I had a few but didn’t lose my balance.” The recent financial grants from the BCCI to former cricketers had been a help, and also the pension he got from the board. Play straight!” I told him, “Giffy, never mind if it was a cross-batted shot, we now just need 20 runs, go get the ball!” Though he eventually fell for 38, India went on to seal the game. I haven’t seen him in a while; he used to come often to India before but no longer.” In the evenings, if his cousin or grandson Yasin weren’t free, he would take an auto and go to Summair Club. Sometimes I would hear the crowd chant and get into the mood,” he laughs. He was at the home of his niece where he has been for the last year due to health concerns. And told them “gaadi ghumao” and actually went in search of the lady to get the sweater back! It is learnt Durani was not in the best of health after he broke his thigh bone in a fall in January this year. The “dashing” Parveen Babi would soon become his heroine in a movie, and later become a good friend. He was a flamboyant all-rounder known for hitting sixes on demand, a temperamental spinner who on his day could remove the best batsman — the story of him demanding Ajit Wadekar to give him the ball and proceeding to knock out Garry Sobers is often spoken about. Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, he lived all his life in Jamnagar, a city that has a statue of India’s great Vinoo Mankad at a busy traffic junction and was, back in the day, ruled by a cricketing legend Ranjitsinhji.

Born in Kabul in Afghanistan in 1934, the flamboyant all-rounder played 29 Tests for India in a career spanning from 1960 to 1973. | Cricket.

He was also honoured by the Indian cricket board with the CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award at a BCCI award function in Mumbai in May 2011. “I went to West Indies twice with the Indian team, I wish I was taken to England (also). He was handsome enough to play the hero in a Bollywood movie, pairing with Parveen Babi in BR Ishara’s Charitra. A large-hearted, soft-spoken man, he remained a popular figure all across India with a vast circle of friends in all cities. Yet, in terms of name and fame, he was arguably second to none. In one of the parties after that, Sir Frank Worrell said: ‘If you give me a choice to choose my team, I will have Durani at No 3 in my batting order.’ He was such a great player. Such was his charisma and friendly nature that he was never short of well-wishers wherever he went. Having batted at No 9 in India's first innings of the fourth Test in Trinidad in 1962, he was promoted to No 3 for their second innings and scored 104. He was a mainstay for Rajasthan in the 1960s, a decade when they were the perennial bridesmaids to Bombay in Ranji Trophy. But he was at home in any city in India. In the space of a few balls in the fourth innings, Durani dismissed Clive Lloyd and Garry Sobers for India’s first Test victory in the Caribbean. In first-class cricket, playing for Saurashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan, his numbers (8,545 runs at 33, 484 wickets at 26 in a span of 23 years from 1953-54 to 1977-78) were reasonably better.

Salim Durani obituary: The unassuming Prince of cricket passes away (Sportstar)

Salim bhai, who once attracted a large number of women to Test cricket with his dashing look and game, died unsung in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

Salim bhai was a charmer. Salim bhai was a dada.” That was the genius called Salim Durani, who famously removed Garry Sobers and Clive Lloyd in 1971 at Port of Spain to set up a historic win. Salim bhai was the password. “ Ek over daaloonga bus (will bowl just one over).” I stood at a short distance from the stumps. He had all the time in the world to play the ball and an amazing range of shots, going down on his knee to smack even the medium-pacers on matting pitches.” The next day, he triggered a batting collapse with his left-arm spin and then went on to chase the target with plenty to spare. 9 in the first innings and justified the promotion to No. Salim bhai, who once attracted a large number of women to Test cricket with his dashing look and game, died unsung in Jamnagar, Gujarat. It was so hard to accept,” said Ghavri about his recent meetings with Salim bhai, who batted and bowled left-handed. His Ranji Trophy debut for Saurashtra against Gujarat in 1953 was marked by a dazzling 108. Durani, the man, who ruled Indian cricket in the 1960s, suffered during his final days, physically and mentally, confined to the bed in his two-room rented apartment, unable to walk without support.

His co-star in the B.R. In that series he made his name as a man who could hit sixes on demand. I document Pataudi’s frustrations at Durani’s lack of discipline in my book Not Just Cricket: A Reporter’s Journey Through Modern India, where I quote Pataudi saying that it was not easy to handle Durani. The two deliveries which he produced to scalp Clive Lloyd and Gary Sobers in quick succession laid the foundations of the historic Indian win, its first ever in the West Indies. Be it his match-winning ten and eight wicket hauls against England at Kolkata and Chennai in the 1961-62 series, or his magical spell against the West Indies in the Port of Spain Test of 1972. Tall, handsome, debonair, flamboyant and many such epithets that convey the star value of a man were freely attributed to him.

But when he landed in Mumbai, he did not have money to pay customs duties because he had spent the money. Even when the team won back-to-back Ranji Trophy titles in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, Durani visited the Sawai Mansingh Stadium to watch Rajasthan’s matches. “Finally, just an hour before the match started at the Railway Cricket Ground in Jaipur, we got him new cricket clothes and Salim bhai took the field, donning new garments,” Rungta recollects. And, throughout his career, Durani had a similar approach - he would not spare the bowlers. So, I stepped in and gave a 10 rupee note to the coolie,” Rungta says. And, to our surprise, he quietly went into his room and burnt his cricket apparel in frustration,” Rungta says. He won several matches single-handedly and it was a treat watching him bat,” he says. So, whenever the team would play in Rajasthan, Salim bhai and the other players would stay at our home and the bond grew stronger over the years. He had given him a one rupee note, but the coolie wanted more. While he achieved incredible success during that period and guided the team to five Ranji Trophy finals, Durani developed a strong bond with the Rungta family. Mr Sunderam dropped him at the airport, but later we discovered that Salim bhai had reached Udaipur instead of Jaipur,” Rungta reminisces. As the news of Durani’s demise came in on Sunday early morning, it was an emotional roller-coaster for the entire Rungta family.

Salim Durani, the Afghanistan-born Indian legend who hit sixes at will (ThePrint)

When India was in a tough spot playing against West Indies in 1971, Durani promised to take the wickets of Clive Lloyd and Gary Sobers.

I was not surprised that Shekhar wanted to reach out to him — Shekhar and the cricket-loving people of his generation knew the genius he was. He had Lloyd caught by none other than Wadekar himself for 15 and he needed no one to claim the most crucial wicket of Gary Sobers. And Salim did not let his fans down, scoring a brilliant 70-odd in that match. India desperately needed to bundle the West Indies in the second innings to get a firm grip on the match. His exploits with the ball are part of cricketing folklore. During the England tour of India in 1961, Salim hit a breathtaking 71, with two sixes and 10 fours against a strong English bowling side comprising David Allen, Tony Lock, David Smith and Alan Brown. It was typical of Salim Durrani not to take batting too seriously. The Maharaja of Jamnagar had arranged for his ancestors to come to India from Afghanistan. Sunil was absolutely sure that he had not carried a blanket with him during the train journey. The ground is next to the family’s private airstrip and is rather picturesque. When he woke up in the morning, he was astonished to see that he had been covered by a blanket. Almost always, they took the train to travel the country to play domestic and international matches.

But, you suspect, he was quite happy to have been a man of another era, a more forgiving, more genuine one. Durani had Clive Lloyd and Sobers in space of a few balls, setting up a sevenwicket win in Port of Spain. The other famous bit about Durani is a contentious one. Although he hit a long ball, Durani never claimed to be a power hitter.
