Gaslight is an honest attempt to try something different but it suffers from severe pacing issues.

[Chitrangada Singh](https://www.pinkvilla.com/topic/chitrangada-singh) has the most nuanced character of the lot and she plays her part with honesty, although there are scenes that needed better execution. The scenes meant to scare don't scare enough and scenes which are meant to make one feel for the protagonist, just don't evoke the emotions. Viewers who like watching grungy films might be able to sit through it, whereas the rest might just hit the pause button within the first 30 mins. She is effectively able to show vulnerability, confusion and suspicion in her performance, just as her character demands. The film suffers from severe pacing issues, which makes it difficult to even appreciate the honest performances. The story lacks thrills and chills. The haunting background music enhances the look and feel of the film. Sara Ali Khan does reasonably well and her performance is quite restrained compared to what we have seen previously from her. Same can be said for the production design. The camera work and cinematography is done extremely well. Not much about the film can be said without giving away spoilers. Soon enough, she finds herself being manipulated by a few individuals who can go to any extent to get ownership of the estate.

Some you know it is a trope and you just find a unique way of telling them in a fresh manner. I like them as an audience, as a viewer and as a film-maker. And unlike others, she is very rooted and grounded and I feel that was something that was very appealing. And I felt like she really had it in her to pull this off. I had seen her work in Kedarnath and I thought that was a really good performance. So I believe trope is something which is a part and parcel of directing. I don’t know why people don’t like horror so much. Their approach and take to characters would be fresh, new and wouldn’t be something that you would expect. It’s completely different from what you would expect and that was something we were very conscious about when we were casting for the film. That is giving the edge because you don’t know how to put fingers to these characters. It got elements of spook and dread also. It got elements of psychological aspects as well.

The job of a filmmaker is to mend this blueprint in a way that surprises and shocks the audience. Akshay Oberoi plays a stereotypically ‘rich obsessed with his money’ character and there is no variation in it. She might have left the palace in her teen years, because this is the first time everyone is seeing her as a grown-up. It seemed like the cast was told to watch all possible direction Whodunits as a homework so they could replicate those performances in here. Vikrant Massey tries his best to hide things, but he cannot because the writing doesn’t let him. Also, why is everything so convenient for the killer at first? Gaslight is stuck in time when it chooses to add jump scares that give out the mystery more than scaring. So, here is a daughter coming back to her father after years. What is the point of this genre is not that? Meesha (Sara), an estranged daughter, returns to her King father after he writes a letter to her requesting a return.

However, she is the weakest aspect of “Gaslight.” Look, she gets constantly berated for being a nepo-baby and for the projects that she chooses. Akshay Oberoi chews the scenery because he knows that’s the only way he’s going to be noticeable in this film, and it works. I am using the term “viewing experience” very loosely because you can hardly see anything in “Gaslight.” Since the first few frames of the film are underwater and hence incredibly murky, I thought that the rest of the film wasn’t going to look like that. Without doing too much in terms of his looks, he totally transforms into the characters he plays, thereby allowing us to believe in his motivations and emotions. When it comes to the performances, Sara Ali Khan is supposed to be the lynchpin of the film. But, credit where credit is due, this should’ve been a slam dunk because she gets to be front-and-center in a movie with Vikrant Massey and Chitrangada Singh. I think they try to show that the character’s “villainy” is the result of years of oppression and torture, but the writing is so bad that his actions feel heinous and not an act of rebellion. Well, I’m assuming they thought that the dark images would complement the “dark” tone of the story. Sharma and Kirpalani even try to talk about the infidelity of upper-caste men, but how they are the first to react violently when anyone else does the same things they do. It’s the movie that educated me about agoraphobia and showed us what the fear of stepping out of one’s house and being in the company of many people can feel like. She’s apparently the daughter of Ratan (Shishir Sharma) and Gayatri, who lost the ability to walk after an accident.

Gaslight is such a low-on-thrills psychological thriller that even the reliably good Vikrant Massey seems to be on auto-pilot.

In a party scene, Meesha sits with Kapil, the hired help, who gives her a lowdown on the guests and who may or may not be having affairs. I think it might be the scene in which a blind Rabadi woman with a severed chicken claw tied to her hand suddenly appears. At one point, she is even pushed down a flight of stairs. Gaslight uses done-to-death tropes to scare you or create a mystery around a murder, but nothing could hold you together. She, with the help of Kapil, tries to unearth the truth and reach the bottom of it. Even the horror is limited to jump-scares, dark lighting, shadowy entities, a lantern lying on the ground and pianos playing on their own. The film begins with a wheelchair-bound Meesha (Sara Ali Khan) returning to her royal haveli, after over a decade to meet her father His Majesty Ratan (Shataf Ahmed Figar). The overall premise of the film isn't that bad but the execution and the predictable first 15 minutes itself ruin the whole experience. And not to forget, you have to sit through 1.5 hours to actually reach that one high. If anything, it bores you, and makes you smirk at places where you feel the attempt was to scare you.
