Viduthalai Part 1 First Day First Impression: A Soulful Soori Turns ... (Film Companion)

10 key highlights from an early show of Vetri Maaran's hard hitting drama co-starring Vijay Sethupathi.

This feeling of true and unnerving discomfort is never quite delivered again by the film, which sprints through much of its screenplay. Ilaiyaraaja’s comforting music is an interesting choice that offsets the film’s grit and spirit. The film rushes through most of its scenes through fast cuts, never letting us breathe or internalise an atrocity, before which another one is thrown at us to chew on. Vijay Sethupathi makes a special appearance as Vaathiyar aka Perumal, the leader of the insurgent outfit, the history of which is conveyed through a taut animated sequence, diegetic radio sounds and political speeches. “Aren’t we here to serve and help the people,” he recurrently asks even when he is often reminded of his place (“Naamala varumai naala policekaaranga aanom: Poverty drove us to become cops,” an officer tells him). With Viduthalai Part 1, Vetri Maaran is back on familiar turf, placing a piercing human drama in the middle of a powerful struggle against systemic oppression.

The first part of the series is slated to release on March 31, and the film has received an A from the censor board. Vetri Maaran has made his dream project more focused, and it's going to be a raw film from a talented director. 'Viduthalai' is based on the novel 'Thunaivan', which was written by Jeya Mohan, and the film is about a young cop's sincerity. The main highlight of this film is Soori, as he has delivered a stellar performance as Kumaresan. He joins the E company as a jeep driver and his duty is to deliver food to all the police who are based in the checkposts in the forest. The beauty of the film lies in these layers and there are some scenes that flow so naturally that you realize its importance, like the actor on screen, much later. It is a completely different story in a different setting. Do the police catch Perumal and his men? A police camp, headed by Ragavendar (Chethan), has been established there in order to catch the key leaders of a terrorist outfit called Makkal Padai (People's Army) headed by someone named Vaathiar aka Perumal (Vijay Sethupathi).

must watch, there might be a slight documentary feel in some scenes, but in the end, if you are a cinema lover or a fan of Director Vetrimaaran's films you'll definitely fall in love with this film. It stays true to Vetri Maaran's style and artistry, making audiences eager for the sequel. While there are occasional technical flaws, they are forgivable given the film's scale and the terrain it was shot in. While there are instances of police brutality, Vetri Maaran's portrayal is neutral, showcasing both sides of the issue. Vetri Maaran, known for his compelling writing and staging, delivers another engrossing narrative with Viduthalai Part 1. Caught in the crossfire, Kumeresan has no choice but to pursue Vaathiyaar to save numerous lives.

Viduthalai Part 1 movie review: Vetrimaaran film is not for the faint ... (Hindustan Times)

Vetrimaaran's much-awaited movie Viduthalai Part 1 was released on Friday. It features Soori, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Vijay Sethupathi, Chetan and Bhavani ...

A filmmaker whose films (in the past) glorified cop killings now plays a cop in a film that exposes police brutality in the most hard-hitting fashion. Apart from throwing the spotlight on police brutality, the story also discusses the state of politics in Tamil Nadu in the 1990s. Cut to next shot, we see a bus being frisked at a check post and the police shoot down two men (for carrying weapons) in cold blood when they try to flee the scene. Viduthalai questions the ethics behind police brutality in the most uncomfortable, unflinching fashion. The film, which is definitely not for the faint-hearted, is an elaborate, detailed exploration of abuse of power and it dives deep into the psyche of a man, an honest police constable, who is torn between his job and seeking the truth. [Vijay Sethupathi](https://www.hindustantimes.com/topic/vijay-sethupathi/page-6)), the leader of the local separatist group called Makkal Padai (People’s Army).

Soori has completely justified Vetrimaaran's immense faith in him, not only with his dedication but his talent too. , Tamil Movie News - IndiaGlitz Tamil ...

The romance between Soori and Bhavani Sre is integral to the narration and serves as the anchor for the former to the lengths that he goes to capture Vaathiyaar. Similarly Thamizh who is the co-director of this film already dealt with the plight of the constable in 'Taanaakaran'. Vetrimaaran has once again impressed with his vision, authenticity, intensity, balanced politics and the handwork in the making. The couple of romance songs only elongate the length of the film. At the same time his lens also get close enough to register the inner turmoil of the protagonist through his eyes. It is all Makkal Selvan in the few glimpses we get of 'Viduthalai 2' at the end and the crowd cant stop cheering for this rare actor who is a true boon to filmmakers of substance like no other. Chethan as the sadistic cop and the rest of the cast have performed neatly. What works best in 'Viduthalai 1' is the intensity and detailing that goes into every scene. Right from his loving voiceover explaining the happenings to his mother through letters to falling in love with Bhavani Sre to suffering humiliation at the hands of the cops he moves the audience with his emoting. 'Viduthalai' set in 1987 begins with Kumaresan (Soori) a fresh recruit police constable arriving at his base camp which is situated in a dangerous forest area. Vetrimaaran is one of the few filmmakers from the South who has maintained his cent percent hit rate critically as well as commercially for more than a decade and a half. Whether this intense socio political action thriller satisfy his fans only or cause his intended debate in the society remains to be seen.

The post-credit scenes show a sequel is on the way. Performance-wise, Soori has given his heart and soul to the film. It is amazing how Vetrimaaran sets the scene, which drives the audience to the edge when Soori reaches a point where he is forced to confess this secret to his superiors. Vijay Sethupathi only comes for 15 minutes, but his presence is felt throughout the film. He knows when the characters have to act subtly and when the protagonist should be glorified. Kumaresan is often unhappy with the brutality exhibited by cops.

Everyone is a cog in the wheel of this giant institution that spins only to wield power. He is also adamant when it comes to what is right and wrong. Viduthalai is set in the 80s in a fictional village on a forested hill. A poster on the bridge claims that it was done by Makkal Padai (People’s Army), a militant outfit that is headed by a faceless man named Perumal aka Vaathiyaar (teacher). All this gore is to evoke a sense of anger towards the perpetrators, who bombed the bridge killing these innocent people. Then again, in an industry where violence has become synonymous with heroism, Vetri is one of the few filmmakers who depict violence as it should be.

Viduthalai Part 1 Review: Soori delivers his career-best performance ... (OTTplay)

Director Vetri Maaran's latest outing which revolves around police brutality, may not be as raw as Visaaranai, but is definitely a disturbing watch.

Throughout the film, Kumaresan has to bear the brunt of one of his actions as he did not cower in front of Raghavendar, thus giving a peek of how a police constable like Kumaresan is treated by the authorities. Some of the scenes can seem like sheer torture to watch, but it looks like the director wanted to depict the violence as it is. The film's cinematography deserves a special mention as Velraj seems to be in his element. However, there is a huge roadblock to the project, courtesy the Makkal Padai, who believe that development comes at the cost of depletion of natural resources and destruction of the ecosystem. The politicians have tied up with a mega corporation, which is all set to invest in infrastructure in the hilly terrain and in this case, mining. Viduthalai is set in 1987 when the Makkal Padai ( a separatist group) insurgency is at its peak in a hilly terrain of Tamil Nadu.

'Viduthalai Part 1' movie review: Soori shines in Vetri Maaran's most ... (The Hindu)

Soori, in the role of his lifetime, brims with energy and innocence as Kumaresan, as director Vetri Maaran's socio-political commentary gets more vigorous ...

The film sports a brilliant list of talent both behind and in front of the camera. So much is packed into it that we rarely get to linger and feel for the atrocities the villagers are subjected to. It instead concentrates on the conflict between the troops and the group, as well as the trials and tribulations of Kumaresan who has to make the difficult trade of his innocence and morals for recognition in his job and the love he has found in Tamizharasi (Bhavani Sre). Bhavani Sre, who we earlier saw in Paava Kadhaigal in which Vetri had also directed a short, is neat as the strong-headed Tamizharasi. The cops in Vetri Maaran’s films are usually filled with subservient people hardened by years of conditioning to follow orders or treacherous power-wielders who can misuse them for malicious purposes. A look at director Vetri Maaran’s filmography shows us a common trope in all the films he has directed; they’re stories of ordinary men, underdogs who are trying to make a living for themselves, only to be unwittingly pulled into a world of chaos that they have to escape unscathed.

The sidelining that’s there within the system and the way the police treat the villagers are shown in the signature Vetri Maaran way with bloodshed. Compared to the other films Vetri Maaran has made, Viduthalai Part 1 is not necessarily the most hard-hitting film. The placement of the power arch in order to showcase the politics is done neatly. But like I said, a good chunk of the core is happening in the future segment, and hence you are kind of leaving the theater when you were about to feel for those characters. The police had the task of destroying this force led by a man named Perumal, aka Vaathiyar, as the government wanted to give the state an industry-friendly tag. On a combined watch, there is a possibility that Viduthalai could well be as impressive as a Visaranai.

Viduthalai Part 1 Review: Reasonably Low-Impact For Vetri Maaran ... (Film Companion)

Viduthalai remains the rare instance in a Vetri Maaran movie where you do not have to take a disciplined, conscious effort to wash away the chilling ...

At the outset, apart from Kumaresan’s voiceovers to his mother and the relationship with Tamilarasi, we’re often kept at a distance with the other major events within the film. This also gives the invisible relationship between Perumal and Murugesan a layer of mutual respect for each other, even if they’ve been destined to be enemies. This is an aspect to Kumaresan that allows us to draw parallels between him and Perumal (Vijay Sethupathi), the leader of the Makkal Padai who is also very much the enemy of the State. But it takes until the final shoot-out for one to understand how Kumaresan has remained at a metaphorical vantage point throughout, in clear view of not just what’s in front, but also what’s hidden. The theme of a vantage point recurs not just in the form of visuals, with drone shots showing us how tiny these people appear in the endless forests but Kumaresan too finds himself being asked to man the watch tower. It takes a whole 10 minutes for the camera to zoom back to learn the magnitude with the safe distance of watching another terrorist attack on another front page.
