What is the Impact Player Rule in IPL 2023? (The Sportsrush)

Not known for tinkering with the rules of the sport unnecessarily, Indian Premier League have made an exception by introducing the “Impact Player Rule” ...

The last new rule of IPL 2023 revolves around Unfair Movements by Fielders. [Slow Over Rates](https://thesportsrush.com/cricket-news-slow-over-rate-rule-in-ipl-what-is-the-time-limit-for-bowling-20-overs-in-an-ipl-2021-match/) seriously for a change, IPL will rightly punish faltering teams with a fielder less outside the 30-yard circle for every over not completed in the allocated time. With an innovative rule set to embark on its IPL journey, it will be interesting to see how IPL teams make use of it in this season. With a provision to call upon an Impact Player anytime during the course of a match, he will be able to perform multiple roles. In simple words, Impact Player Rule in IPL 2023 will be a modified version of “Super Sub Rule” which was implemented in ODIs around 2005. A major rule among all the new IPL 2023 rules, Impact Player Rule isn’t entirely unnecessary.

IPL Impact Player: Many possibilities and an Indian reality (Hindustan Times)

It would not be too cynical to suggest that the introduction of the Impact Player rule is a consequence of India's player pool. | Cricket.

It would not be too cynical to suggest that the introduction of this rule is a consequence of India’s player pool. Equally, one could argue that identifying a weakness in your player pool and making changes to your league which make it less likely you produce those players, is a misuse of the opportunity. The introduction of the IP rule makes this specific lack of talent less relevant, and less likely to damage the spectacle and quality of play. Of course, changes to the format of cricket are nothing new. Conversely, some teams might use the rule to get so-called “balancing” players out of the XI. The Impact Player must be Indian, so you are not allowed to swap one overseas player with another.
