mind as he knew that the show is not going to run forever. The season 3 of Succession ended with a heated power struggle between Roy children and their father Logan. But if you think that the Roy family will hug it all out and forget everything, then you are clearly mistaken.

'Succession' viewers react to “incredible” season premiere (NME.com)

'Succession' fans have shared their reactions to the fourth and final season's first episode following its premiere.

He added: “I had the last scene pretty early. “That’s how I pitched it to my writers’ room, kind of hoping I’d get argued out of it so we’d see a way to do more seasons, because I love working with these people. I wavered on what were the best lines, the best way to express it — but that ending from the first draft is the one you’ll see when the episode comes out.” Love the direction of the storyline already off the top. Sometimes you see a scene that is blocked and shot and lit so precisely that it hurts. I’m sick of her being snubbed as Supporting. She’s going to kill this season and deserves the push. I'll never get this frame out of my head. This scene is pure art. [March 27, 2023] I’ll never get this frame out of my head.” Elsewhere, Shiv and Tom are going through a trial separation following his betrayal of her in season three, and Shiv tells him that she wants a divorce.

With the unprecedented success of the show, it came as a shocker to many that the creators announced Season 4 as the finale. The plot of Succession is inspired by the reality of Rupert Murdoch and his six children. Media mogul Murdoch—the owner of News Corporation—is an Australian-born American business magnate, who has been married four times and has six children with three of his wives. In the previous installment, Waystar Rayco is in dire straits for many reasons including Logan Roy's declining health, his son Kendall's public crusade against the head of the family, and a high-profile scandal involving the company. In Season 1, after the father suffers a stroke, the four Roy children struggle to keep control of the company as the tantalizing idea of power causes rifts. Succession Season 4: Jeremy Strong on Tragedy Ahead for Kendall ... (Hollywood Reporter)

Succession star Jeremy Strong warns about dark storms ahead for Kendall Roy in season 4 and why he advocated for his character's story to end.

I actually feel like, in the beginning of this season, Kendall is a bit in the back seat of the car, and happy to be in a band. There’s something about the allure of newspapers that he both wants to compete with his father and dominate his father, but he also wants to be in his father’s footsteps. This is a nice moment of connection with his brother and sister, and the moment in the river where things are sort of placid and calm… I went to my house directly from the airport, took a long walk, sat on the beach, watched Kendall go down with the sun, and said, “Adios.” But he’s still coming back from the ropes of what happened in Italy, and happy to be along for this ride with his brother and sister. Kendall is aware that he has a sort of bottomless hole inside of him that he needs to fill, that in the past, he’s filled with drug use and substance abuse. What was it like to tap into that moment of victory for the siblings? There’s a lot of room for it to spiral, but for now, it’s a solid position. He’s going to continue trying to fill it that way, which I see as a sort of tragedy. There’s very little left of him to put the crown on. They sort of do a fireman’s carry out of that scene, and it continues into the beginning of this next season, where he’s leaning on them. For his part, Strong loves the premiere’s subtle use of Kendall — especially since it’s not going to last for long as the final season chugs along.

'Succession' Season 4, Episode 1 Review: Rummage Sale (Forbes)

Succession returns with a crunchy peanut butter of a premiere for its fourth and final season as the Roys prepare to do battle one last time for the Waystar ...

Finally, we come to the last of the Roy children. So, in the midst of Logan’s furious dealings with his children, in the middle of a high-stakes acquisition bid, Greg fails to read the room once again and asks his uncle for a private chat. Some of the finest acting I’ve ever seen, and this in a show filled with brilliant, powerful performances. When Shiv says it’s time to move on from the marriage, all Tom can say is “uh huh.” He tried to talk to her about his feelings but she shut him down, as usual. Logan’s top security guy / bodyguard Colin (Scott Nicholson) informs Greg that he’ll need to search her on the way out and Greg decides he’ll just hang back rather than break the news to his date. Later, Tom approaches Greg to tell him he’s the laughing stock of the entire party for bringing such a grotesque plebe to the private affair. The show opened up on Logan’s 80th birthday, so it’s only fitting that now—three seasons and nearly five years later—we get to watch him grit his teeth at “Happy Birthday To You” being sung by “the monsters” as he calls his too-happy guests. They’re in the process of starting up a new media company called The Hundred which is, according to Kendall, “Substack meets masterclass meets the Economist meets The New Yorker.” It’s a “private members club but for everyone” and “an indispensable bespoke information hub” that offers “high-calorie info-snacks” with the “ethos of a nonprofit but the path to crazy margins.” And so The Hundred is dropped like one of Kendall’s girlfriends and off they rush to buy a dying legacy media brand. She’s walking away with a ridiculous amount of money and a punch to Logan’s kidney. They meet with Nan who is every bit as conniving and money-and-status-obsessed as the Roy family, but too concerned with her image to just admit it. Fast forward to the even of the final sale of Waystar RoyCo in the Season 4 premiere.

At the same time that it's exciting to see Kendall, Roman, and Shiv back together, it's a bit sad to see an old dude alone on his birthday. Later on in the episode, Kendall, Roman, and Shiv outsmart their father in a bidding war for the acquisition of Pierce Global Media, a longstanding media company. In this first episode of Season 4, Logan is in a state of deep contemplation and emotion, perhaps more than we've ever seen from him in the past. At the end of the season, Kendall breaks down to Roman and Shiv, finally confessing to killing a waiter in the car accident during his sister's wedding. Roman and Shiv joined forces with their father after Kendall dropped a major bombshell about Logan at the end of Season 2, creating a stark divide between the siblings. Sure, holiday gatherings and impromptu yacht trips might physically unite the family for a moment, but it's never until war is declared on the Roys that they actually slam their skulls together and get to work.

He views his career like the ocean, where the lulls of looking for the next right project are followed by the crest of a really good moment; the trick is to wait for the wave to come. “I love that they’re quite bloody-minded and gladiatorial in that we shoot a 10- or 12-page scene in one continuous take and then do that eight or nine times over,” he explains. “It started to feel like it was more definitive as we got closer to the end, and I trust Jesse and his team to decide how to go out on a high,” he says. “It was pretty brave and cool that he was willing to be the fall guy for the family, and [last season] when he sensed that Shiv [Sarah Snook] was disappointed that he got off the hook, and in fact maybe wanted him to go to jail, it was a death by a thousand cuts,” he explains. He didn’t have the chance to explain his reasons to Shiv, or to have the chance to tell her that there wasn’t anything he did that she wouldn’t have done. He says the cast “sort of knew the end might be coming” and that Armstrong had spoken to them to lay the groundwork for the end while still leaving room to change his mind. “It was sort of awful,” he says. Tom and Greg's (ostensibly platonic) relationship is the most important and intimate one on the show as it enters its final days.

In true Succession fashion, the level of its celebratory fervour sits somewhere below ‘shareholder meeting’: today is merely a premise under which to gather the suits together and talk shop. And boy, do these people love to talk: the Roys and their entourage are plagued by a compulsive inability to speak about anything other than the next acquisition of a legacy media company. Empires are built and destroyed, elections are fixed and wars declared, and incomprehensibly vast sums of money are shuffled like cards, all because of the words passed between a few people in a room.

That Burberry Bag Was Perfect (The Cut)

'Succession''s season-four premiere undermined the Burberry empire in one swift monologue after Cousin Greg brought a random date and Tom and the other Roys ...

Well, it turns out Tom felt that Bridget’s “ludicrously capacious bag” (big bags are for us peasants; the rich don’t need to carry anything around, that’s what assistants are for) that she presumably filled with “flat shoes for the subway” (both orthopedic footwear and public, eco-friendly transportation are for us peasants) or “a lunch pail” (a mid-day meal, especially one brought from home, is also for us peasants) was so “monstrous … And for that reason, this sizable, conspicuous bag was the perfect choice for Greg’s date to tote — she, and maybe even by extension Greg, will never be one of them. That she was one of them — one of the elite. That she knew, and decided to ignore, the value of the dollar. Bridget’s bag, on the other hand, is immediately identifiable, which in turn makes it gauche, tacky, and completely undesirable to the one percent. Upon her arrival, a single up-and-down glance is enough to send Logan’s assistant into a one-percent tizzy, and she pulls Greg aside to let him know that this party, thrown in honor of one of the richest men in the world, was, in fact, not a “fucking Shake Shack.” Noted.

He contemplated what comes after death (he doesn't think there's much) and tried to find a sense of control after losing the PGM deal by ending his birthday watching ATN News and barking orders at an executive. He cements himself on the second-lowest rung this week when he considers throwing another $100 million at his campaign because "if I were to fall under 1 per cent I would become a laughing stock". Tom lost the deal Logan really didn't want to lose, his wife asked for a divorce in their devastating yet terribly communicated exchange, and Greg decided to break up their bromance by bringing his new girlfriend to Logan's birthday. Kerry is languishing near the bottom this week, but she's one of the closest people to Logan and can't be underestimated – until Logan decides he's done with her. But being in a trio means he'll continue to get outnumbered by Shiv and Kendall, which could lead him to go crawling back to his Dad. Sure, her personal life is in tatters, and she more than likely overpaid for PGM just out of spite, but Shiv can still call this a win.

That may be why some tune into this show — the writing is unparalleled in American television right now. Where he ends up in the Succession pecking order is one of the great as-yet-unanswered questions. Meanwhile, fan favourite Cousin Greg (Nicholas Braun) has put his foot in it again, bringing a date to Logan’s birthday, who embarrasses herself by asking Logan for a selfie and worse. The shameless hubris of these people is gag-inducing. While the camera rarely stops moving in the scenes with Shiv, Kendall and Roman, darting around as if trying to catch their synapses firing, viewers shouldn’t expect the fireworks just yet. Meanwhile, Shiv and brothers Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Roman (Kieran Culkin, as acid-tongued as ever) are brainstorming a new “disrupter media brand” they’ve named The Hundred.

We would love to see the terrific Matthew McFayden (Tom Wambsgans) take out his frustrations over his emasculation at the hands of his manipulative and calculating wife, Shiv, out on the Waystar head honcho. [the end of Season 3 we see them resort to an alliance](https://collider.com/succession-season-4-roys-working-together/) because none of them has shown the willingness or ability to really do what it would ultimately take to dethrone Pops Roy. [Logan is the logical pick not only because of his advanced age and health issues](https://collider.com/succesion-season-4-logan-roy-death/), but because his kids don't like him very much, and are getting tired of being played like pawns in the corporate games that Logan is so adept at. After all, he was very close to being ousted at the end of last season, and his physical and mental health have been compromised throughout the entirety of the show. We've established the fact that the Roy children have been saddled with certain trademarks that aren't going to change very much, so something is going to have to change the family dynamic rather dramatically to continue the arduous task of upping the ante of an already brilliantly devious and devilishly addictive show. Shiv (Sarah Snook) kind of goes whichever way the wind blows with her forays into politics followed by several cutthroat attempts for the keys to the kingdom

Meanwhile, the wily old devil Logan has taken great delight in teasing us, pitting his offspring against each other in a kind of ornately gilded cage-fight. That, of course, is the central test that faces ailing Logan Roy, the family patriarch who built Waystar Royco, in Succession. It's his second oldest son, the drug-addled Kendall Roy; his daughter, the politically savvy Siobhan Roy; and his perverted youngest son, Roman Roy, who grasp the most for their father's throne. With its relentless pacing and sharp writing, “The Munsters” teases a lot of exciting leads for where this final season could go. Still processing Tom’s betrayal from the third season, Shiv refuses to engage with his attempts to explain himself, suggesting they should just accept the dissolution of their marriage. “We gave it a go,” the two painfully admit. Logan’s introspection about what lies beyond his empire is a telling nod to the finality of this season. Kendall and Shiv are all too willing to get back under their father’s skin, even at the cost of their independence. After three seasons of the best characters and conflicts that television has to offer, HBO’s “Succession” is finally coming to an end.
