Delhi's AQI hits 487, making it feel like you're smoking 49 cigarettes a day! Here's the chaos of the capital's pollution crisis!
The air in Delhi is currently so toxic that its Air Quality Index (AQI) has skyrocketed to a staggering 487, making it one of the worst pollution episodes the city has ever faced. This level of PM2.5 pollution, which measures the fine particulate matter in the air, is an astonishing 20 times higher than what the World Health Organization (WHO) deems acceptable. To put this into perspective, breathing this air is like smoking approximately 49 cigarettes a day! Not much of a stress reliever, right?
Haryana isn't trailing too far behind. With an AQI of 631, residents there are inhaling air equivalent to about 33.25 cigarettes daily. In a frenetic effort to combat this silent killer, the local BJP party has taken to the streets, distributing masks outside metro stations, as if handing out party favors at a belated Halloween gathering. It seems like a grim masquerade on the streets of Delhi as citizens navigate life under a pollution cloud that feels almost apocalyptic!
The situation has grown so dire that visibility was severely impacted, with residents waking up to a thick blanket of smog that resembled scenes from a dystopian movie. As the Supreme Court steps in with orders to enforce GRAP IV (Graded Response Action Plan), discussions around air quality are heating up faster than an Indian summer. Plans are being put in place to mitigate the adverse atmospheric conditions that have made even the sharpest eyes squint in disbelief.
Amidst all this chaos are noticeable comments from prominent figures like Robert Vadra, who have voiced their concerns over the political handling of pollution. Can pollution tell the difference between political parties and individual beliefs? No! It’s a reminder that the air we breathe is a shared resource for all, regardless of which side of the fence you sit on.
Did you know that air pollution can lead to long-term respiratory issues that may affect your quality of life? It’s estimated that approximately 1.2 million deaths in India can be attributed to air pollution each year! As alarming as it is, the air quality situation in Delhi pushes communities and authorities to come together for a common cause.
And here’s something to chew on – the top individual contributing to air pollution isn’t always vehicles or industrial emissions but often, the simple activities we indulge in at home! Burning incense, cooking with gas, and even gardening can release harmful particulates into the atmosphere. Let’s breathe easier for a change and work towards solutions, not just masks!
The average PM2.5 level was 354 micrograms per cubic metre, which is over 20 times the standard set by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Haryana followed Delhi closely as with an AQI of 631, the neighbour state is experiencing air pollution level equal to smoking 33.25 cigarettes each day.
