Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu is making a fervent plea to China to increase tourist flow to his country. This appeal comes in the midst of cancellations by Indian tourists following a diplomatic row. Muizzu urged Xi Jinping to intensify efforts in sending more tourists to boost the Maldives' tourism sector. In a strategic move, Maldives and China have signed a $50 million project to develop an integrated tourism zone in the country. The plea for more Chinese tourists follows a backlash from Indian tourists after derogatory remarks by some Maldivian ministers about Prime Minister Modi.

President Muizzu's administration had initially proposed a visit to India in November, further escalating tensions between the two countries. However, the focus has now shifted to strengthening ties with China, with Muizzu actively seeking Chinese support during his visit. India's boycott over offensive comments has led to a significant drop in reservations from Indian tourists, urging the President to turn towards China. Before the pandemic, China was the top tourism market for the Maldives, with over 2.80 lakh tourists.

It is noteworthy that President Muizzu had sent a proposal for a December 2023 visit to India after visits to China, Turkey, and the UAE. This move indicates a shift in diplomatic strategies amidst the ongoing tensions with India. Moreover, with India remaining the top tourism market for the Maldives in 2022, the President's call for increased Chinese tourism highlights a crucial shift in the country's tourism focus.
